Proofreading Mark: Italicize

Make sure you italicize the title of the book. Do not use quotation marks. Italics are used to punctuation long pieces of literature (i.e. - novel, movie title, album name, etc.). Quotation marks are used to punctuate short pieces (i.e. - song title, poem, etc.)

Proofreading Mark: Swoosh mark

Remember this is an informational essay that explains. There is no room for your opinion. Please do not use 1st person or say “I believe” or “I think.” Just explain what the evidence shows.

The swoosh mark means “delete.”

Proofreading Marks: Swoosh mark

The swoosh mark might make you delete many words and replace it with only one or two words. That’s okay. The sentence will make more sense.

Proofreading Marks: Hashtag & SP marks

The SP mark means there is a spelling error.

The hashtag mark means that you need to add a space where the line separates.

Proofreading Marks: SP mark

Really? Really?! Don’t be careless! When you read your essay, please try to find all of your spelling mistakes for yourself.

Proofreading Marks: VT mark (Verb Tense)The VT mark means the verb tense is wrong. Essays sound better when they are written in present tense.

Page 11: To Kill a Mockingbird - sausd.us

Proofreading Marks: VT, SP, WC marks

The WC mark means the word choice is wrong. You need to choose a new, better word. I usually provide the suggestion above.

Notice the spelling error. When you mention a number between 1-9, it customary to write out the word instead of use the number itself.

Proofreading Marks: WC mark

Another thing about word choice. Sometimes, I will replace your words with a whole new phrase.

Proofreading Marks: Carrot symbol

The ˅ symbol is called a carrot. When you see this ˅ symbol, you will want to add the words I provided in the space that the carrot points to.

Proofreading Marks: Carrot & Swoosh mark

Sometimes, I will use the swoosh mark and provide words to replace the ones I swooshed.

Sometimes, I will use the carrot symbol (˅) to insert an entire sentence.

Proofreading Marks: Carrot & VT mark

Always introduce a quote with a short phrase. I used a carrot to suggest a way to introduce the quote.

Sometimes, I’ll use a carrot to insert a phrase. Notice the verb tense correction, too.

Proofreading Marks: Page numbers Make sure to include page numbers and/or chapter numbers. Here is a carrot to show you where it goes at the end of the sentence.

Here are the correct formats: (33; ch. 3)

or(33)or

(ch. 3)

Proofreading Marks: Wrong Word markThe WW mark means that the word, although similar sounding word, is wrong.

Page 18: To Kill a Mockingbird - sausd.us

Proofreading Marks: Run-on sentence

The run-on mark means that the sentence should have ended with a period, but you continued to write as if the sentence did not end.

Page 19: To Kill a Mockingbird - sausd.us

Proofreading Marks: Run-on sentences

Often times, if you have one run-on sentence, you have many more! This is a bad habit that needs to be broken if you want to write proficiently!

Page 20: To Kill a Mockingbird - sausd.us

Proofreading Marks: Comma Splice

The comma splice mark means you should have placed a period instead of placing a comma. It is the end of the sentence. Replace the comma with a period and capitalize the first letter of the next word.
