Principal’s Report

Well done to all the children who last Friday completed their 2 week swim school. Although there were a few days which were a little cool, they were lucky enough to have some warmth last week! All the children began to make real progress in the pool by Friday so it’s now very important to make sure that they get to practice these skills. Taking your children to the pool regularly is also a great way to show Mayfield pool your support. A huge thank you to all school staff and parents who assisted each day - walking to and from the pool.

What a wonderful Kindergarten Orientation day we had, so many families and children attended. Thank you to all the parents who pro-vided such positive feedback and enjoyed the rotation of the infor-mation sessions, which I know provided a greater opportunity for parents to ask questions and be involved in all sessions. A great morning tea by Mrs Crump completed the day. Thank you to Mrs Crump and Mrs Dickson for their wonderful organisation. Thanks also to Mrs Dickson, Mrs Behsman, Miss Robinson, Ms Brown, Mr Britt and all staff involved for making the orientation very smooth.

As we are heading towards the final weeks of term, this is a very busy period so please make sure that you read all newsletters and notes so that you or the children don’t miss out on any activities planned.

Selective High School Test 2016

All current year 5 children who wish to sit for the selective HS exam early next year (12/3/2015) will need to complete online application by the 17th of November. Hard copies are available from school if you do not have access to internet. Please make sure you meet the deadlines as it is difficult to apply after the due dates. Practice test questions are available through the selective schools web site and I encourage children wishing to sit the test to access these. Parents must apply online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement

Captains 2015

Year 5 children will begin participating in a leadership program in preparation for the upcoming 2015 Captains and Vice-Captain Elec-tions. During the leadership program Year 5 children will be able to nominate/ be nominated for the first round candidates. They will then as a group, vote for the final 6 students. These 6 children can then begin to campaign and prepare their speeches that will be delivered before parents and the whole school on Wednesday 26/11/2014. K to Y5 will then vote for the boy and girl Captain while the other 4 children will become Vice- Captains. This process ena-bles all Y5 children to identify leadership skills and attributes, that they each possess and gives them confidence and ownership of the process of electing captains.

Outstanding Excursion Payments, School Fees

As we are entering the final few weeks of the 2014 school year, I urge all parents to finalise outstanding payments for excursions, photographs, book packs and school fees. Each year, as a school we end up carrying bad debts and then we have difficulty trying to retrieve late payments. At present, the school has covered these costs from our global budget which is affecting our ability to organise other activities. We urgently need to be reimbursed for this amount. Our budget is designed to be shared equally throughout the entire school population. Could you please ensure all outstanding pay-ments are made to the office or via our online payment service.

Enrolments 2015

To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff the school appropriately for 2015, I need all parents enrolling children K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office ASAP. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2015. We can then contact them and include them on our num-bers for next year. Thank you to all the parents who are promoting our school in such a positive way and encouraging all local families to enrol in their local school.

Super Mathematicians!

Well done to all of our Year 5 and 6 students who

participated in the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics

competition last term. Students received their terrific

results at last week’s assembly. Congratulations to

Lachlan, Dan and Eva who placed in the top 100 of

their grade and received a High Distinction. Lachlan

was also recognised for his outstanding achievement at

a special award ceremony last week, as he placed 5th

overall and was awarded a district prize as the top

achiever in the Newcastle district.

Students who placed in the top 15% of participants were awarded a Distinction. Congratulations to Zane,

Jack, Joe E, Joseph T, Sarah, Heidi, Adrian, Lucas, Sydney, Noah and Dayna.

Students who placed in the top 30% of participants were awarded a certificate of Merit. Well done to Max,

Cala, Rafe, Jasper, Declan, Demaris and Rory. A fantastic achievement for Tighes Hill!

CEP Outdoor Digital Media Festival

A huge thank you to the wonderful Tighes Hill commu-

nity who came along last Thursday night and supported

us at this combined schools event. Our choir, thanks to

the great work of Miss Beker and Mrs Behsman, did a

fabulous job performing as part of the pre-show enter-

tainment. Thank you to Miss Staniland and the families

who baked delicious cakes for our fundraising tent. Our

short film, made by our clever OC students, starring

Dan, Louis, Liam and Adrian with special guest appear-

ance by the one and only Mr Junon was a huge hit -

we’ve even had requests to make a sequel! If you

haven’t seen it yet, visit the Tiger Tales blog.

Help us win $10,000 for our school!

Well done to Louis and Nelson from the OC, whose film script for

the Water Catchers competition was selected as one of the best

nine to be made into a film. Earlier this term Max, Lachlan and

Dan worked with a professional film crew to shoot the Drop of

Destiny. All the films in this competition can now be viewed and

voted for via http://www.thewatercatchers.com.au/ using an email

address. Voting closes

on the 21st November so

make sure you get your

friends, family and neigh-

bours to vote for our

school. Fingers crossed,

we could be $10,000

richer!

Poor Mrs Bowman got so excited at the

Halloween Fete, she lost her head!

Thanks to everyone who attended the CEP

Outdoor Media Festival and our fantastic choir

who performed beautifully!

Congratulations to Lachlan and Dan from the

OC for their amazing achievement in this year’s

Maths Olympiad. Top 10% of 30,000

participants and highest individual scorers in

our team. Well done also to Dayna, Eva and

Max for placing in the top 25%. Great work!

Thanks to the students from the University of

Newcastle for delivering their Robogals

program to our Stage 3 girls last week.
