can be proud of having three cathedrals built before the middle
of the 13th century, as well as the Cathedral Church of the
Assumption that can be seen almost from any city point and
other orthodox architectural objects reflecting the church history
of Smolensk.
Museums. The most part of museums in Smolensk are a part of
Smolensk State Museum-Reservation, which is one of the largest
museum complexes in the country. Museum expositions are held
in the buildings with architectural landmark status. They date
from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th centuries and belong to
former manors and family estates of famous Smolensk citizens
like patron of arts duchess M.K. Tenisheva, composer M.I.
Glinka, traveler N.M. Przhevalsky, poet A.T. Tvardovsky.
Every year Smolensk Museum-Reservation opens about 40 new
