BROTHER LYCARION(1870-1909)

This Brother was born in Switzerland

and killed in Barcelona on the 27th July 1909,

the first day of “the tragic week of Barcelona”.

The positio is ended and will be joined

to the group of Brother Eusebio.

He was an admirable and hard-working teacher who took very much at heart the good of his pupils.He prepared his lessons with great care.His lessons were clear and very interesting.He applied himself even morefor his Saturday Marial instructions.He excelled in his social relationships so that at the end of the first year he had gained the confidence of everybody because of his hard work and kindness.The people of his area called him “the holy Brother’’.

with their executors:

Brother Aquilino spoke to their leader:“I want to speak to you.”And the leader:“Speak, while we fire our guns!”Although the militants were not paying attention to him, he said to them:“As a man I pardon you, as a Catholic I thank youbecause you put between my hands the palm of martyrdom.”“Are you finished?” the leader asked him.Brother Aquilino answered,“Long live Christ the King!”“Very well! Turn your back, now!” the leader of the militants told him.“I will face you!” replied the Brother.And the militants fired upon the four Brothers.

To many of the Brothers often it was said: “If you renounce Christ, you are free!”

With this group we often find ourselves facing violent executions where the victims have no rights.It’s the expeditious style of the F.A.I.(Fuerzas Anarquicas Ibéricas)who do not want people who rot in prison.The militants frequently burst in on the boarding houses, drawing up lists of persons.For many that meant “el paseito,” the final small walk,often during the night, in a lonely place, for an anonymous martyrdom, with, at times, accidental witnesses.Nothing spectacular.

Brother Virgilio was a friend of joy who found it easy to joke: “He was a companionin whom you found courageand with whom you were ableto forget the troubles of the day,and renew your energyfor the following day.In times of tension,he was onewho found joyto eliminate the tension.”
