We are nearing the Midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

At Beth David, as at any synagogue, we have a spectrum of differing opinions, philosophies, and life

stories that inform the way we vote. What we do have in common, though, is the right to vote, a right that we

should never, never take for granted. When our country was founded in 1776, only white men who owned

property and weren’t Catholics, Jews, or Quakers could vote. It wasn’t until the 1830’s that most states had

dropped religion and property ownership as requirements for voting. Even though in 1870, Congress ratified

the Fifteenth Amendment that guaranteed all non white men the right to vote, many African Americans were

intimidated or forced to pay poll taxes as a way of preventing their vote. And, as many are aware in 1920, the

Nineteenth Amendment was officially ratified, finally giving women the right to vote.

We’ve come a long way as a country towards giving voting rights to all regardless of their gender, color of

their skin, religion, or wealth. Now, every U.S. citizen, without a felony, who is eighteen years or older, is

guaranteed the right to vote. Even though voting is a right, we should treat it like a privilege and act on it as

though it were a mitzvah or obligation. Jews throughout our history, living in Europe, Asia, and Africa,

didn’t have the opportunity to choose their political leaders, affect policy, and influence their governance.

We are so lucky to be living in a country that enables us to vote.

We are encouraging our entire congregation to register to vote and to do so, according to your conscience.

We also want you to be aware of a non-partisan workshop that will be offered here on Sunday, October 7

starting at 9:00 a.m. The League of Women Voters will explain the eleven measures on the November 6th

ballot.

Voting wasn’t always a given in our history, but now that we have the right, let’s do this mitzvah by

casting our vote and participating as privileged citizens of the United States of America.

Voting is important

The following is an excerpt from my Yom Kippur appeal this year. I thank all

of you who generously donated to our Beth David home. You will all receive

recognition in this month's Megillah. For those who would still like to donate,

you will be included in next month's Megillah. Thank you all again, and happy

new year.

Having our place- this place- as the center of our Jewish community is so important, which I believe is

why we are all here today. This summer I had a sobering reminder of how destructive it can be to not

have a sense of place. My family and I travelled through Eastern Europe and toured some of the Jewish

ghettos of Budapest and Krakow. We also went to the Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps. As we

absorbed the enormity of what we were seeing and feeling: the tracks that brought train car after train

car of our people- my relatives, your ancestors- to those camps, the barracks, and the gas chambers, I

couldn't help but think how terrible it must have been to live as a Jew during that time, when so many

Jews had no place in the world. Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first president, best summed up the plight of

our people during that time when he said that "the world was divided into two parts: those places where

Jews could not live and those places where Jews could not go."

Today, we are fortunate to identify ourselves as Jews. Rather than having our identities foisted upon us

by gold stars sewn onto our clothing, we proudly wear our Beth David name tags. Rather than hiding

our services from public eyes for fear of recrimination, we broadcast who we are to all who might be

driving down the 405 freeway. In spite of that, every one of us has still experienced some level of

anti-semitism in our lives- a crude remark here- an offensive assumption there. Certainly, none of that

compares to what Jews under Nazi rule had to endure- the systematic social and economic displacement

through discriminatory legislation, public defamation, social ostracism, and yes, violence. But it

reminds us of how important it is to maintain our Jewish identities for ourselves and for generations to

come.

Whatever your journey through Judaism, or in many instances, to Judaism, looks like, we alone have the

power to help ensure that this place will continue to mean something in the future as well. Just look

around our sanctuary. We have people here from all faiths, from all races, from all orientations. We

embrace. Our doors and our hearts are open to all. This place means something to all of us because we

mean something to one another.

Through your support, we can continue keeping this heart beating, and keep this place the center of our

community for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Eric Schiffer Eric Schiffer, President

Beth David Brotherhood

By Charlie Niederman October 2018

As always September was a busy month for Brotherhood with the High Holidays, and the First Day of School barbe-

que. This year was even busier, since we had to put up and take down the sukkah in September.

First, thanks to everyone who served as an usher during our High Holiday Services, and to Jerrold Korn for organiz-

ing that effort.

The First Day of School Barbeque was fun and there was time to meet our new Religious School Director, Jill Ja-

cobs. Brotherhood prepared and served the food and Sisterhood added an ice cream bar this year. There were about

90 people who enjoyed the food, the event, and Lee Netzer's barbequing skill. To expedite the food service, Elaine

Netzer stepped in to help. David Kalish, Jeff LeBoff, Scott Telford, and Robin Harrison did the set up and take

down. Lee made sure that veggie burgers were added to the hot dog and hamburger menu. For all meals he provides

vegetarian options, and at larger barbeques he serves turkey burgers as a lower fat alternative .

After some minor repairs, we erected the sukkah. It is a very special and large

sukkah, and we follow the very detailed written instructions to get it up and

down, a nearly 3-hour effort and we had female help, Jennifer Kalsih, and

Mulu Skinner Harrison. The photo shows part of the crew that did the work.

Thanks to the entire crew:

From the left David Fisher , Matt Saltzman, Charlie Niederman, Scott Whiteside, Dave Metz, Jennifer and David

Kalish, Steve Loken, Scott Telford, Mulu Skinner Harrison, and Jeff LeBoff. Robin Harrison took the picture and

Joel Berman and Lee Netzer left before we took the photo.

Thanks to Gayle and Ian Chait for the palm fronds, and to Scott Telford, Sable Cantus , and Greg Korduner for

transporting them to the Temple.

The next Brotherhood event will be catering for the Veteran's Synaplex on November 9th.

Charlie Niederman, President

Brotherhood works to support our temple, and to make us better men and better Jews.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!

By Laurie Schneider, Sisterhood President

SISTERHOOD

October 2018

SISTERHOOD MATTERS…

Sisterhood was busy in September. First, we all enjoyed delicious honeycake and apple juice for Rosh

Hashanah and cookies for break fast at the end of Yom Kippur, underwritten by the Reggie Front fund, set

up by Anne Katz and Mulu Harrison. Thank you, Anne and Mulu, for having a nosh ready for us while we

greeted each other at the end of holiday services. Second, Sisterhood joined with Brotherhood for the

barbecue on the first day of school. Thanks to Deb Lelchuk for coordinating and Ai Resnick, Mickey

Lewin, Sue LeBoff, and Mulu Harrison for assisting her with setting up and serving.

October will be even busier! On October 14, at 11:00 AM, we will have a gala fashion show. Clothes from

Chico’s will be modeled by Sisterhood members and a delicious lunch served. This is always a special

event, so don’t miss it!

On October 17, at 7:00 PM, Social Action chair, Thea Telford has arranged a presentation by Water

Underground. This is sure to be very interesting. All are welcome!

To end the month, we will be having our annual Membership Brunch on October 28 at 9:30 AM. This will

be a great opportunity to learn about Sisterhood, catch up with friends, and meet new Sisterhood members

as well. All are welcome and it’s free!

For all of the above events, please check the flyers in the Megillah and Shavuah Tov for more specific

information. It is especially important to RSVP, so those planning can have an accurate count for the

fabulous food to be served.

Hope to see you at our Sisterhood events in October!

Shalom,

Laurie Schneider

While the current US peace proposal for Israelis and Palestinians has yet to be unveiled, we can guess with some certainty that it will be something that the Netanyahu coalition government will like, but will probably be a nonstarter for the Palestinians. After the US terminated its UN funding for the Palestinian refugees, and closed the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Office in Washington it is obvious that the proposal will be met with strong opposition by the Palestinians. Just how this very heavy handed approach will progress will provide plenty to write about in coming months. The religious extremist parties in Israel’s ruling coalition in the last week have begun a campaign that advocates dismantling the Palestinian Authority, annexing all of the West Bank into Israel, doubling the Jewish population there, and paying Palestinians to leave their homes in the West Bank and move to an Arab Country. The Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) strongly opposes the campaign. ARZA supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the only way to assure peace between our two peoples with defined borders, security, mutual recognition of each other’s national sovereignty, and an end to the conflict. ARZA regards the proposal as an insult to the Palestinians because it reduces their attachment to the land of their ancestors and their own national aspirations for sovereignty in the West Bank to a financial incentive. ARZA urges the government of Israel to reject this plan and reaffirm the principle of a two-states for two-peoples resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The proposal is yet another attempt by small minority parties in the ruling coalition to impose their will on Israel. Too bad that it probably will not be resisted by the American administration. There is a military confrontation brewing between Israel, backed by the US, and the Russians who are propping up Asad’s Syrian government. On Sunday the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) continued its intermittent attacks

against rockets and other military aid from Iran passing through Syria and destined for Hezbullah terrorists in Lebanon. The attacks have not been opposed by the Russians, probably based on a communications channel set up by Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Putin. On Sunday as IDF planes were returning to Israel after a successful attack against munitions destined for Hezbullah, Syrian forces launched surface to air missiles. They missed all Israeli air craft but they hit a Russian plane near the returning Israelis. Russia blamed the downing and death of all 15 onboard on Syrian forces. That soon changed after Syrians claimed that Israeli missile counter measures made them unaware that the Russian plane was inbound to a Syrian air base. The Russians now plan to give Syria their sophisticated S-100 air defense system within

two weeks. Prime Minister Netanyahu said

the action would magnify dangers in the

region. US national Security Advisor John

Bolton cautioned that this was a serious escalation and would be a mistake. By the time you get this, it may be old news, but now it is an approaching crisis. Charlie Niederman

Happy Holidays!

I know it is wa-y-y-y too early to be writing about next year’s second day

Rosh Hashanah service at the Huntington Beach Pier, but perhaps some of you will remember

this and will decide to come. It is an experience unlike the beautiful, but more formal first day

services.

Before the Cantors had sung a note, before either Rabbi had spoken a word, we were already

feeling spiritual. The cool ocean breeze wafted over us, the heady ocean scent filled the air, the

waves crashed majestically as we stood or sat and watched them. All involved had been a little

apprehensive as we had been temporarily evicted from our usual shell because of 9/11

programming, but it turned out to be a blessing. Instead of sitting in front of the sold wall of the

shell, and congregants being scattered over a wide seating area, we were all together, choir and

clergy under the inelegant, but wide open easy-ups, and those attending sat in a small arena

which perfectly suited congregational worship.

There, in the glorious sunshine, only yards away from the sand, two congregations came

together to pray, sing, and share a few laughs and tears. When the shofars were blown, the

mournful sound of memories could be heard far from us. At the end, about one hundred people

linked arms and sang together, including a young beach goer who slipped in among us, closed

his eyes and prayed with us, then slipped quietly away.

Even if you never go to second day services, consider going just once, next year….it might

become a new tradition.

Hope you all had a beautiful holiday, Florence Florence Sudakow

Caitlin Greenfield If you know Dr. Seuss, you have met Thing One and Thing Two.

If you have heard the Beth David Choir, you know Choir Co-

President One, Paige Berzak, and now meet Choir Co-President

Two, Caitlin Greenfield!

Caitlin is a California girl, living in the same home her parents had before she was born.

She has an older brother, Ryan, and a younger sister, Sarah. Except for two years at a Montesorri

school, she attended private school through high school. Caitlin graduated from California State

University Fullerton with a major in radio/TV/film, although she started out as a musical theatre major,

but when she could not get a required course, fate stepped in and she took her first radio/TV/film

course and LOVED it! In addition to her course work, Caitlin also became part of the CSF Women’s

Choir her last semester of school.

Being part of the CSF choir gave Caitlin two simultaneous choir experiences. In the women’s choir,

she joined with other groups to sing in many campus concerts. At the same time, Caitlin was and is

singing in the Beth David choir, which she has done since she became a bat mitzvah. She was the

second of our choir ‘babies’….both of whom have definitely grown up!

But alas, graduating college also means…...working! And Caitlin has a very interesting job, although

she admits this may not be her permanent career. If you have ever flown, you have probably been the

recipient of Caitlin’s work. She puts together movie/TV packages that are placed in the entertainment

systems on airplanes, from which we can choose, if we are not sleeping or helping the pilot during the

flight. Personally, I usually help the pilot!

When not singing or working, Caitlin is learning ballet, being a part of local musical theatre, and

learning to play the guitar. The quality she likes best about Temple Beth David is the wonderful

feeling of family. We are so glad she continues to be part of the Beth David family.

Have you Met……………...

a donation to Sisterhood of $45.00 per table, those wishing to acquaint the

community and fellow temple members with their products or skills will have

ble to BETH DAVID SISTERHOOD will assure you of a reservation for

what promises to be a profitable and mutually beneficial endeavor.

To Our Temple Beth David Family:

As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of

services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent

economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to

the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money

on many purchases that you normally make!

We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more

than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then

will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on

the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as

well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some

examples of companies that participate in the program:

Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,

Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,

Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the

Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the

Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at

the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and

the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the

Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for

the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for

charitable organizations with this program.

Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through

Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet

search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will

also add up to real money for the Temple.

We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for

the generations to come.

With best regards,

Neil Kornswiet Eric Schiffer Nancy Meyers
