Those who are about to prepare a Master of Laws

dissertation should keep in mind the following

points:

First, be specific about the topic of your thesis.

If what you would like to argue in your thesis

remains ambiguous and unclear, it will be diffi-

cult for the Evaluation Committee to identify

what your thesis is all about and evaluate it prop-

erly.

Second, review all relevant previous academic

research to the fullest extent possible. This will

prevent you from accidentally re-conducting re-

search which has already been published and/or

missing discussion of important academic tradi-

tions/viewpoints.

Third, make sure that you highlight the unique

contribution(s) your study made to previous

research on that topic. If the conclusion of your

thesis adds nothing new to those already reached

by past research, your thesis will lose much of its

academic significance.

Timeline (general)Timeline (general)

You must submit an outline of the dissertation

and first draft to Academic Affairs Office

At least one month prior to your final exami-

nation, submit a final draft to Academic Af-

fairs Office and Committee.

The final draft should be complete in all

respects (title page to last page of references)

and editorially acceptable for final approval.

PlagiarismPlagiarism is the use of another’s ideas

without giving proper credit or the use of

another’s phraseology without:

(1) enclosing it in quotation marks, or

(2) blocking it by indenting and single spacing.

Plagiarism also includes simple mechanical

modification of another’s writing; for example,

replacing a word or dropping or interpolating

words here and there, but retaining the essence

of the other person’s work without acknowl-

edgement. The penalty for plagiarism could be

dismissal from the TLBU .

General GuideGeneral Guide

The TLBU Graduate School of Law in Seoul,

strongly recommends that you follow the standard

citation format of Bluebook rules with used by a

major law journals. All students must use Bluebook

style, 18th ed. or newer, for legal citations.

These are selected examples of the application of

Bluebook rules. Guide can not cover all possible

iterations of the rules. So study on the Bluebook and

when in doubt, you can ask your supervising Profes-

sor.)

CheckCheck

■ Confirm that the preferred source has been used for the

type of authority cited.

■ Verify that the proper typeface, abbreviations, capitali-

zation, and short citation forms (if applicable) have been

used for each type of authority.

■ Verify that id., supra, infra and hereinafter are used

correctly.

■ Locate the source to verify that the appropriate signal

has been used to indicate how an authority relates to the

proposition being made. For assistance with locating

sources, see the Tech Check Research Guide.

■ Include page numbers and pinpoint citations to the

exact location within the authority that relates to the

proposition made in the text of the law journal note or

article.

Although I am indebted to more people than I can take the space to

thank here, I must acknowledge my gratitude to a limited number of indi-

viduals who have made remarkable contributions to this dissertation. I

must begin by thanking my advisor, LYOU Byung Hwa for his ongoing

invaluable support and assistance in the development of this study. While

I was writing this dissertation, he respected and nourished my ideas, and

established a basis for doing my own research in the future. Before I be-

came a dissertation, he taught me how to express and construct my own

ideas in papers and examinations. Without his continuous encouragement,

it would have been impossible for this crude student to finish a Master of

Law program and write this dissertation.

In addition, I acknowledge the helpful advice, insightful comments,
