GOLF COURSES/COUNTRY CLUBS

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCEWith timing often directly at odds with a project’s difficulty, an owner’s representative is an essential member of the team.

Sometimes being on time is not just a convenience, it’s a must. In the construction business, on time delivery is constantly challenged by impossible circumstances. Unless an organization is prepared for that, it can be overwhelming, especially if construction management is not something the staff does on a regular basis.

The Project: The complete renovation of the entire clubhouse at Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, MD – in 76 days.

The Need: The Lakewood Country Club needed to upgrade and they needed it done in a hurry. As is the case in most country clubs, a steady stream of events and activities left Lakewood a window of only 76 days to renovate - from top to bottom - the complete look and feel of the clubhouse. It was a scenario brought about by the book-end nature of major social events at the club on Dec 22, 2008 and March 8, 2009. Only the days in between those events were available for the work to be done.

The Solution: Owner representative firm, Artisan Partners.

The Value: With precious little time there was little room for error and a premium on organization. The Lakewood Country Club correctly assessed the daunting nature of the job and enlisted the owner’s representation services of Artisan Partners with a singular purpose in mind – make sure the construction team delivered a high quality product by March 7.

The Artisan Partners team immediately went to work, planning backwards from the necessary delivery date. Artisan Partners coordinated key project logistics among the architect and designers selected by Lakewood and assisted in the selection of the lead contractor on the project. Working with those staff members, Artisan Partners ensured that every aspect of the project fit snugly inside the 76 day window and if something didn’t, it received an immediate corrective action plan.

One of the crucial processes Artisan Partners implemented on behalf of Lakewood was the assessment of long lead priorities. By organizing the architect, designers and contractor around the items that required the most advance preparation, time constraints were addressed early and solutions to challenging situations were implemented.

In the end, Artisan Partners helped the Lakewood Country Club achieve its desired renovation on time and on budget and more importantly helped it keep its commitment to its customer on March 8, 2009. As their staff had done on numerous occasions throughout their careers, the Artisan Partners team closely managed the project in order to deliver the project on time and on cost making sure their client’s interests were protected at every turn.
