I was inspired by the beautiful voices of our choir. At points, during the services, I could feel the walls vibrate with sound. I was made comfortable and felt joined in leading the congregation with Turia on the bima. She is an important colleague for me and I know a highly valued leader of the congregation. We are truly blessed. So too are we fortunate to have Clare Weil to guide us into Kol Nidre through the voice of her violin, and, too as part of our Yom Kippur children’s services. My thanks go out to the Sisterhood for arranging for the exquisite bima and social hall flowers, and the baking and providing for the delicious Rosh HaShanah onegs and Yom Kippur break-fast. Yum yum. (It was worth the fast!) A special thank you to Gina and Marlon for all their preparatory and day of labor. They allow our holiday worship and festivities to go off without a hitch. Thank you also to all those who participated in this year’s services. I was glad to share the leading of the services with so many of you. The High Holy Days are often referred to as the “Super Bowl of the Jewish year.” While they may be climatic, they, nonetheless, are not the entirety of our worship or study. As we move away from the grandeur of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we begin the fullness of the congregational year. I am in the midst, of a full-force ordering, shelving and filing project. Within the month I will determine an adult education curriculum. I imagine it will include two, six sessions long, modules. I am interested, too, in beginning an adult study group leading to bar/bat mitzvah. I am curious if any one is interested in this? Finally, I am looking for volunteers to help build, plant, and tend a mitzvah garden in our back lot. This project is the beginning of what I hope to be a congregational exploration of poverty in our community and how we might respond to it. Dear Friends,

I enjoyed sharing the High Holy Day services with you. I was inspired by the beautiful voices of our choir. At points, during the services, I could feel the walls vibrate with sound. I was made comfortable and felt joined in

leading the congregation with Turia on the bima. The High Holy Days are often referred to as the “Super Bowl of the Jewish year.” While they may be climatic, they, nonetheless, are not the entirety of our worship or

study.

As our tradition teaches: “We are all responsible for one another.”

By the time you read this message, we will have just completed our High Holiday Services and started into the New Year, 5779. I hope that this year will be a happy, sweet, and healthy one for you and yours.

Please join me in thanking our spiritual leaders, Rabbi Looper and Turia Stark Williams, as well as Becky Taylor and the choir, for providing us with a well-executed High Holiday service experience. While on the topic of services, please provide temple leadership or Rabbi Looper with your feedback on the High Holiday services. Were they meaningful to you? Is the format suitable? Was there a moment or prayer that impacted you? We welcome helpful suggestions from our membership to improve our approach moving forward. I have my own suggestion regarding mobile telecommunication devices in the sanctuary which I intend to discuss with temple leadership, and hope to develop a mobile device policy that we can all abide by. The sanctuary is a sacred space which should be free of audible distractions commonly caused by mobile devices.

I appreciate those of you who donated to our Social Justice Fund over the High Holidays to benefit the community programs we selected to assist. Please also note that Temple Beth Or donated $500 to BTW Magnet School to assist with the impact caused by the recent devastation to one of their school buildings. It is critically important for us to consistently support local programs both with our dollars as well as with our time. Many local charities are experiencing a challenge with fundraising, while at the same time losing funding from state and local government, so anything we can do is helpful.

Many of you may have noted our recent parking lot upgrades and repairs, which will serve us well over the years to come. The funding for this project came from the Sabel Family Trust Fund. The Board of Trustees is considering other improvements and enhancements to our facility to provide our members with the best possible experience when they attend a function at Temple Beth Or.

In closing, I wanted to bring to your attention an item I noticed during the High Holidays regarding our “Trees of Life.” While these Trees not only provide artistic beauty to our foyer, they also serve to exhibit memorials, honorariums, special anniversaries, and birthdays of our members. This project was started over 20 years ago, but fewer than 50% of our special leaves have been utilized to date. It is never too late to purchase a Leaf to commemorate a special time or event in your life. If you are interested, please contact Gina for more information.

Dear Friends,

It is the custom at Beth Or to say a prayer for those in need of healing during Shabbat services. Our practice is to go around the room and invite attendees to speak the names of friends or relatives. I would like to extend the prayer to those who do not have representation at services. If you are unable to attend services but wish to have the name of a loved one mentioned, please call Gina at the office by Thursday afternoon. We will keep names on our list for two weeks at a time.

B’vracha – with blessing, Rabbi Looper

To honor the sanctity of Shabbat and show respect for the service and fellow congregants, all worshipers should turn off their electronic devices before entering the sanctuary.

SISTERHOOD

Happy New Year to all of you! Sisterhood has been very busy in September!

Thank you to Corinne Capilouto for the beautiful Rosh Hashanah reception. Everyone enjoyed the food as well as the camaraderie. The apples and honey the following day were a treat that were provided by Joy Kaplan.

Yom Kippur Break Fast was a lovely event thanks to Susan Finklestein. Members and non-members were overwhelmed by the delicious and pretty start to the New Year.

The next thing on sisterhood’s calendar was Sukkot, chaired by Celia Dubin. Celia and Alison Williamson ensured it was a special time under the Sukkah.

After Sukkot, Marlene Beringer and Betty Goldberg supplied us with wonderful food for the Simchat Torah Service.

Please plan to attend sisterhood’s Opening Meeting, hosted by Carol Loeb, on October 11. This is a great opportunity to hear what sisterhood has planned for the year.

The Cheesecake Fundraiser is going on now; don’t forget to order yours! The cheesecakes are YUMMY and make

great gifts! Call Marlene Beringer at 399-6868, or Lisa Weil at 324-9000.

Many thanks to Karen Nyman for finding candle lighters during August, September and October. Robin Blitz will be tasked with this job in November, December and January. Please say “yes” when called

Welcome to Lisa Shapiro, Sisterhood’s newest member.

Thank you to Rabbi Looper for the meaningful Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services,

Thank you for supporting Sisterhood,

Mae Cohen Sisterhood President

After the tour, we will have lunch at a local restaurant, at individual's expense. RESERVATION DEADLINE IS OCT. 11, necessary for carpools and dining. We will carpool from TBO at 9:00 a.m.

that morning.

Our annual Thanksgiving/Bingo event that we offer to the senior residents of Capitol Heights Senior Home is coming up soon. We will need door prizes, homemade cakes or pies, and cash donations to purchase the Bingo prizes. The date will be announced soon. Please consider volunteering that day to help serve and call Bingo.

L'chaim League offers many friendly and fun activities for our community members. We hope to see you soon at any or all of our events.

Annual Joint Thanksgiving Service Church of the Ascension

First United Methodist Church Temple Beth Or

Sunday, November 18 4 PM

This year’s Thanksgiving service will be held at First United Methodist Church.

Church of the Ascension’s Rector, Candice B. Frazer will speak. A reception follows the service.

Cell phone etiquette: Always turn off (or silence) your cell phone before entering the sanctuary/chapel and refrain from using it – for talking, texting, or taking photos. It is not appropriate to use a cell phone during worship services because it distracts from the kavanah (spiritual intentions) necessary for prayer and destroys the holiness that is present.

Guidelines Dear Friends,

Please mark your calendar for the 2019 annual Food Festival for Sunday, February 24th. We hope that everyone will participate for the 2019 event. This is a Temple event and requires the help of every member either physically or financially.

February 24th seems like a long way off but Food Festival preparations are just around the corner. Soon the baking committees will begin scheduling their cooking dates. A lot of these dates occur during the morning hours and on various days of the week. We are asking that everybody please contribute some time on these dates. We simply cannot continue this task without the help of all members who are physically able to work in the kitchen. Cooking skills are not required as there are other duties to be performed as well. The dates and committee chair name will be published in the monthly bulletin, the Friday night flyer, and listed on the website.

The Treasure and Collectible Market is accepting items. Please take the time now to check your storage area, attic and closets for “gently loved” treasures that we might sell. You may drop off at the Temple any Tuesday – Friday. Marlon will gladly help you unload at the Temple. We do

not accept large TV’s or large computers or old and outdated stereo equipment.

Please contact me at 546-2521 or email [email protected] or Karen Goldstein at 265-1145 or [email protected] to volunteer. If you have never been a chair of one of the committees, now is the time to join this group of volunteers that continues to give so much of their time to help make our Food Festival successful. Please call me at 334-546-2521 or email me at [email protected].

Looking forward to a great event!

NEED HELP GETTING AROUND DURING SERVICES?

A wheelchair and walker are stored in the coat closet and are available to members

and guests during Temple events.

We would like to know. Please call the temple office when a family member is in the hospital or ailing. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. Please let the

temple know if there is a concern in your family or another congregation family (with their permission). We need your help in order to offer ours.

BEDTIME BUNDLES For the 11th year we will be collecting bedtime items for Child Protect during November and December. Please put your purchases which must be new and unused in the playpen in the Temple lobby beginning in early November.

After coming to Child Protect because they were abused or molested, these boys and girls go into foster care, often with nothing to call their own, according to Director Jannah Bailey. Please be generous for these unfortunate children, who are mostly ages 6-12.

Items wanted are pajamas, pillow cases, socks, underwear, bedtime stories, journals and writing implements, sketchbooks and coloring pencils or crayons, toothpaste and toothbrushes, washcloths, fleece throws, slippers, dolls and toys, combs/brushes/hair ornaments, and anything else you can think of.

If you don't want to shop or are unable to do so, please send a check to the temple office earmarked "for bedtime bundles" and we will be glad to shop for you! Thank you!
