Tintinnabulator
Hello from Arizo-
na. No, Area 5 hasn’t
moved, I’m here to visit
grandchildren. It’s been
a very busy summer: but
I know I’m not telling
you anything you don’t know.
Our National Seminar in
Atlanta was outstand-
ing. We celebrated the
Guild’s 60th birthday
with outstanding con-
certs, and birthday
cake. We had four days
filled with classes taught
by nationally known cli-
nicians, amazing con-
certs, and much more.
Your Area 5 board was
well represented, as
well as many directors
and ringers from Area5
also. If you haven’t at-
tended a National Semi-
nar, think about doing
so next year. Keep
watching the National
website
www.handbellmusicians.
org for information.
By the time you receive
this TNT your Area 5
board will have already
met in Dayton for our
summer board meet-
ing. Final work is being
done on our Area 5 Ed-
ucation Fall Workshops, the Area 5 2015 Youth
Ring, and our 2015
Ring-re-Treats. Plans
are on paper for our
2016 year too. Wow,
talk about making time
fly.
Remember, we have
our Area 5 Education
Fall Workshops coming
up. You should have
received a postcard
with all the important
information. All regis-
tration materials are in
this issue of the TNT.
You can also go online
to download the regis-
tration materials. Now
is the time!
Also, please share infor-
mation about our Area
5 Education Fall Work-
shops with another di-
rector or ringer down
the street or the next
town over.
I love the line from Field of
Dreams….. “if you build it,
they will come” Your Ar-
ea 5 board has built some
awesome events for you
to attend. Looking forward
to seeing you at them.
Ring On,
~Kay Kay French

The fall season seems to
come so quickly every
year. I love the days of
summer with all that
summer brings; but se-
cretly, I have to admit
that I don’t mind the re-turn of fall.
The return to the routine
of weekly rehearsals, pre-
paring the music that I
chose this summer, and
regularly playing for oth-
ers in worship and con-
certs will be nice after a
full summer of continuing
education, planning and a
bit of time to relax.
With this issue I’d like to
say a great big “Thank
you” to Area 5 and the
Board for allowing me to
serve you these past sev-
eral years. It has been a
pleasure to serve Area 5,
to grow and learn togeth-
er with you, and to lead
in this capacity.
This fall I will be going
back to school and am
unable to continue in my
current role with Area 5.
You are in good hands
with our new Communi-
cations Chair, Jennifer
Taylor. Be sure to read
more about her on page
10 and make her feel wel-
come.
I look forward to seeing
you on the other side of
the table at an Area 5
event soon.
Happy fall to you and
happy ringing!

This fall Area 5 will be hosting educational workshops in each of our 5
states. Each site will offer 3 full-day “tracks” designed to provide compre-
hensive training for both ringers and directors. The Beginning Ringers Track
is designed for new or fairly new ringers. The Directors Track is for begin-
ning to intermediate directors who want to improve their skills and learn
new tips and tricks. The Beyond the Basics Track is designed for both ring-
ers and directors who are working toward more advanced skills. In addi-
tion, each workshop will have a repertoire reading session for all partici-
pants.
We hope that you will find a nearby workshop with topics that will be of
benefit to you and your choirs. Be sure to go to the Area 5 website for the
workshop dates and locations and to find more information about the class
topics. Registration forms are also available online.

Fall 2014
Kentucky is a state known for its beautiful bluegrass, horses, bourbon and basketball.
It has the longest cave system in the world and has more miles of running water
than any other state besides Alaska. Kentucky gave the world both Abraham Lincoln
and Jefferson Davis. The world’s largest free swinging bell known as the World Peace
Bell is on permanent display in Newport, Kentucky. The state of Kentucky offers
things for the mind and the spirit.
On the handbell front, Kentucky is bursting with opportunities to grow in mind and
spirit as well.
In this Tintinnabulator, we highlight Central Kentucky’s first annual educational work-
shop in Lexington, KY presented by Asbury University and the Alluring Community
Handbell Ensemble and hosted by Central Christian Church. The event, Branching
Out, hosted close to 110 ringers for a morning of expanding musically as ringers and
directors. From 8:30 – 12:30, clinicians Judith Cummins, Patty Saunders, Mark Schell, Chris Teesdale and Jane Zaluski offered a variety of sessions including everything
from basic techniques and rhythm skills to advanced 4-in-hand ringing and seasonal
sight reading. Classes allowed for ringers of all levels to participate and the event
opened with selections performed by Alluring and Asbury. The next event will be in
the fall of 2015.
This workshop was created to fill the off year of a biennial massed ring hosted by
Asbury University and Dr. Mark Schell currently in its 8th year. Every other year, As-
bury, located in Wilmore, KY, hosts a handbell choir invitational concert and fall
massed ring to bring together central Kentucky choirs. This past year the event in-
cluded Alluring Handbell Ensemble – Lexington, directed by Patty Saunders; Blessings
Handbell Ensemble – Wilmore Free Methodist Church, directed by Katie Diddle;
Centenary UMC Handbell Choir – Lexington, directed by Rob Vanover; Collegium
Musicum Chamber Bells – Asbury University, coached by Dr. Mark Schell; Suzuran
Ringers – Central Kentucky Community, directed by Pam Hiatt; Tintinnabulation
Handbell Ensemble – Wilmore Free Methodist Church, directed by Amanda Bailey;
and Wesley Memorial Handbell Choir – Asbury University, directed by Dr. Mark
Schell. The Saturday of rehearsals concluded with a massed performance finale of
the energetic Bwana Asifiwe! (Praise the Lord!) arranged by Cathy Moklebust.
This year Asbury’s invitational event will take place on Saturday, November 8 and
will include anywhere from 5-10 choirs ranging in years of experience for a Saturday
of fun and instructive ringing. The event highlights the hard work of the choirs with
a closing concert including the massed ring selections as well as individual highlight
pieces from each participating choir for the audience’s pleasure.

Welcome to the Board… Area 5 welcomes Jennifer Taylor to the Board as our Communications Chair and Pub-
lications Editor.
Jennifer Taylor is a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is
certified to teach K-12 vocal, instrumental and general music. Her teaching career in-
cludes school districts in Belgrade, Elgin-Millville, and Redwood Falls, all of which are in
Minnesota. In 1996-1997, Jennifer was the Academic Supervisor/Teacher for Sogang
Language Program in Ilsan, South Korea. From this experience, she became an author
of two English teaching manuals published by Oxford University Press. Jennifer re-
turned to the states and began working in the fall of 2000 at First Presbyterian Church
with Lee Afdahl. Her duties at FPC for the past 14 years included: Alleluia Ringers
and Calvin Choir (grades 2-5), Cherub Choir (ages 4-grade 1), assisting in all handbell
and vocal choirs, directing a flute ensemble, church orchestra, performing on the annu-
al Festival of Music concert series, and so much more.
Her love of handbells began at First Presbyterian Church. Jennifer has attended area
and national events, including being selected last January for the Masters in Conducting
Class with William Payn.
Jennifer is a long time private music instructor, teaching her first lessons at age 14. She
teaches oboe, flute, clarinet, percussion, saxophone and beginning trumpet, trombone,
and piano. Jennifer has had a lot of successful students over the years. Many of them
have been in MN All-State orchestra and band, Rochester Music Guild winners and
recently a student was a featured soloist with the SEMYO orchestra. Jennifer herself
plays the oboe and has been active playing in the Rochester area.
She is excited to be moving to Michigan after she gets married on September 20, 2014.
She and her husband will be living in Marquette, MI where she hopes to join the music
community.
Fall Fundraising Fun!!!
The question has been asked, “How can we afford to go to events when our
church doesn’t have the money to send us?” Well, Ms Marta has a few ideas for
you to think about for the fall. Fundraising ideas are coming in: How about having
a contest within your choir and see who can collect the most change. You better
go check the dryer, laundry money counts.…or how about making a handbell bank
and place it where people can drop off loose change.
Every penny counts. Happy Ringing,
~ Ms. Marta
