Principal’s Report

NAPLAN

The supervising staff at THPS has been very impressed by the ‘no fuss’ approach our students have shown towards the NAPLAN tests last week. With all the negative publicity in some media outlets about kids getting stressed, it is nice to know that our students understand that this is an assessment like any other they might do at any other time throughout the year and should be treated accordingly. The data gathered from these assess-ments can provide valuable information to assist teaching pro-grams.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2015

To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff the school appropriately for 2015, I need all parents enrolling chil-dren K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2015, we can then contact them and in-clude them on our numbers for next year.

Reports

Semester 1 reports will be sent home in week 9. These compre-hensive reports reflect all the work that the children have achieved in term I and 2 based on regular assessment tasks and indicate the outcomes achieved and goals set for term 3 and 4. Please don’t hesitate to organise an interview with your child’s class teacher to clarify any questions that you may have in re-gards to your child’s learning and progress.

Student information update

Please make sure that if any information in regards to your child’s living arrangements, phone numbers, emergency con-tacts, medical records, etc has changed in the last 12 months will need to be noted to the new Family Information sheet included in an earlier newsletter. Please return these forms ASAP to Mrs. Carlier in the office so that we can update our records. Current information allows us to contact family members and support ill children quickly.

PEANUTS/ Anaphylactic reaction reminder

The number of children at Tighes Hill PS with allergies to differ-ent food products and substances is growing. At this school we have students with severe (life threatening) reactions to peanuts and all tree nuts enrolled. To maximize the wellbeing and safety for all students, parents are asked not to pack peanut butter sandwiches or nut products for your children and to make sure that you are vigilant in reading labels of all pre-packaged foods. Please let’s work together to provide a safe environment for all students.

School Contributions

School fees for 2014 are still only $30 per child and can be paid at any time or in installments throughout the year. School fees contribute towards the purchase of resources/materials that are used for class work each day. Notes have been sent home this week to those students who have not paid $45 for book packs.

Reforms to P&C Federation

The NSW Parliament has introduced legislation to reform

the NSW Federation of Parent and Citizens Associations,

which has suspended operation pending Supreme Court

action. While these reforms will not affect the day-to-day

operation of individual school P&Cs, they will introduce a

new executive structure which will ensure the Federation

operates as a modern and representative body on behalf

of school P&C Associations.

Each school’s P&C Association will be asked to vote for

councillors and delegates who will represent their elec-

torate at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting and

councillors who will serve on the Federation’s Board of

Management. More information will be available on the

Department’s website at

http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/a-z/

involvement.php.

Interschool Chess Challenge

Congratulations to our students from the OC who represented our school in the Interschool Chess Challenge last Friday organ-ised by the Sydney Academy of Chess.

It was a huge day of mental tactics, strategy and intense concentration! Many schools from across the region were represented including Plattsburg, St Phillips College, Valentine and HSPA.

The competition was extremely close throughout the day and our students showed great sportsmanship and encouragement of each other. Overall, our team finished 2nd place, just half a point behind Plattsburg, who were the day’s winners. Congratulations also to Dan, who placed 2nd in the individual scores. Our school has made it through to the semi-finals which will be held next term.

A big thank you also to our wonderful parents who helped make this event possible by providing transport to and from the venue.

Expressions of Interest for

Piano lessons.

My name is Jodie Kell. I am a secondary teacher who has 20 years of experience in teaching music both at high school and primary school level. I have taught in schools and private lessons, currently teaching piano, singing and trumpet. I have a graduate Diploma in Music spe-cialising in Audio Engineering. I am a working musician and I perform in bands around Newcastle and beyond.

I will be offering individual piano lessons at Tighes Hill School on Wednesdays this year. This will save parents taking their children to music lessons after school when everyone’s lives are so busy. The cost is $30 per half hour lesson that will need to be paid upfront at the beginning of each term. The students will come out of class and attend lessons at the school.

I believe in the value of music for young people. Firstly I hope the students will enjoy music and learn to play music they love. They will learn about the im-portance of practise and develop confi-dence to perform and share music with others.

There are limited places so please let the school know if you are interested.
