GIFAtec 1100 / GIFAtec 1500Production and environmental features

GIFAtec is produced by natural gypsum and aportionFGD-gypsumbyadmixturingofcellulosefibresmadeof sorted recycledpaperandcard-board.Thenaturalgypsumisexploitedinopen-castminingsinanareac.30kmaroundthefac-tory. The natural-chemical identical clean FGDgypsum is calcined with the natural gypsum tostucco.Thepapersaresoakedinbigtanks.Afterprocessing time theyaremixedwithprocessing

water and the stucco to amush. Thismush isput ona transport belt, reachinga thicknessofc.2mmbypullingofthesurpluswaterbyvacu-uming.On the formingcylinder it iswoundedup to theneededthickness,roughlycutandafterasettingperioddriedina12-layerdryer.TheGIFAtec large-sized panels are been sanded.They could been cut / shaped on demand in a

formatstationtobecomeGIFAfloorpanelsor incaseofbigorderstoGIFAtecspecialdimensionedpanels.Afterprimingthetopandbacksideofthepanels theyarepackedonpallets.This kindofproductionofgypsumfibrematerialensurestheuniquehomogeneousdensitythroughthewholethicknessoftheGIFAtecmaterial.

Independencyon theirdensityanddimen-sionsGIFAtec panels could be bent in thepanelslevel.Partswithabigthicknessandsmallbendingradiuscouldbemadebyglue-ing several layers of thin GIFAtec panels

gluedholohedralafterbeeingbent.Anotherpossibility to produce curved surfaces is tofix the GIFAtec panels on precut GIFAtecframes.

The load bearing capacity of the GIFAtecframes is tested with statical and dynamictest procedures and proved according toprEN13964andDIN18168-2.

1. Glazing

Theglazeisproducedinallthecustomarywaysusedinthefieldofwoodrefining.Indoingso,aftertheelementformattingthesurfacesoftheKnaufIntegralGIFAtecgypsumfibrematerialareinjectedwithaspecialcolouredprimer.Thenaturalmarlingofthematerialischarac-terisedbythedifferingsuctionpropertiesoftheplastermaterialcom-ponents.Inafinalprocess,theglazedsurfaceisgivenacoatofclearvarnishasatransparentprotectivecoating.

2. Varnishing

ThevarnishingoftheKnaufIntegralGIFAtecgypsumfibreelementsalwaystakesplaceasatleastthethirdprocessaftertheprimingandthesurfacesanding.Dependingon thenatureof thevarnishbeingusedanditscoveringproperties,severalapplicationsaregiven(un-der some circumstances alwayswith an interim sanding).Whetherthevarnish isappliedbeforeorafteranysurfacestructurechangese.g.slits,holesorsandblasting,dependsonthedesired lookof theelementsintheproperty.Thestandardvarnishingmethodis“airless“spraying,whichenablesaperfect,texture-freesurface.Multi-layeref-fectvarnishescanalsobecreatedusingthisapplicationprocedure.

3. Veneering

TheKnauf IntegralGIFAtec plaster fibrematerial can be veneeredusingallknownrealwoodveneers.Theapplicationissimilartothatoftimberboards,butisonlypossibleusingthespecialadhesivewiththe respective veneer press setting for ourmaterials.With that, atthecustomer’srequestelementsofbuildingmaterialsclassA2(non-combustible) including veneer can also bemanufactured.The typeofwoodusedintheveneeredKnaufIntegralplastermaterialdoesn’tmakeanydifference to theclassification.Thefinal treatmentof theveneeredsurfacecanbeadministeredasnormal.Formating,slitsandholesareusuallycreatedaftertheveneerhasbeenappliedandthesurfacetreated.

6. Dyeing

Withthisprocedurethegypsumfibreblendismixedinwiththecol-ourpigment,whichinturncoloursthematerial.However,thismethodcanonlyberealisedwithaminimumorderquantityofaround2000m2.Thecharacteristicsofthemarlingcreatedbythecomponentsoftheplastermaterialremainevidentwiththiskindofprocessing.Aho-mogenous richcolouration throughoutcannotbeobtained from thisprocess.Dependingonthenatureandquantityofthecolourpigment,theKnaufIntegralgypsumfibrematerialcanremainclassifiedinthebuildingmaterialsclassA1(non-combustible).

4. Laminating

Inareaswherespecificrequirementsareplacedonthehygieneandsurfacestrength,e.g.inhospitalconstruction,theKnaufIntegralgyp-sumfibrematerialsarelaminatedwithHPL(highpressurelaminate).The surface design of the HPLmaterials is extremely varied, thusenablingtheopticaldemandstobeintegratedwiththetechnicalre-quirementsofeachproperty.Theflatapplicationtakesplacesimilartothatofveneeringusingspecialadhesive.Post-shapedapplicationsarealsopossible.Ifnotusingmetalprotectionstrips,e.g.inhospitalcorridorsthatalsoserveasemergencywalkways,withnon-combus-tiblesupportmaterialcanonlybemanufacturedusingKnaufIntegralGIFAtec.

5. Embossing process

Theprocessofembossingisrealizedwithprefabricatedpatternvar-nishinathicknessofjustafewmicrometres,coatedwithafirstlayerofprotectingvarnish.ThispackageofvarnishisappliedtocalibratedGIFAtecbyacylinder.Whethermonochomic,woodorfantasydesign–uptometalliclustre–therearenearlyunlimitedpossibilities.The surface hardness even withstands the „scratching-coin-test“without leaving scratch marks. Some dozen standardized designsareavailableonshortcall.Amultiplicityofspecialappearancesareavailableonrequestforaminimumquantityofc.4,000m².Ofcourseedgeembossingispossible.Forprofile-followingspecialembossingcylindersarerequired.Depending on the selected surface-protecting varnishing, the glosslevelrangegoesfrommatt-finisheduptohigh-glossfinished.EmbossedGIFAtecpanelsareclassifiednon-combustibleA2acc.toDIN4102-01.

7. Fluid coverings

9. Floor coverings

TheKnauf IntegralGIFAfloorsystemscouldbeeasilyprovidedwithallcustomaryfloorcoveringslike,forexample,carpetsorsmoothsur-faceslikePVCandlinoleum,ceramictilesornaturalstoneaswellasparquet.FindmoreinformationsinourtechnicaldatasheetsF18andF19.

8. Construction site coating

ThesurfaceofKnauf IntegralGIFAtecpanelscouldalsobecoatedat the construction site after they have been fitted. To do this, theelementsurfacestobecoatedhavetobeprimed.Paintandcoatingslike,forexample,paper,textileorfibreglasswallpaperscanbeappliedasusual.Itisalsopossibletoapplyceramictileswithoutaproblem.Ifnecessary,sealantmayneedtobeapplied(e.g.withKnaufsurfacesealer).

The non-combustible GIFAtec large-sized gyp-sum fibre panels are used formanufacturing offurniture in e.g. escape routesor for the impactprotectionof thewallsofcorridorsofe.g.hospi-tals insteadof the flammablematerialswoodorderivedtimberproducts.ThinpanelsofGIFAteccouldbebent tocurvedstructures.

The glueing of some GIFAtec panels to get athickerpanelispossible.GIFAtec1500couldbeusedinKnaufdrywallcon-structionstogetbulletresistantdrywalls.Forfur-therinformationaskyourlocalKnaufcompany.Protect GIFAtec gypsum fibre material againstwaterbytakingsuitablemeasures.

Processing and installation

GIFAtec gypsum fibre material could be cut,milled,drilled,sanded,stapled,nailed,screwed...withthetoolsandmachinesusedforderivedtim-ber products.To reduce the disposal of dust anexhausterisrecommended.Consider the extension of GIFAtec for fixaturesonsite.

GIFAtec1100couldbeprocessedwithHM-tippedtools,diamond-tippedtoolsarerecommendedforfast runningmachines.Screwscouldbefixed independencyontypeanddiameterof thescrewswithoutpredrilling.GIFAtec1500couldbeprocessedwithHM-tippedtoolswithslowrunningmachinesonly.Fast run-ningmachineshavetobeequipedwithdiamond-tippedtools.

Nailsandstapleshavetobetestedintheirbehavi-orofpermeation.GIFAtec1500mustbepredrilledforusingscrews.NoticetheweightofapieceoffurnituremadeofGIFAtec, if necessary installation of single partsonsitehavetobeplanned.

GroundingThestructurefortheinstallationofGIFAtechastoholdatleastthebearingstrengthfortheexpectedusageload.

Ithastobeevenortobelevelledbyinstallingalevellinglayerorbeeingaveragedoutbytheusedmountingparts(e.g.glueingsystem).

Contact points of oily or greasy subgrades withGIFAtechavetobeisolatedbyasuitablebarrierlayer.WetsubgradesareunsuitedforinstallationofGIFAtec.

Glueing, coating and coveringForglueingofprimedGIFAtecpanelsholohedralPVAadhesivesandhotgluesaresuitable.Bond-inghastobetested.Temperatureanddurationofpressingwhilehotglueingprocedurehavetobeadjusted.Application of veneer or laminate only with acountermoveapplicationon thebacksideof thepanel.

Nut- / Feder- Klebstoff (glue for tongue andgroove), Knauf Integral Flächenklebstoff (gluefor the2nd layer)orKnaufUSGSystemsAqua-panelJointAdhesive(filled)aredependingonthepurposeadaptable.Other glueing systemshavetobetestedontheirusability.Testsofthepulloffstrengthhave tobedoneat leastononespeci-men.

Fluid coverings like e.g. epoxy resinmaterial orfluidceramicsmustbeelastifiedandwatervapourpermeable.Theycouldbeapplied toGIFAtec inworkshop.Elastic coverings like e.g. PVC, linoleum to begluedwithsuitableadhesive. Inelastic coveringslike e.g. ceramic tiles or natural stone must befixed with flexible mortar in the sufficient thick-ness.
