Giving a pet as a present seems like a great idea, butshoppers might want to give it more considerationbefore giving a gift that is such a considerableresponsibility. A puppy at Christmas or a bunny atEaster may be given with good intentions, but that well-meaning sentiment can easily backfire, ending with thepet being given up for adoption when recipients dontfeel up to the task of raising a pet. In such instances, thecompanion animal pays the steepest price.
Though it often is, buying a pet should not be animpulse purchase. You see sad eyes looking back at youfrom behind a cage door and want to give that animala new home. However, introducing an animal into afamily is not a decision to take lightly. You must factorhow well the pet will fit in with the family dynamic. Doschedules allow for quality time spent with the animal? Is it a financially good time to care for an animal thatwill cost money? Are you aware of how long the petwill live? Making those big decisions for a person onthe receiving end of your well-intentioned gift may be
crossing a line. Would you want to have such a life-changing decision made for you?
Furthermore, the holiday season is not one ideallysuited for making careful decisions. People are oftenswept up in emotions and even stress, and shoppersmay not be thinking rationally.
The hectic nature of the holiday season can be adifficult time for a pet to grow acclimated to itsnew environment. He or she may be frightened toassimilate or take longer to settle down. Pets often need
several weeks of quiet and constant care to becomecomfortable in their new environments. Here are someother reasons why the holidays are not a good time fornew pets.
Holiday visitors may frighten the new pet and he orshe may become weary of strangers at the outset.
The activities in the household may pose safetyhazards for the young animal. An abundance of richfoods and various decorations could be ingested, potentially causing illness.
New pets should be carefully supervised aroundchildren to see how they behave. A child may not beaccustomed to handling a puppy or kitten and couldinjure the animal. Similarly, the pet may be skittishand lash out at the child. Adults busy with holidayobligations may be easily distracted and miss how theirchild is interacting with the new pet.
Once the glow of the holidays wear off, childrenmay be disillusioned with the new responsibility thathas fallen into their hands. They may not like the
responsibility that comes with being a good pet owner.
Reputable pet breeders and animal shelters often discourageindividuals from adopting or purchasing pets as holiday gifts. Many organizations and animal businesses require a carefulvetting of potential pet parents to ensure the animal will beplaced with a family and in a home that is suitable.
Animal welfare groups warn that an estimated 50 percentof pets adopted during the holidays end up right back atshelters. This can scar the pet. Avoid the temptation of giving acompanion animal as a present. If it is your intention to gift ananimal, talk to the gift recipient and discuss the pros and consbeforehand. Then you can work together and make the rightdecision for all parties involved, including the pet.

Iredell County Toys for Tots coordinator Vivian Meletisbelieves there is no greater satisfaction than bringinga smile to a childs face and hopes that residents willcontinue to help make Christmas possible for children inthe community again this year.
Each year, the U. S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Programcollects new, unwrapped toys during the months ofOctober, November and December to distribute thosetoys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in thecommunity. In Iredell County, the number of familieswho have participated in the program has more thandoubled since 2010, when 1,850 youngsters were served.
Last year, we helped 3,777 kids and requests are alreadypouring in, she said. We already have 230 new childrenthat we have not served in previous years.
Meletis thinks that the number is on the rise becauseorganizations that have been able to help in the past areno longer financially able to.
We arent sure if people arent able to give like theyused to or if they have changed the organizations theysupport, but weve had to assist more organizations thanever before, she said. Last year, we assisted the SalvationArmy during their campaign because they had more than200 children that werent picked from their angel treesand they were out of funds to buy gifts.
Collection boxes for this years toy drive will be set outaround the community on November 1, with more than100 boxes set up throughout the county. Meletis hopes
to see more early donations this year, as the toys need to bedistributed by December 14.
Most of the time, people tend to donate closer to Christmas, she said. We appreciate any and all things that we get forthe children, but its especially helpful for us to get the toysorganized and ready before the children go on their Christmasbreak from school.
Meletis added that any toys they receive after the deadline gotoward their inventory for the following year, but that it leavesthem having to raise more money for this years presents.
God always provides, though, and every year we are able tomeet our goal, she said.

This year, Meletis expects to see more children than ever whoneed their help, and hopes that she can gather more volunteersto distribute gifts.
We need assistance for when the parents come to pick upthe childrens presents and really, its the best part about theexperience, she said. Last year, we were all crying because theparents are all so touched that strangers care so much about
their children and ensure they have a great Christmas. Its soemotional. The parents walk in and theyre a little embarrassedthat they need to ask for help, but they leave feeling loved andknowing their children will have a Christmas to remember.

Holiday decorating is a big part of theholiday season. Bins are taken out of theattic or garage, and decorations are onceagain given their opportunity to shine forseveral weeks before being packed awayagain.
Among the many decorations families
use to deck the halls are ornaments thatwere made by hand. This year creatinghomemade ornaments can be a craftyproject that helps families make newholiday memories.
Christmas tree ornaments come in allshapes and sizes and often tell the storiesof holiday traditions. There are severaldifferent ways to create personalized,do-it-yourself ornaments and leave thecheap, easily broken ornaments from the
dollar stores behind.
Photo OrnamentsFun photo ornaments showcase howa family has changed and grown overthe years. Experiment with differentways to create these ornaments. Youcan glue a photo to a ceramic ornamentand cover it with decoupage glaze to setit permanently. Try purchasing clear,
glass ornaments, then remove the top ofthe ornament, which is usually spring-loaded, before slipping a photo insideand replacing the top. You also canlaminate a photo, punch a hole in thetop and affix a ribbon.
Ceramic OrnamentsThe popularity of paint-it-yourselfpottery has led to an increase in ceramicand crafts shops across the country.During the holiday season such shopsoffer many holiday items that can bepainted. Often the store will then fire thepieces after they are painted so that theyare shiny and hardened for display.
Those who want to do their paintingat home can visit their local craft orhobby shop, where typically there are
unfinished ceramic ornaments that canbe painted with acrylic paints foundright in the next aisle. A finishing coatof clear glaze will help protect theornaments from year to year.
Wood CraftsMany of todays craft centers haveexpanded to include sections devoted
to unfinished wood items. Everythingfrom letters to animal cutouts to boxesand rocking horses can be purchasedand finished. Turn keepsake boxes intopainted and ribbon-adorned gift boxes.Stain a treasure chest that can be usedto store reindeer snacks for Santascrew. Turn small decorative pieces into
ornaments for the tree. Paint and affixwood initials onto stocking holders toidentify to whom each stocking belongsCrafty individuals also can turn plainwood plaques into signs with cleversayings, such as Park your sleigh here.
Scavenge Around the HouseYoung children can use any mediumfor making ornaments. Garlands madeof macaroni or popcorn are traditional.Fabric scraps can be sewn and stuffed
with potpourri for homemade scentsatchels. Hand-drawn pictures can bemade and laminated and hung on thetree.
The only obstacle with regard to DIYornaments is a limited imagination.Homemade items can add whimsy and apersonal touch to the holiday season.

Giving kids
One Special Christmas
continued on page 15
Giving children a special Christmasto remember has been the goal of afundraiser begun in 1973 by Mooresville
resident Don Chapman. As a college student inTennessee, he started building woodentoys for children. Chapmans effortscontinue today through his nonprofitorganization, One Special Christmas, which is marking its 25th anniversaryof building furniture to auction -- alongwith other donated items to raise money to purchasetoys for underprivileged children. After college, Chapman got a job teachingat Central Piedmont Community College and he
engaged his students in helping to build toys forchildren at Christmas. In 1989, he decided thatinstead of giving the wooden toys to the children, heand his volunteers would build furniture and a logcabin, which would be auctioned off and the moneyused to buy toys that the needy children had on theirwish lists.Even after Chapman was no longer a full timeinstructor at CPCC, he continued teachingwoodworking and building cabins with the help of
others, with the money going to makeChristmas a special time for others.Chapman died in 2003.
Without him around, they were not ableto continue with the log cabins, said hisdaughter, Emily Valenti. But the buildingof handmade furniture continues, withthe Charlotte Woodworkers Associationbeing a big source of those donateditems, Valenti noted. Leadership changes had to be made
with the fundraiser and in 2008, Valenti and herbrother, Brendon Chapman, joined others on theboard of directors to be a part of continuing thatdream of their dads to help children. There had been
concern for how this fundraiser would continue intothe future, Valenti said, but the auction -- now inits 25th year -- will continue this year as in the past, along with a new online pilot program to reach needychildren in the Mooresville Graded School District. Normally reaching out of town to childrenin some of the more impoverished counties of NorthCarolina, this new program will help local childrenhave a special Christmas as well. The funds from theauction, scheduled for Nov. 30 at Oehlers Barbecue

Barn in Charlotte, will go to buy toys for children in RobesonCounty, and the funds generated online will benefit children inthe Mooresville area. Handmade furniture, a weeks stay at a log cabin, andother donated items will be a part of the items that attendeesto the auction can bid on. An updated list of auction itemswill be available on the One Special Christmas website, www.onespecialChristmas.com.
The website will also direct folks how to donateitems for the auction or by logging onto the site and choosingMooresville Graded School District, you can start a fundraisingpage or donate to someone who has a page and make theChristmas wishes of local children come true. The names of children in need are referred by schoolsand counselors, Valenti said. Children who might fall throughthe cracks and not receive anything, she noted. Those involvedwith One Special Christmas want these children to knowthat someone cares about you, she continued. And theywant them to receive not just something (for Christmas)but something special to make you feel you are special and
worthy. Once the funds are raised and the gifts are bought,a wrapping party is held at Broad Street United MethodistChurch in Mooresville and then One Special Christmasvolunteers deliver them. A church in the town where the presents are deliveredusually hosts a party for the children and their parents. Duringthe party, Valenti noted, her brother Brendon will tell thechildren that they are cared about, and he shares the story ofthe original St. Nicholas and how he loved Jesus and childrenand lets the children know that this is why they are giving themgifts. He shares that we love Jesus and you too. Jesus is thebest gift of all. Not only can they share gifts, but they canshare the gospel with the children, Valenti said. Sometimes the best presents and the most treasured
ornaments arent the ones that last a lifetime -- theyrethe ones that you can eat!
But dont just bake the same old boring treats forfriends and family. This season, give your holiday treats, eats, gifts and dcor a colorful twist using richly huedsprinkles, frosting and icing.
I love working with sprinkles because theyre notonly delicious, theyre so visual too. Of course you canscatter them over cakes, but you can also swirl them intowaffles, embroider them on cookies or do any number
of creative things with them that look great for theholidays, says Jackie Alpers, a photographer and authorof the new cookbook Sprinkles! Recipes and Ideas forRainbowlicious Desserts.
For a beautiful and delicious batch of edible ornamentsyou can hang on your tree or use to adorn your home, follow this recipe from Alpers for Windowpane Cookies:

1 stick unsalted butter, softened 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar 1 egg at room temperature, beaten 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Approximately 1/2 cup various sanding sugars, sorted bycolor. Place sheets onwire racks to cool for a few minutes before gently removingcookies with a metal spatula. Let cookies cool completelyon wire racks. Store between layers of wax paper to preventsticking in an airtight container for up to one week.To turn the cookies into holiday ornaments, use a bambooskewer or chopstick to poke a hole about 3/4 inch from the topof each cookie before baking. Once baked cookies have cooled,

Thanks to sales featuring heavily discounted items, millionsof people wait to start their holiday shopping until theseason hits full swing. But in spite of such bargains, overextending budgets during the holiday season is tootempting for many shoppers to resist. However, shoppersneed not risk financial peril if they shop smartly and heedsome dos and donts of holiday shopping.
Do Set a BudgetEstablish what you can afford to spend on gifts andother seasonal trimmings early on. The National RetailFederation estimates that the average consumer will spendaround $700 come the holiday season. But not everyperson needs to be a big spender. The buy now, pay latermentality that credit cards offer lands many shoppers introuble, a sticky situation many only notice once the firstbill comes due. If you cannot afford to pay your entirecredit card balance off once the bill arrives, you face steepinterest charges that can quickly add up. Instead, pick a setspending limit and keep to it no matter how tempting itmay seem to overspend with a credit card.
Dont Be Fooled By False SalesRetailers understand that a good advertised deal luresshoppers into their stores. As a result, some retailers markup the cost of certain items in order to slash the prices forholiday sales. Even if you are saving the assumed 50 to 60percent, the final cost of the item still may be higher thannormal. Comparison shop and do your research so youdont fall victim to clever pricing.
Do Schedule Time for ShoppingHectic schedules sometimes result in last-minute shoppingthat leads to impulse purchases. Schedule some distraction-free time for your holiday shopping so youre less likely torush into purchases before thinking them through.
Dont Double BuySome shoppers use the holidays as an excuse to buy more
for themselves than the people on their lists. While itstempting to treat yourself come the holiday season, this is agreat and quick way to deplete your budget. If you plan onusing holiday deals to supplement your own wardrobe orhousehold needs, reduce your spending the rest of the yearand save money for year-end purchases.
Do Collect Coupons and Look forPurchasing Incentives
Comparison shopping not only helps you get the bestprice, but also it can shed light on coupons, shippingdiscounts and other incentives that lower the overall cost oproducts. Search online for Web sites that publish couponsand codes for online discounts, including free shipping.Join a stores marketing list and receive emails with dealssent directly to your inbox.
Dont Be Afraid to Delay SomePurchases if Need Be
If hosting a post-holiday gathering where gifts will beexchanged, its perfectly acceptable to delay buying thosegifts until after Christmas or Chanukah, when many itemscan be found at even lower prices. Many stores reduce priceon merchandise come December 26, so you can wait untilafter the holidays to shop for items that will be exchangedwith distant friends and relatives. This enables you tosave more money and use any received gift cards towardshopping.
Do Keep a Level HeadSome people forget the true meaning of the season isspending time with loved ones. Getting swept away byshopping and worrying about deadlines can make theseason less enjoyable. Dont allow the stress of holidayshopping to compromise an otherwise joyous time of year.

Add it upMathematical foundations provide the building blocks forfuture success, both in school and for the rest of a childslife, says Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell, mathematics educator.Support and encourage your children as they develop theseimportant concepts and related skills at a young age, with toysthat emphasize numbers, counting and beginning conceptswith whole number operations.
Science and MathYou have probably heard a lot about the growing importanceof integrating the learning of STEM science, technology, engineering and mathematics in K-12 schools, says Dr.Carla C. Johnson, science and STEM expert. It is critical tofoster a love and skills in STEM for boys and girls alike witheducational toys that develop self-confidence in the use andapplication of technology.
Choose Wisely
Dont get carried away with the bells and whistles. Youand your kids will quickly look past those. Instead look fortoys that actively engage your kids through technology, bydeeply integrating games and learning, says Dr. Eric Klopfer, platform learning expert.
Build VocabularyChildren absorb new information like sponges. Takeadvantage of their blossoming interests with interactivetoys that highlight letters of the alphabet, the sounds lettersmake and vocabulary, says Dr. Deborah Sharp Libby, earlychildhood language and reading expert. Above all, dont

By blurring the lines of play and education, you can developan early love of learning, and set up your children for success.
How to Pick Toys for YourKids That are Both
FUN ANDEDUCATIONAL
From fostering a love of science to building vocabulary, the toys your children play with can have a large impacton their interests and brain development. So when itcomes to playtime, parents are becoming more selective. With this in mind, smart toymakers are aimingto design toys that are not only fun but also fosterlearning.
For example, VTech, a world leader in age-appropriate anddevelopmental stage-based electronic learning productsfor children, has assembled a team of child developmentexperts to provide feedback on their toys before they hitthe store shelves.
The members of VTechs Panel of Experts are offeringsome helpful hints to parents looking to get smartabout toys for their kids:
Get InvolvedToys can create a bonding experience between parent andchild. Look for toys that emphasize this connection, saysDr. Helen Boehm, psychologist, author and parentingresource expert. For example, a tablet that lets your kidschat safely with you while youre on-the-go is a great wayto bond with them while they are having fun.
Age-appropriateChildrens brains develop at a remarkable pace, andtheir toys should keep up with their development, saysDr. Lise Eliot, an early childhood mental developmentexpert. Toys that are too young or too old get boringor frustrating. Make sure youre keeping your kidschallenged with educational toys that are just right fortheir age.
Consider child-sized, age-appropriate tablets that have thelook and feel of adult mobile devices, but are packed with

DECK THE
HALLSwith PracticalityNothing brings people together like the holidays. Whether youre welcoming children home from a semester at school,or extended family members that may be staying for a while, follow these seven great tips from Tailored Living tohelp make your home a relaxing refuge for loved ones to come together and celebrate:1 Manage Your Holiday Card List: Holiday cards express a sentiment of annual tradition and celebration.Start early by creating a spreadsheet or address book before Thanksgiving. Organize people into categoriessuch as family, friends and co-workers. Creating an electronic database may seem like a big upfront timecommitment, but in the end, youre saving time because edits can easily be made throughout the year. Also, after packing up the tree, save money by buying next years holiday cards at clearance pricing.

2 Keep Decorating Simple: Choose only your favorite holidaydecorations to reduce clutter. For each holiday item you placeon a shelf, take one non-holiday item off and store it until theholiday season is over. If you buy or receive decorative gifts, usthem as an opportunity to retire outdated items that can bedonated to charity.
3 Prepare Your Pantry: Get the Emeril in you ready forholiday feasts. Take inventory of existing pantry items beforegoing grocery shopping for your holiday meal to avoidduplicating items or, even worse, having to make an additionatrip to the store the day of. Spice racks and pull-out bins canhelp a great deal by placing items in plain view. Its easy toskip meals or opt for unhealthy, sugary snacks in the midst ofthe holiday bustle. This can be avoided by organizing quick, healthy snacks towards the front of the pantry within easyreach for you and your kids.4 Add Storage Solutions: To clear out clutter, consider adding
small cabinetry in your kitchen to store items that wont beused all winter long such as an ice cream maker or iced teapitchers. The garage is also a great place to reduce clutter.Whether you use it to store clothing or house a plethora oftools and yard equipment, consider combining labeled storagebins with tall cabinetry and overhead storage racks to betterorganize your belongings. A gridwall or two can come in handas well if youd like to display your tools in a space-saving way.5 Approach Gift Wrapping Differently: Gift wrapping is aninevitable task but it doesnt have to be a chore. All you needis one trip to the store to buy an assortment of gift wrapping
items. Stick with versatile items that can be used for anyoccasion. Theres no need to splurge on a dozen differentprints of wrapping paper either. Instead, purchase a couplerolls of plain craft paper and decorate each wrapped box withunique holiday themed stamps or handmade ribbons.6 Help Your Guests Feel at Home: With the pending arrivalof houseguests, use this time as an opportunity to go throughand organize your guestroom closet. Box items you dontuse on a regular basis. Leave empty hangers, shoe racks, andplenty of open space for your guests attire. Consider addinga maneuverable rod system since it easily allows guests to sortthrough their clothing. Finally, you can install a murphy bed i
you need an additional sleeping area. Murphy beds can be usedyear round and effortlessly fold away to free up space in anygiven room.7 Create a Safer Environment: Dont slip out there! Prep yougarage for the cold, icy months by using flexible floor tiles froma trusted garage organization specialist like Tailored Livingfeaturing PremierGarage. Flexible floor tiles add traction andprevent slipping when snow and ice melt off your car andboots.

If your familys seasonal traditions include taking a holiday
portrait, you probably have a stack of photos that all prettymuch look the same. Rather than adding another stiltedfamily photo to the pile this year, consider breaking out ofthe mold with a candid portrait instead.
Think for a moment about one of your favorite photos. Isit the one where everyone is posed, sitting properly with aperfect smile, all eyes on the camera? Or is it the one whereyou caught an unexpected laugh?
Candid photography is how you can really capture thepersonality and spirit of your subjects, say the experts.
George Lange, author of the new book, The UnforgettablePhotograph: 228 Ideas, Tips, and Secrets for Taking the BestPictures of Your Life, says the secret to great photographyis shooting what a moment feels like, rather than whatit looks like. He is offering all family photographers --whether they are using a point-and-shoot, a top-end manualcamera or smartphone -- tips for capturing their loved onesin special and unique ways.
Be in the MomentFight the nostalgic impulse to take a picture designed to
memorialize the moment for future generations. Instead,be in the moment, shoot in the moment. Encourageinspiration by gathering your family in a place whereeveryday moments occur, such as the backyard or porch.
Ditch the ZoomMove your feet, bend your knees, get your pants dirty. Getlow. Climb above. Get down to the eye-level of the subject.Dont zoom the lens unless its completely necessary. Pushyour camera right into things.
See the LightLight is the photographers palette and toolbox, a kind ofvisual thesaurus that offers a thousand ways to portray thesame scene or subject. Learn to play with it.
Feel the RhythmTheres a natural rhythm to life. Outside the studio, everyscene has its own rhythm, every place its beat. Listen forthat. If youre in sync and just a little bit lucky, the shutterwill open at just the right beat.
Keep Shooting
Often I see people spending more time examining theshots theyve just taken on their camera screen than takingmore pictures. This is not productive! says Lange. Youcant predict when youll get a good shot in a sequence, and you certainly cant see it on a tiny screen. Just keepshooting. No harm asking most subjects for a do-over -- ananother. For kids its a game.
Use Objects Out of ContextProps often make portrait-taking easier by giving subjectssomething to relate to and play with, distracting them fromthe camera. Props taken out of context -- a dining chair on
a lawn, even in a snowstorm -- immediately add interest andfun.
More photography tips can be found atwww.unforgettablephotograph.com.
By rethinking the way you shoot your familys holidayportrait, you can add depth and emotion to your familyphoto album this year.

consider a pair of garden clogs designed for the specificchores associated with working in the yard or garden.Easy-to-clean and waterproof, they make a great present.
Or consider a utility apron in your gift recipients favoritecolors or pattern.
Go Bird-FriendlyNo garden is complete without visits from local wildlife, such as songbirds. Help your gardener transform his orher garden into a wildlife refuge. A birdbath and birdfeeder will help attract birds and encourage them to linger
in the garden longer.
Unfortunately billions of songbirds are killed worldwideeach year due to accidental collisions with window glass, according to the Wilson Ornithological Society. Considera unique gift that makes the area safer for flying friends.A new high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquidcan be applied to windows, containing a component thatbrilliantly reflects ultraviolet sunlight. Christmas spirit radiates from the inside out at SandyHolcombs house on McCrary Road in Mooresville, withnearly every square inch of her home and yard decoratedwith holiday trees, snowmen, reindeer and of course, SantaClaus himself.
Most impressive, however, is Holcombs collection ofminiature Christmas houses, which reside in a four-storydisplay near the front window in her home. At night,
passersby can see the spectacular lighted display with tinyhouses, banks, shops, churches, barbers and grocery stores, all set up with loving care.
I started collecting in 1979 as a tribute to my mom, wholoves Christmas as much as I do, Holcomb said. Shedecorated to the max at our home when I was growing upand I just picked up where she left off.
Today, Holcomb has more than 60 miniature buildingsand is still adding to the display each year, with most of thehomes and shops given to her by her mother as a gift. She
rearranges the tiny structures each year to squeeze in evenmore and the village truly appears to be a tiny, bustlingtown.
When I start setting it up, I dont feel like I am full-size,she said. I feel like I am one of the tiny townspeople andwhen I decorate the village with snow when its all set up, Ising Let It Snow. Its so much fun.
When trying to decide which home was her favorite,Holcomb had to give it some thought. I really like themall, she said. But I think my favorite is the florist.
The tiny village almost suffered a disaster this year, butluckily, Holcomb was able to salvage the town. I wasSkyping with my grandbaby who lives in Alaska to show herthe village, and I happened to look behind me and the townwas tilting at an angle, she said. I was laughing and sayingthe town had an earthquake.
The plastic buckets hidden underneath the display had

started to melt due to the heat of all the lights in thedisplay.
I had to get under there and wedge some woodenboards underneath so it wouldnt collapse, she said. Itcould have been a disaster.
Each year, Holcomb has a party at her home for friendsand family to look at her Christmas displays set upthroughout the house.
Everyone seems to really enjoy the village and looking atall the things Ive collected over the years, she said.
Each room, from her kitchen to the living room to eventhe bathroom has Christmas decorations that light up,sing and dance. Most of her decorations have been givento her as gifts or salvaged over the years.
My husband says he cant go to a room without
something waving or singing at him, she said with alaugh.
Holcomb said her Christmas decorations take six weeksto set up. Some of the dcor is from her mother andbrings her fond memories of when she was a little girl.
I plan to keep decorating and adding to the displaysas long as my health lets me, she said with a smile. Itmakes me feel like a kid.

Ask when the tree was cut down.Precut treesmay be cut down weeks before theyre sold. So if yourebuying a precut tree, chances are the tree was cut downmuch earlier than you think. This doesnt mean the treewont make it through the holiday season, but a treethat was cut several weeks ago should have some of itsbottom trunk removed before its placed in the stand. This will make it easier for the tree to consume water. This step likely isnt necessary if the tree was cut downthe same day you bring it home.
Have the tree shaken before taking it
home.A tree should be shaken in a shaker before youput it in your car and bring it home. A shaker removesany debris or dead needles from the tree, which can saveyou the trouble of cleaning up all of those dead needlesfrom your living room floor later on.
Have the tree wrapped before taking ithome.A tree should also be wrapped in twine beforetaking it home. The twine should be tight enough tokeep the trees branches from blowing in the wind whenyou attach the tree to the top of your vehicle. If possible,
keep the tree wrapped in twine as you place it in thestand. This makes the tree easier to control.
Choose the right location. When looking for theright place to set up your natural tree, its best to choosea spot thats cool and free of drafts. The tree shouldnot be placed near heat sources, including appliances, fireplaces or vents, because such heat sources createa safety hazard and can make it difficult for the treeto retain moisture. There should also be ample spacebetween the top of the tree and the ceiling.
continued from page 42
Place some covering on the ground beneath thetree.Even a freshly cut natural tree will shed needles overthe course of the holiday season. Before placing the stand inthe location youve chosen, put some type of covering, such asa tree bag, beneath the stand so its easier to gather all thoseneedles once the holiday season has ended.
Remember that natural trees are thirsty.Menand women who have never had a natural Christmas tree in thepast might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get.The stands reservoir should have lots of water, which should
never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom ofthe trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holidayseason. That can be a hassle once the tree has been decorated,so be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once perday to maintain adequate water levels.
