+ To assist Mrs Darvill, this week’s welcome is from Mrs Wilson. Well, we are certainly into the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness …” that John Keats described in his poem “To Autumn” now. The weather has not deterred us and I noticed when passing through the Form I garden that Junior House girls were enjoying lively dance lessons with Mr Colomer to warm them up! This week, I have been delighted with the success of the online parent meetings. It is always good to talk and this format was easy to access and use. Apologies if there were glitches, and if anyone missed their slot, please email any particular questions that you have to the individual teacher. Also this week, the girls were shown moving videos in their classroom Assembly about Remembrance Sunday and I hope that they now understand why this is such an important occasion on which to show respect. Poppies and other accessories are being sold in each classroom from Monday - further information has been sent in a ParentMail today. There is also further information about our Children in Need charity day next Friday. Spots to be worn in any form, but please remember to wear school or substantial coats and school shoes. If your daughter is doing PE that day, please ensure that they are wearing trainers. We a planning to launch a new page on our website which will host testimonials regarding Seaton House. If you would like to write a few words about the school then please would you forward them to Mrs Saunders using [email protected]. We have been delighted to receive some lovely (and encouraging) comments from parents over the last few months and we are most grateful for those. Thank you. Finally, I would like to wish all our Form VI girls that are sitting the Sutton S.E.T. 11+ examination and other Independent school examinations next week, the very best of luck. You have all worked hard and deserve to do well. Have faith, exam season will soon be over! Mrs Wilson

To assist Mrs Darvill, this week’s welcome is from Mrs Wilson.

This week, the children in Reception have been thinking about fireworks in the lead up to Bonfire Night. We thought of different adjectives to describe the noises made by fireworks, used chalk to draw some beautiful firework pictures and we have also thought about ways we can stay safe when watching a bonfire or fireworks. As part of our story focus on 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark', the girls also thought about some of the things they are afraid of. We then practised making scared faces and then talked about how we can make ourselves feel better.

In Nursery, the children have been learning about the artist Jackson Pollack and have been making their own by splatter painting. They had lots of fun

This week FI have been very creative. They painted fireworks using lovely bright colours. The girls also painted poppies and found out about what happens on Remembrance Sunday. They really enjoyed participating in an online Divali workshop today, learning a huge amount in a fun, interactive way.

In Form II Art we have been learning about colour mixing,

shades, hues and tones. We also talked about cold and warm

colours and when they might be used. The girls created their own

colour wheels. We also introduced our artwork focus for

this half term. The girls were thrilled to see the return of

Hundertwasser, the artwork is called 'landscapes'.

An Autumn piece of artwork by Ayra A FII.

Form I have started to read their focus story for this half term, 'How to Hunt for Gold' by Vivianne Schwarz. This week the girls talked about going on a quest, where they would go and what they would do. We also found out lots of facts about crocodiles and the girls wrote some fantastic descriptions of crocodiles. We learnt that salt water crocodiles can be 7 meters long! The girls were amazed when we used meter sticks to see just how long that is.

FII girls were so excited to see that their classroom had been decorated during half-term and a fabulous new interactive screen had been installed. A big thank you to Mr Kennedy and Mr Kelly for all their hard work. The girls now have a wonderful, bright space to work in. Also thank you Mr Roads for the new radiator

As it is Anti-Bullying Week, Form III have been discussing how to recognise bullying behaviour and what they should do if they are worried that they or their friends are being bullied. We investigated lots of different scenarios and discussed what would be the best way to deal with them. We all agreed that the most important thing is to talk to an adult if you are upset about something so that they can help you. We also realised the importance of being kind to each other.

Jessica FIII impressed us all with her fabulous holiday news. Form III had been learning about Ancient Egypt and Jessica and her family went to the British Museum to view the Egyptian display. She was so inspired that she created her own Egyptian tomb which she brought into school for us all to see. Amazing. Well done Jessica.

FIII are learning all about magnets in Science this half term. This week they had lots of fun exploring different shapes and sizes of magnets and seeing if they attract or repel. They recorded their findings carefully using the correct scientific language.

Shreya FIV was selected to film a segment for a new children’s art show called Makeaway Takeaway which will air on CITV sometime next year. She filmed the segment during half term (all socially distanced etc!) in a house that had been converted to a studio and it was a great experience and opportunity to see how a show is filmed and what goes into making it behind the scenes. Lots of repetition for the different camera angles so a bit boring at times but a fun experience overall nonetheless. Here are a few photos from the day.

Form IV are learning about electricity in Science this half term. They have had a lot of fun making circuits with bulbs, buzzers and motors.

Catherine (FV) now uses an organ to practise at home. She was a finalist in the ISA's Young Musician Competition last year playing the violin and has prepared a piano piece for this year's competition. She started playing the organ last year and also plays a Chinese instrument called a Guzheng or zither.

Hannah FVI is preparing an art portfolio for her entrance interview for senior schools, and she has selected this wonderful picture as her favourite piece. She has named it The Collaboration Tiger. The top section on the right is created in watercolour and she had to work using dots trying to represent the hairs. The top left section is a realistic view in acrylic paint. On the bottom she has used pastels and charcoal. Hannah drew several pictures of a tiger but they were not good enough and she learnt how to master drawing a tiger by practising it many times. As they say, ‘practice makes perfect’. All the pieces were exceptional but I am sure you will agree this is outstanding.

The other piece of art was selected by Mrs Wilson as her favourite. It is a pencil drawing and is called Stacking Stones.

This month, all girls in Forms IV, V and VI will be participating in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge 2020 in their computing lessons. The Bebras challenges are a set of short problems called Bebras tasks that are delivered online. The tasks are fun, engaging and based on the types of problems that Computer Scientists enjoy solving. The challenges can be solved without prior knowledge but instead require logical thinking. The girls have enjoyed having a go at some practise challenges in class this week. The emphasis is very much on participation but there is also the chance to gain Merit, Distinction and the Best in School.

Young Minds ‘Hello Yellow’

A huge thank you to parents and children for their fantastic fundraising support for the Young Minds charity. The children enjoyed dressing in yellow and taking part in some mindfulness activities in their classes. Nursery, Reception, Form 1 and 2 also took part in a sponsored event to raise more money. The children had a great time completing physical challenges.

We raised a grand total of £1,193 which is amazing!

Children in Need

Next week we will be taking part in the Children in Need national fundraising event on Friday. The children can wear Mufti which should include something spotty in return for a donation of £1 for the charity.

NSPCC

In December we hope to have a Christmas Sparkly Jumper Day to raise money for the NSPCC.

I am sure you will agree that now more than every it is important that we support those in need.

Thank you once again for your continued support and enthusiasm.

• Poppies being sold in classes next week. • Children in Need Friday 13th November. • Make sure you have your waterproofs for P.E. • Please take care when parking, do not park over driveways, the wrong side of the

road and never drive down the lane to the LRC when dropping-off or collecting children, as this is very dangerous.

• As much as possible, please try and ensure your child arrives punctually in the morning.
