Dependable timber supply • Responsibly sourced • Skilfully produced • Reliably delivered
Wherever you work throughout the construction supply chain, we all want to make sure that the timber and wood products we buy and use are from sustainable sources.
At Snows Timber, we’re renowned for responsible purchasing. Some 97% of our product range is available with chain of custody certification: ask your regular Snows contact if you have any queries or specific certified timber requirements that may help you to win more business.
We have held timber chain of custody certification – both FSC® and PEFC™ - continuously for over a decade. We source mainly from certified producers in northern Europe including Britain, also from the USA, and in the case of our FSC® certified hardwood-faced plywood, from China. All our wood procurement also complies with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR).
We are Timber Trade Federation Responsible Purchasers, which means we undertake all necessary due diligence to ensure our products are sourced legally and sustainably. We report annually on our performance. For further information, visit the Timber Trade Federation’s website, and look for information on the Responsible Purchasing Process (RPP). You are also welcome to check our chain of custody certification via the web portals of both FSC and PEFC.

RESPONSIBLY-SOURCED, NATURALLY.
Sustainably-grown, legally-harvested timber products benefit the environment. Even accounting for transport, some wood products carrying chain of custody certification may be carbon neutral, according to industry sources.

CUSTOMER VIEWSWhat do you like about dealing with Snows Timber?
THE SERVICE
“The quality of product and the service.”
“Good service, likeable people.”
“The service is second to none.”
“Find the service very good from ordering to delivering.”
Snows’ Trade Packs cover a range of over 200 fast-moving wood products. We offer dependable delivery on all Trade Pack items across England and Wales. On full packs, delivery is 48-72 hours in most areas.
PSEs aren’t simply pieces of rectangular wood. Though often unseen, tradesmen rely on them to support elements of what they’re creating for clients. Quality is therefore important in maintaining both the builders’ reputation - and your own.
Look at the end grain on your PSEs to give you an indication of quality. If the growth rings are close together it means the tree grew slowly. In northern Europe, despite 24-hour summer sunshine in countries like Norway and Sweden, the short summers and long dark winters mean tree growth is slower, creating more dense, thus better quality, wood fibre.
We source the wood we use to produce PSEs mainly from Scandinavian countries, where trees grow slowly. We offer a choice of materials and qualities in our Trade Pack PSE range, from Unsorted Redwood to Sawfalling Whitewood. Giving your customers more options to choose from means greater sales opportunities for your business.
For help in finding the right PSE selection for your local customer base, ask your regular Snows Timber contact for advice.

Plumbers are some of the biggest users of PSEs. They use them for framing cupboards in kitchens,
cloakrooms and bathrooms, and for framing around pipework when boxing it in. Make sure you
have some signage to direct them from the plumbing displays to your PSEs, or display some PSE samples and information in the plumbing
& heating area.

Amongst the 25% of merchant turnover created by timber & wood products, machined products like skirtings and architraves offer some of the best margins. Good presentation of products – from ‘housekeeping’ in the racks to clear labelling - is likely to give you the greatest chance of successfully selling these products.
Careful buying is the other half of the profitability equation. Learn more about how skirtings and architraves are produced, and why it’s important to stock a high quality dense-grained material for the best dimensional stability, by asking your regular Snows contact. We’re happy to share our knowledge and expertise with our customers, to help you define the most profitable range for your local area, and to fill in any knowledge gaps you may have.
For every buyer presenting at your trade counter, there is a balance to be struck between the appearance, quality, price and application of the wood they want to buy. As an independent firm, Snows Timber has the freedom to choose the best quality wood for the products we manufacture, and offer a range of grades to suit your local market. We help you to offer the most saleable choice to your customers.

MOULDING A PROFITABLE RANGE
INTERIOR MOULDINGS
Interior mouldings are valuable products, offering good margins. Their designs are ancient too. The Torus shape was used by the ancient Egyptians, and the Greeks and Romans were familiar with Ovolo, Ogee and Scotia. ‘Beads’ were used extensively to ring the changes between different layers of decoration and ‘drips’ were also in practical use. So next time you’re re-arranging your stock of mouldings, know that you’re part of an ancient tradition, still profitably alive today.
With around 40% of Britain’s housing stock pre-dating the Second World War, there’s still a worthwhile market for interior mouldings. The quality of timber is a key factor in successful mouldings sales. If the growth rings are close together in the end grain of your timber it’s come from slowly-growing northern European trees that produce the best fibre. Keeping sufficient stock and good ‘housekeeping’ - regularly sorting through the racks removing and/or re-cutting damaged lengths – are two other essentials.
As a guide to selling, you’ll find that products for window & door repairs – like weathermould and windowboard – sell best in the better weather in late spring and summer. Handrails are often installed as autumn sets in. Decorative internal mouldings may sell better in autumn and winter, when builders are working indoors rather than outdoors. Don’t hesitate to use our expertise in helping you to run a profitable timber centre: we’ve valuable knowledge to share.

Many types of mouldings have their origins in ancient
times. Dado rails, though, are a more ‘modern’ invention.
As British town houses began to have more elegant furniture and decorated walls
in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ‘chair rails’ - what we know today
as Dado rails - were fixed along the wall to stop damage to both chairs and walls.

MATCHING YOUR OFFERING TO THE MARKET
CLADDING, FRAMING & FLOORING
Cladding? Flooring? Panelling? Wainscot? Advising on the right product means finding out more about the jobs that your customer wants to do. If it’s flooring, tongue & groove timber will normally be best. Moisture content is key to a stable floor, so advise customers to leave the timber to acclimatise in the room for which it’s intended for a day or two. An alternative to standard tongue & groove softwood is to offer our SnowFloor, which is extra kiln-dried to a moisture content of 12%.
Tongue & groove sections can also be used vertically as panelling or wainscoting for part-covering internal walls, usually finished off with a moulding. For cladding a whole wall vertically, V-jointed tongue & groove is a better choice. The Claddings category can also include products like Shiplap and Loglap - all can be used to build or repair outdoor buildings, if painted with suitable coatings. The recent trend for hot tubs in gardens has led to a sales increase in Loglap, as home-owners try to mirror Scandinavian style in their gardens.
If your customer intends to construct their own garden building they will additionally need framing, also to be found in this section of the Manual, and possibly panel products for interior walls or flooring, depending on their preference. See the Panel Products section and offer your customer a one-stop shop for their garden building needs.

DID YOU KNOW?Arranging adjoining or overlapping wood to enclose living space is one of the earliest-known methods
of house-building. The Anglo-Saxons were thought to be the first in Britain to create their homes and halls
using a form of wooden cladding. Yet in 2013, archaeological remains uncovered in the City of London
showed that the Romans too built timber-clad walls.
DOVETAIL IN WITH YOUR LOCAL JOINERS
JOINERY
The joinery market in the UK is estimated to use up to 400,000m3 (cubic metres) of timber each year, representing a significant market for merchants. The sector is said to be worth £3.8 billion. Many professional joiners belong to trade organisations like the British Woodworking Federation. You may find local joiners through their website: www.bwf.org.uk
Time spent on dealing with timber defects is money lost to the joiner. Splits, shakes, wane and staining all cause time-consuming production problems. Profitable joinery work relies on using top quality timber that enables wood machining to continue uninterrupted. Stocking fine-grained, dense timber in larger than usual sections will enable you to service the joinery market. Ask for advice from your regular Snows contact on the best joinery sections to stock.
Joinery companies also work throughout the year, bringing you an opportunity for business at times when seasonally-based timber sales slow down. Joiners value the working qualities and coating acceptance of wood grown slowly in the short summers and long winters of northern Europe and Scandinavia. Pine (Pinus sylvestrys, or Redwood) and Spruce (Picea abies, or Whitewood) are used widely by manufacturers.
In addition to softwood joinery sections ranging downwards from 100x225mm, Snows offer products for specialised applications: wide whitewood for stair manufacture, and Green-split, centre-free material for turning, sashes, frames, door stiles & rails, and for handrails. Ask your regular Snows contact for details.

Snows Timber, as an independent company, is able to choose from the best suppliers of quality timber across northern Europe and further afield. Responsibly-procured timber arrives by ship and is taken to one of our four production sites.
Packs of timber are unloaded to the feed-in. They are checked for quality as they begin their journey through our high-speed processing lines.
After further processing, timber emerges to be stacked in Trade Pack quantities and wrapped for cleanliness, storage and delivery.
Loaded and ready for delivery, a Snows Timber lorry leaves one of our four production sites. Our fleet includes HIAB Crane offload vehicles.
OLD IDEAS AND NEW MATERIALS
PANELPRODUCTS
We tend to think of plywood and other sheet materials as modern inventions. Yet an early form of 6-ply material was found in an Egyptian pyramid dating back over 4,000 years. A patent for making something closer to modern plywood was first filed in Britain in the 1790s. Modern plywood was used extensively in the Second World War for boats and fighter-bombers such as the Mosquito.
Plywood is made by laminating (sticking together) thin sheets of timber (veneers) with the grain running in alternate directions to increase strength. OSB (Oriented Strand Board), first patented in the 1960s, gets its strength from strands of wood material oriented in the same direction in its central layers and cross-oriented on its outer layers, giving it a high strength to weight ratio. Layers are bonded together and compressed at high temperature into sheets.
MDF was invented accidentally, as a result of a technical problem, in the USA in 1966. Wood chips are ground, mixed with bonding agents, dry-formed into a ‘mattress’, compressed into sheets and cured under heat. Its advantages are easier cutting, lighter weight and a uniform finish.
Moisture can affect wood-based panels, both during construction and in use, for example where water leakage may occur. It is important to check potential use with customers and advise on the correct product for their needs. See the tables in this section and ask your Snows contact for help.

Sturdy, stylish and sustainable: SnowDek timber decking is responsibly sourced and skilfully produced to give you lasting results.
Snows Timber is renowned for selecting quality wood from certified suppliers across northern Europe. The trees grow slowly, providing you with dense-grained, quality decking. We produce enough softwood decking each year to stretch from London to Gibraltar. Our expertise in manufacturing shows through in the SnowDek end product.
Building Regulations may apply to some elements of your customer’s proposed deck such as stairs, balustrades and the correct grade of structural timber to make the under-frame for their deck. Planning permission may also apply. Customers should check for themselves on any applicable regulations. For more information, search online at www.woodcampus.co.uk for the video: ‘Decking in 90 Seconds’, produced by the Timber Decking & Cladding Association.
We also offer a range of specialist decking products: anti-slip decking, recycled wood composite decking, our own ThermoWood® decking, and Yellow Balau hardwood decking.
Snows’ softwood decking boards are pressure treated to give long-term protection against decay using TANALITH E™ preservative, to the relevant Use Classes for outdoor situations, as defined by British Standards. TANALISED™ timber has a 15-year service life if correctly installed using appropriate fixings. For safety information specific to the TANALITH E™ pressure treatment that we apply to our timber decking please visit www.tanalisedtimber.co.uk.

Quality, sustainable certified timber decking
All wood used by Snows Timber is purchased in compliance with the European Timber Regulation (EUTR). We are a Timber Trade Federation Responsible Purchaser,
which means we undertake all due diligence on our purchasing. We hold Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and PEFC™ chain of custody certification, and have
done for a decade. All our softwood decking is produced from wood traceable through chain of custody certification and is sourced from responsibly managed forests in
northern Europe, where it grows slowly, producing top quality wood fibre.
We also produce ThermoWood® thermally-modified decking, Yellow Balau hardwood decking, and anti-slip decking. For more information about our products
and our Environmental Policy please visit www.snowstimber.com.
TANALISED treated timber is a low maintenance material. No further preservative treatment is necessary. However your customer may wish to add colour or a stain to their decking.
Make sure you signpost your range of coatings alongside your decking. We would recommend a high performance coating that allows the timber to breathe and is easy to maintain. Whichever
decorative coating is used, the manufacturer’s guidelines relating to its use on timber decking should be followed at all times.
Alternatively, coating products are available through Snows Timber. To enhance the natural look of timber decking, customers can apply a coat of a clear water sealant, such as HICKSON DECOR
Waxcoat, every few years to provide a water repellent protection to the treated timber. HICKSON DECOR Antislip is a clear, fine aggregate coating for flat profile decking boards
to help resist slipping in wet weather.
In addition to coatings, remind customers of your offering on fixings, power and hand tools, and also work-benches. To market a complete decking package, you may also want to offer weed-suppressant
fabric to go under the decking, and aggregates such as gravel to go on top of the fabric. Many merchants are now also offering large garden plant pots and planters, and outdoor lighting, alongside their decking.
For help in putting together a summer leaflet on your decking, e-mail [email protected] or ask for help through your regular Snows contact.

THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR THE RIGHT USE
OUTDOORPRODUCTS
“What is the wood being used for?” It may seem a silly question, but selling outdoor timber with a preservative treatment relevant to the end use of the wood is essential to giving the wood the longest possible life for the customer.
Timber treatments cover the ‘Use Class’ of the product, numbered from 1-4. Use Class 4 – timber that is permanently in soil/ground and potentially freshwater contact – will cover the majority of your customers’ outdoor timber needs. Timber treated for Use Class 4 is usually impregnated with preservative under high pressure in a vacuum chamber.
Softwood timber (mostly Pine) is inserted into the vacuum chamber and air is pumped out. Preservative treatment is added to the tank and is drawn into the wood, giving it a pale greenish colouring. Hence the term ‘Green-treated’. Over time this will fade to a greyish colour, but fading does not affect the protection. A brown dye can also be added for brown fencing.
The preservative penetrates all around except in the core of the wood. That’s why, for example with decking, or in other situations where treated timber is cut to size, an end-grain sealant coating must be used to preserve the integrity of the treatment. Check which product you sell and can recommend to customers, such as Ensele.

Preservative timber treatment takes place in a controlled environment and the treatment chemicals used comply with current EU regulations. Specific safety information varies with the treatment method and manufacturer, but there are some common safety rules:
• Treated wood should not be burned on open fires or domestic wood burning stoves.
• Treated wood waste and offcuts should be disposed of at a local authority waste recycling centre or as directed by the local authority.
• Wear work gloves, goggles and a dust-preventing mask when working with treated wood.
• Wash hands after working with treated wood including before eating, drinking, smoking or going to the toilet.
• Treated timber should be fixed with galvanised or stainless steel fixings.
NEW BUSINESS POTENTIAL
STRUCTURALTIMBERS
Structural timbers are the bedrock of many merchants’ timber sales. In recent years, the self-build market, which now represents around 8% of new housing and an estimated £2billion in building materials sales, is worth attention for potential business development. Highlighting your offering of structural timbers, alongside panel products and Snows’ range of specialist timber claddings, could help you to make your mark in this sector. Snows’ employes qualified strength graders to give you extra reassurance.
