C H A P T E R 1I N T R O D U C T I O N

SECTION I. GENERAL INFORMATION1-1. SCOPE.

a. Type of Manual. Instructions in this manualexplain how to use the M295 Kit to decon-taminate individual equipment.

b. Model Number and Equipment Name. The officialnomenclature is Decontamination Kit. IndividualEquipment: M295. The NSN is 6850-01-357.8456, which identifies a box containing 20 kits.

c. Purpose of Equipment. The M295 Kit allowsyou to decontaminate your individual equipmentthrough physical removal and absorption ofchemical agent with no long term harmful Decontamination Kit.

1-2. MAINTENANCE FORMS AND PROCEDURES. Department of the Armyforms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be those prescribedby DA Pam 738-750 as contained in the Maintenance Management Update.

1-3. REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS (EIRS). Ifyour M295 Kit needs Improvement. let us know. Send us an EIR. You, the user.are the only one who can tell us what you don’t like about your equipment. Letus know why you don’t like the design or performance. Put it on an SF 368(Quality Deficiency Report). Mail it to us at Commander, U.S. Army Armament,Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD (R), Rock Island. IL61299-6000. We will send you a reply.

1-5. CORROSION DATA FEEDBACK. Corrosion Prevention and Control(CPC) of Army Materiel is a growing concern. It is important that anycorrosion problems with thus item be reported so that the problem can becorrected and improvements can be made to prevent the problem in futureitems.

N O T E : Use of key words such as "corrosion", "rust", "deterioration", or"cracking" will assure that the information is identified as a CPC problem.

a. Definition. While corrosion is typically associated with rusting ofmetals, it can also Include deterioration of other materials such asrubber and plastic. Unusual cracking, softening, swelling, or breakingof these materials may be a corrosion problem.

b. Reporting. Such problems should be reported using SF 368 (QualityDeficiency Report). Send the form to Commander, U.S. ArmyArmament, Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-QAD(R), Rock Island, IL 61299-6000.

1-6 EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES AND FEATURES

a. Contents. Each M295 Kit consists of a carrying pouch containing fourindividual decon packets, enough to do two complete individual equipmentdecontaminations. Each packet contains a decon mitt filled with deconpowder.

b . Accountability. M295 Kit is expendable. Discard carrying pouch afterpackets are all used.

c. Storage. M295 can be stored over a wide range of temperatures fromsevere cold to hot: -60 deg. F (-51 deg. C) to 160 deg. F (71 deg. C).

2-1. GENERAL. Always keep in mind the WARNINGS, CAUTIONS. and NOTESDo the inspection procedure to ensure M295 Kit is ready for use.

2-2. INSPECTION PROCEDURE.

a. Inspect kit for loose black decon powder. If no powder is detected, kit is missionready.

b. If powder is detected, inspect each packet for leaks.

c. Discard all leaking packets.

d. Reinsert good packets into carrying pouch.

NOTE

If there are fewer than four decon packets in the carrying pouch.request an additional kit.

M295 Kit can be stored in one of the battle dress overgarment(BDO) trouser pockets.

d. Discard empty packet. e. Untold decon mitt.

NOTE: The followingillustrations are for aright-handed person.

f. Grasp green (non-pad) side of decon mitt with hand you don’t writewith. Pat the other gloved hand with decon mitt to start the flow ofdecon powder onto glove. Then rub glove with decon mitt untilcompletely covered with decon powder.

g. Insert the decontaminated gloved hand inside the decon mitt. Make surethe pad side is in the palm of the hand and the thumb sticks through theappropriate thumbhole. Tighten the wristband on the gloved handsecurely.

h. Decontaminate individual equipment by rubbing with pad side of decon

mitt until thoroughly covered with decon powder. Pay special attention toareas which are hard to get into (for example, cracks, crevises, and absor-bent materials).

(1) Decontaminate other protectiveglove.

(2) Decontaminate exposed areasof mask and hood.

(3) Decontaminate weapon.

(4) Decontaminate helmet bypatting it with decon mitt.

j . Get another packet and repeat steps a through g. Then perform thefo l lowing:

(1) Decontaminate load carry ing equipment (LCE) and accessor ies(canteen, ammo pouch, f i rst a id pouch, etc.) .

(2) Decontaminate mask carry ing case

(3 ) Decon tam ina te p ro tec t i ve boo t s .

(4) Repeat decontaminat ion of protect ive gloves

k. Discard decon mit t .

l . I f l iquid contaminat ion is st i l l suspected or detected, get another packetand repeat steps a through g. Rub or blot areas where contaminat ion isst i l l suspected or detected.

WARNING

M295 Kit only removes the liquid hazard. Decontaminated itemsmay still present a vapor hazard. Don’t unmask until it's beendetermined safe to do so.

NOTE

Dispose of expended materials in accordance with local StandardOperating Procedure.

Decon powder is not harmful to equipment. Clean equipment whenconditions permit.
