Felician Award WinnerDuring the volunteer appreciation luncheon, Tim Lindloff, FV Volunteer Coordinator, named Harriet Peach as the 2017 recipient of the Felician Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service at Felician Village.

Peach volunteers by overseeing the daily organizing of the chapel and the chapel décor. She has been volunteering for over 29 years and volunteers 60-65 hours per month.Peach was nominated by two individuals. While presenting the award, Lindloff read some of the remarks from the nom-ination forms. “Harriet has made a big difference in bringing joy, fun and companionship to everyone she meets,” Lindloff read. “Harriet embodies all aspects of our mission at Felician Village, she truly responds to Blessed Angela’s invitation,“Serve where you are needed.” This award recognizes an individual whose volunteer actions have made a significant impact on the residents/operations of Felician Village. The recipient of this award exemplifies the core values of Felician Village by living out the healing ministry of Jesus and providing compassionate care that respects the dignity of each person served.

What year did you begin volunteering? 1988How did you become a volunteer at FV?A special person in my life accepted a God given transfer position as an RN at St. Mary’s. After some time she needed health care and I assisted as a volunteer.What was your first impression of FV? As I stepped into the door at Felician Village, employers, employees and residents greeted me with great kindness and welcomed me. What surprised you most about volunteering at FV?Residents eager to visit and anxious for conversation or help.

What do you wish other people knew about FV?Patients graciously accept me as a helper as they acknowledge God’s help through my efforts.When your family/friends find out that you volunteer at FV, what do they say or ask?Friends or family are not surprised of my volunteering, as they share in satisfaction of my doing it. “Mom, it’s always been in you to give help when possible.”What might someone be surprised to know about you?My employment years were chosen to help people & the community including law, finances, life safety and social life.What is it like to volunteer at FV? Renew past friendships and develop new ones. Feeling of doing God’s work on earth. Show love of neighbor. Give thanks to God for your own gifts.If someone was hesitant to volunteer at Felician Village, what would you tell them? “We know our own strength when we experience how strong our ‘LOVE’ makes us!” Volunteer, try it, you’ll like!

Celebrating Seniors Week A Success!Felician Village celebrated seniors week May 14 – 20, 2017. During the weeklong celebra-tion many activities for residents and staff took place that incorporated the theme of “The Spirit of America.” Activities kicked off with a special waffle breakfast for residents and a “Felician Village Has Talent Show” where staff, residents and volunteers performed skits, played musical instruments, sang and danced. As the week continued musical entertainment was provided by Old Time Rebel, Jerry Eckert and John Langman and delicious treats of apple pie and red, white and blue popsicles were served. Residents also enjoyed playing a modified version of bingo, “I Love America” bingo.Celebrating seniors week coincided with the Manitowoc County Health and Fitness Day, Wednesday, May 17. On this day Felician Village staff volunteered to take residents for a walk outside. This activity has been enjoyed by both staff and residents for many years.Celebrating seniors week at Felician Village recognizes the staff, volunteers and our residents. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make this a special week for everyone!

Recently there was a tragic fire at Parkview Haven Apartments in the city of Manitowoc with the loss of one life and the displacement of approximately 88 residents from that building. In keeping with the values of the Felician Sisters, Felician Village was called upon to arrange for housing for those who had nowhere to go. Many thanks go out to our employees who were able to make this happen rather quickly as this person lost everything he owned.The 2017-18 budget and strategic plan was submitted to the Board of Directors at our Annual Meeting on May 23. Both documents were approved and will now go to Felician Services Inc. for final review and approval before the end of June. As the long-term care environment continues to change, we continue to reach out into the community, along with local partners, to identify and meet unmet needs of seniors. Felician Village is well positioned to continue as the leader in Senior Services in Manitowoc County as demonstrated by the fact that for SEVEN straight years we have been voted “Best in the Lakeshore” by the community. Voting in the Herald Times Reporter’s “Best of the Lakeshore” contest for senior independent living, assisted living, nursing home and rehabilitation is from June 7 through June 21, and we would again appreciate your votes.Of course, these accolades would not be possible without YOU. Thank you for your commitment and compassion to our residents and families. I continue to thank you for your hard work as does the Board of Directors and leadership team. It is because of you that we are able to continue the ministry of the early Felician Sisters who founded St. Mary’s in 1887. We are proud to continue this healing ministry of Jesus by providing compassionate care that respects the dignity of each person we serve.Let’s be “Best of ” EIGHT years in a row!

The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT)® is a first-hand glimpse into the world of someone with dementia. It was created by P.K. Beville, M.S., an award-winning geriatric specialist, dementia expert, and founder of Second Wind Dreams, Inc. The VDT® is an evidence-based, scientifi-cally proven method of building a greater understanding of the physical and mental challenges of people that have Alzheimer’s and dementia through the use of patented

sensory tools and direction. Thanks to a donation from Dee Ann Keip, who personally knows the experience of caring for a loved one with dementia, Felician Village is now able to provide the Virtual Dementia Tour® to our staff and offer through our Caregiver College. The unique experience helps provide better per-son-centered care for those with Alzhei-mer’s and dementia. On March 6, Lisa Voda, Lu Ann Luckow and Connie Thimmig hosted a state-wide training at Felician Village and became VDT® facilitators. To implement this excit-

ing program for Felician Village staff, they began to train all RNs, LPNs, CNAs, RAs, Med Techs, Restorative Aids, SWs, QOL staff, and Pastoral Care in April and plan to offer monthly through 2017. The rest of the employees and volunteers at Felician Village will then complete this education in 2018 so that all staff have this dementia training as well as Hand In Hand.Any questions, please contact Connie Thimmig at (920)684-7171, ext. 351.

Over the past year, with the help of Tim Lindloff, Volunteer Coordinator, the teaching staff from Jackson School and Dale Krueger of the Kiwanis Club, ten residents from across campus became pen pals with the K-Kids group from Jackson Elementary School in Manitowoc.Recently the residents and students gathered at Felician Village to meet in person! At the gathering, pen pals exchanged pictures, hugs and stories. Residents and students alike agreed how

valuable and fun this program was. Eva (a student) said, “I liked getting letters from my pen pal and learning about her childhood and how it was so different than mine.” Fran, a Gardens resident said, “Meeting today for the first time affected me emotionally. I will keep my pen pals photo forever.” They are looking forward to being a part of it again next year!
