StPeterClaverwasborninVerduinSpainintheyear1580.AsStPeterClavergrew,hediscoveredthathewascalledtobeapriestandjoinedagroupofpriestscalledtheJesuits.DuringhisstudieshefeltcalledtogototheWestIndiesandpreachtheGospel.EventuallyhewassenttoSouthAmericaandwasordainedapriestinamajorportcitycalledCartegenain(whatisnow)Colombia.
Thejourneyacrosstheoceanlastedmanyweeksandwouldhavebeenhardanduncomfortable.StPeterfeltstronglythathewascalledtomakethejourneyandwouldhavebeenhappytoundergothehardships.
Cartagenawasoneoftheworld’smajorportsforthetransportationofslaves.AtthattimethousandsofpeoplewerebeingtakenfromtheirhomesinWestAfricaandtransportedtovariouspartsoftheAmericastobesoldandmadetoworkinslavery.Itwasinhumaneandtheslavesweretransportedinterribleconditions.Aroundathirdofthemdied onthejourney.TheywouldarriveinCartegenascared,hungry,thirsty andoftensick.
PeterClaverhadadesiretoservetheslavesastheyarrivedatCartagenaandexcelledintheloveandcareheshowedtoslaves.Hewouldgodownintothestinkingslaveshipsandhelpthem.Hetookonboardfoodanddrinkwhichhehadbeggedfrompeopletogivetotheslavesandhedressedtheirwoundsandastheywereinaterribleconditionthiswasaveryunpleasanttask.HewaskeenalsotosharethegoodnewsofGod’slovebutsaidthat“Wemustspeaktothemwithourhands,beforewetrytospeaktothemwithourlips.”WhenhehaddressedtheirwoundsandtakencareoftheirbasicneedshewouldusepicturesandinterpreterstointroducethemtoaGodwholovedthemandwasoutragedatwhatmanwasdoingtothem.
PeterClavernursedandbaptisedover300,000slavesduringhislife.Healsovisitedthemattheplantations,supportingthemandurgingtheslaveownerstotreatthemwell.Hewashappytobeknownasthe‘SlaveofSlaves’andhadpromisedtobesowhenhewasfirstordained.
