The Dolphins, owners of a 7-7 record, have won four consecutive games under first-year head coach Nick Saban. Kickoff at Dolphins Stadium (capacity 75,192) is scheduled for noon (CST). The Titans played their final home game of 2005 last week and narrowly fell to the NFC’s top ranked Seattle Seahawks 24-20. After facing an early 14-0 defecit, the Titans tem- porarily took the lead with 24 consecutive points, led by quarterback Steve McNair’s 310 passing yards and two touchdowns to wide receiver Drew Bennett . It was McNair’s 11th career 300-yard game, and his total put him over 3,000 passing yards for the fifth season in his career. With 261 passing yards this week, he would set a new career single-season high. Tight end Ben Troupe had a career-best 116 yards on six receptions in the game. Combined with Bo Scaife’s two receptions, the Titans tight ends as a group have 134 recep- tions this season ( Erron Kinney -- 54, Troupe -- 46, Scaife -- 32, Gregg Guenther -- 2), ranking third in NFL history behind the 1984 San Diego Chargers (163) and the 1983 Chargers (144). Led by first-year head coach Nick Saban , who coached defensive backs for the Oilers from 1988-89, the Dolphins have not lost in more than a month, beating the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and, most recently, the New York Jets. The Dolphins began play in 1966 as the American Football League’s first expan- sion franchise. They played the Oilers twice a year from 1966-69, with the Oilers winning five of eight games before 1970. Since that time, they have played each other less frequent- ly, meeting 21 times over 35 years. The Dolphins lead the all-time series 15-14. The teams have met in the postseason just once. In 1978, the Oilers defeated the Dolphins 17-9 at the Orange Bowl for Houston’s first playoff win since 1961. Earlier in the 1978 season, the Oilers and Dolphins were featured in a memorable Monday Night game, a 35-30 Oilers win that included four rushing touchdowns by Earl Campbell. A win this week would give the Titans their third consecutive victory in three sea- sons over Miami after the Dolphins won five straight games from 1992-01. In a game played under unusual circum-stances, the Titans prevailed 17-7 over the MiamiDolphins in the 2004 season opener.

With Hurricane Ivan advancing toward SouthFlorida, the game was moved from a Sunday kick-off to Saturday due to the expected landfall onMonday.

Nevertheless, an announced crowd of69,987 watched the Titans defense control most ofthe game and intercept a total of three passes, including one returned for a touchdown by safetyLamont Thompson.

The Titans also overcame an unusual situa-tion in their special teams corps. Just a few daysafter kicker Joe Nedney suffered a season-endinginjury, his replacement, Aaron Elling, was forcedto handle both kicking and punting duties becauseof punter Craig Hentrich’s last-minute back prob-lems. Elling responded by making one of two fieldgoal attempts and both extra point attempts. Healso averaged 45.3 yards on six punts.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Titansjumped on the board in the second quarter after a52-yard run by running back Chris Brown set up

a one-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Steve McNair to tight end Erron Kinney. Inhis first NFL start, Brown recorded 100 yards on 16 carries before leaving the game at theend of the first half with a sprained ankle.

The score remained 7-0 until late in the third quarter. A 58-yard punt by Ellinggave Miami poor field position. Then, on a third-and-eight from the Miami 29-yard line, ablitzing Keith Bulluck caused an errant pass by Miami A.J. Feeley, who had opened thesecond half at quarterback in relief of starter Jay Fiedler. Feeley’s pass was interceptedby Thompson, who raced 37 yards to the end zone.

Elling added a fourth quarter field goal to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive that usedover eight minutes of the game clock. On the following drive, the Dolphins drove 83 yardsfor a 15-yard touchdown pass from Feeley to tight end Randy McMichael, but they failedto gain possession of the ensuing on-side kick. Each team still had one more possession, but the score remained 17-7, giving the Titans their third-consecutive win in season open-ers.

The Tennessee Titans erased an early 14-point deficit, scoring 24 unansweredpoints, but the NFC-leading Seattle Seahawks responded with two consecutive touchdownsin the second half to hand the Titans their 10th loss of the season. The Titans fell to 4-10,while the Seahawks improved to 12-2 and clinched a first-round playoff bye.

Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck provided the game-winning score with atwo-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Jackson with 8:59 to play in the fourth quarter. Thetouchdown capped a 13-play, 93-yard drive that began when the Seattle defense stoppedthe Titans on a fourth-and-one from the Seattle six-yard line, a play in which running backChris Brown was dropped for a one-yard loss.

The Titans had one more opportunity to go ahead in the fourth quarter, but theirdrive was thwarted again on a fourth-and-two incompletion at the Seahawks’ 34-yard linewith 5:08 to play.

The Seahawks jumped out to a quick lead, scoring on a 22-yard pass fromHasselbeck to tight end Jerramy Stevens and on a one-yard touchdown run by ShaunAlexander in their initial two offensive series. Alexander had 91 yards on 11 carries in thefirst quarter. He finished the game with 172 yards on 26 attempts.

Early in the second quarter, a 36-yard field goal attempt by Seahawks kickerJosh Brown was blocked by Antwan Odom. The Titans offense then drove 84 yards on12 plays, scoring on a three-yard run by Jarrett Payton.

The Titans regained possession with 2:18 to go in the half. Helped by recep-tions of 16 and 14 yards by tight end Ben Troupe, an 11-yard run by quarterback SteveMcNair and a 15-yard penalty on the Seahawks, the Titans faced a first-and-goal at thefour-yard line with eight seconds to play in the half. McNair then found Drew Bennett inthe front of the end zone for a touchdown, tying the game at 14-14.

The Titans maintained their momentum early in the second half. After gains of29 and 16 yards from McNair to Troupe, the quarterback then found Bennett again in theend zone for a 14-yard touchdown, finishing a nine-play, 78-yard drive. McNair totaled 310yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-38 passing in the game. Bennett led the squad witheight receptions for 93 yards, while Troupe recorded a career-best 116 yards on six recep-tions.

It was not enough, however, as Rob Bironas’ field goal was answered with athree-play drive by the Seahawks that resulted in a four-yard Joe Jurevicius touchdownreception and later the game-winning strike from Hasselbeck to Jackson.

CB PACMAN JONES

Pacman Jones currently ranks first in the NFL in punt returns and seventhamong all kickoff returners.

In the last 20 seasons (since 1986), only one rookie has finished in the league’stop five in both kickoff returns and punt returns -- New Orleans’ Tyrone Hughes in 1993.

Should Jones finish in the top five in both kickoff and punt returns, he wouldbecome the 11th player to do so in the last 20 seasons. Of the previous 10 players, all butone was selected to the Pro Bowl in that season. (In 1990, Detroit’s Mel Gray and theGiants’ David Meggett both accomplished the feat. Gray received the one NFC Pro Bowlnomination for returners.) Most recently, Detroit’s Eddie Drummond finished second inkickoff returns and first in punt returns in 2004.

The last time a member of the Titans finished in the top five in both categorieswas the 2000 season, when Derrick Mason was second in kickoff returns and fifth in puntreturns.
