I am really good at piddling. The greatest joy and honor of my career has been serving as rector of Trinity Church, New Orleans. I have had great colleagues and fellow workers in this crazy, wonderful, wounded and healing, courageous, compassionate, funny, and fun-loving, growing and daring part of the kingdom. I have seen God in you, in your work, and most of all in your love. To serve and enjoy this church and school, and our larger community, is the highest honor. I am grateful to you all. Now I begin again, and hope to be a blessing as God guides and teaches me. And now I have just the pocket knife to carry with me.

Trinity’s Mission: Acting in God’s love, Trinity Episcopal Church welcomes everyone to enthusiastically live the Christian faith. We call our members to worship and prayer, lifelong education, spiritual growth,

cheerful giving, and active ministry with our community. All members serve as witnesses to Jesus Christ.

As were walking into St. Andrew’s Church on Carrollton Avenue on the day of my wedding (forty years ago), Daddy said to me, “Do you have a knife?” I replied that I did indeed. He asked “On you?” I said “Of course not! I’m in a tuxedo about to get married!” He took the pocket knife out of his pocket, gave it to me and said, “A man can’t get married without a pocket knife.” The meaning of this is still a mystery to me, but it was a gift apparently I needed. As I walked around the Trinity campus today I met Albinas headed to his office. After a few minutes of conversation, he reached in his pocket and gave me a gift: an “Uncle Henry” pocket knife for my retirement! Albinas is always a mystery to me, a very talented mystery, but still a mystery. This time I almost cried, for once again as a new era in my life begins, I am equipped by a lovely man who cares for me. I was stunned and deeply grateful. After nearly forty years of ordained ministry and thirty-six as rector of four parishes, I am retiring. I can’t, and won’t, stop being a priest, but I am ready for this new stage in my ministry. Christian Formationby The Rev. Kit McLean, Associate Rector

Adult Formation

Feasting is always a feature of life in New Orleans, but in April and May festivals particularly abound. For the Church, our primary season of feasting begins Easter Sunday and is the high point of the Church year. As Easter people, resurrection is at the heart of our faith. We believe that because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. Our lives are preparation for an eternal feast in union and full communion with God and all creation.

Easter is not celebrated for just one day but lasts for “The Great Fifty Days” until Pentecost, which means fifty and which is the day on which we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. This year Pentecost is Sunday, May 15. Plan on attending a worship service sporting a touch of red in thanksgiving for the work of the Spirit within and among us. On the fortieth of these fifty days, Wednesday, May 5, we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, commemorating when Jesus moved from our earthly realm to join (or re-join) the heavenly banquet.

As we see signs of new life—of resurrection—all around us in the natural world, we can experience new life and renewal in our spiritual lives as well. Getting involved in some aspect of ministry and making worship a priority are both ways to “fertilize” our souls. Opportunities to worship, to serve, to create and renew, are plentiful at Trinity. Please prayerfully consider how you might be called to participate more fully in our wonderful and inspirited common life!

A double reason for celebration and feasting occurs on Sunday, May 8, which is both Confirmation Sunday and Mother’s Day. Come support and celebrate those who are being confirmed or received and at the same time celebrate all of the women in our lives who nurture and support us.

As we prepare for the arrival of our Interim Rector in June, help us to be more hospitable! Consider serving as part of our hospitality team of greeters, ushers and coffee hour hosts or as part of our altar party as an acolyte, lector or chalice bearer. Please contact Rev. Kit McLean at [email protected], Mary Sutton at [email protected] or Ashley Bond at [email protected] for more information. No previous experience needed.

Faith, Fellowship and Fun on Wednesday nights from 5:30-7:30 pm concludes on May 4. The Rev. Henry Hudson will close out our series on “Hearing God’s Call(s)” in our lives by sharing parts of his own spiritual journey.

On Sunday mornings at 9:15 am, John Zeller is leading a Bible study on Paul’s Letter to the Romans in the Moore Library.

Teen Drug Prevention (May 11)With graduation, summer vacations, and the transition to

high school or college fast approaching, our kids face many new experiences. These will likely include different social expectations, pressure from peers and offers to do drugs and alcohol. A recent national study shows that 47% of middle and high school students report having used illicit drugs and we must tackle this “public health epidemic” head on (The New York Times, 1/16). On Wednesday, May 11 from 6:30-8pm in Bishop Polk Hall, we will co-host a panel discussion with representatives from The PACT, a new web-based, teen drug prevention program that addresses teen drug use, abuse, addiction, risk factors and measures toward prevention. Guest speakers include local psychiatrist, addiction expert and member of Tulane University’s School of Medicine, Arwen Podesta, MD, a young man (24yo) from New Orleans who graduated from local private middle and high schools and whose life has been a roller coaster of drugs, death, despair and recovery (3 years clean), and Father Henry who will address how this epidemic has directly impacted our own faith community. Both parents and youth are encouraged to attend together so that we can begin to have open conversations about the realities and dangers facing our youth and work together as a community to protect our youth and our families from avoidable suffering and tragedy. For information about The PACT visit http://bit.ly/ThePACT.,

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 25-29 for children ages 4-12yrs. Register today at http://bit.ly/VBSReg2016. We are also in need of adult volunteers and student leaders. Please email Ashley if you are available to help!

EucharistThe cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. -1 Corinthians 10:16-17

We gather together at the altar to share the body and blood of Christ, but sometimes there are situations that prevent us from being present. Did you know that communion can be brought to you from the altar of one of our services? Trinity is pleased to offer Communion both in your home or in the hospital. Our trained Eucharistic visitors go out as representatives of our church family to share communion from our table with you. When you register at the hospital, remember to list your religious preference as Episcopal. Should you be in the hospital on a Sunday, communion can be brought to you. If you are there on other days, please let the church office know so someone may visit you. And always, please let the church office know should you be going through any sort of health or other challenge. We want to support you and add you to our daily prayers. For more information on any of these services, or to become a Eucharistic visitor, please contact Deacon Alyce at [email protected].

Or you may make a monetary donation simply referencing the Military Ministry. A box has been set up in the Undercroft clearly marked for drop-offs or contact Peyton Greene, 504-915-9592.

Enneagram Intro with Sandra SmithTrinity will be hosting an Enneagram Workshop on Saturday, May 14. I first encountered the Enneagram as a tool for developing my own direction in life, work and spiritual direction. I believe developing self-awareness helps us become more compassionate with ourselves, our families and those with whom we work. Besides the fact that this work is enlighten-ing in so many ways, we also have lot of fun. One friend told me that after 35 years of marriage, she finally understands where her husband is coming from after participating in an Enneagram workshop. Below you will see quotes from others who have worked with Sandra Smith in the past to explore this ancient and amazing spiritual tool.

I could almost see the tension in the room slip away after one of Sandra’s exercises. –Virginia Weinmann Learning about the Enneagram has been of great help to me in my spiritual life. Not only has it enhanced my self-awareness, it also has inspired a deeper understanding of, and compassion for, those who view the world through a lens of personality much different from my own. –Jerry Meunier One day is not enough! I wanted to see and hear from more panels. –Sally O’Meallie

The Enneagram is a map useful in staff communi-cation and managerial styles for businesses, non-profit, organizations, and faith communities as well as for deepening your personal prayer life. Please join us Saturday, May 14, 8:30-5:00 in Bishop Polk Hall. Cost $80 before May 1 and $100 after May 1. For more information or to register on-line visit https://trinitynola.com/ennea-gram-workshop or contact Maria Elliott 670-2535.

Trinity Out and About will be visiting Kingsley House on Monday, May 16 at 10:30 am for a tour and lunch. Kingsley House, the first Settlement House in the South, opened at 929 Tchoupitoulas Street in 1896 as a part of the parish work of Trinity Episcopal Church under the guidance of Dr. Beverley Warner, Rector. Come and see this amazing facility and hear about the ways in which this institution has grown to serve our community since then. Please reserve your space by May 10 by calling Maria at 670-2535 or [email protected]. The tour is free and you may make a $10 contribution for lunch if you are able. We will carpool from Trinity at 10:15.
