To the Faithful People of NUMC The grace and peace of Christ be with you.

This has been quite a summer. It reminds me of a very familiar song, The Times They Are A-Changin’, by Bob Dylan. We have had several staffing changes over the summer. We welcomed Bill Hutchins as our new business manager in May and then said goodbye to him in July. Now we welcome Rob Cappiello as

our new Business Manager. Rob and his wife Kathy previously owned Great Harvest Bread Company out near the hospital. He is a great fit with us!

For the times they are a-changin’

It seems that every time I turned around this summer, someone had died. It has been a rough summer. We lost John Seador and Sue Symes. Both were in their 50s. We also lost Carolyn Shortess and Steve Jenney. They both had more years under their belt, and like John and Sue, they both made a significant impact on our church. And, of course, my good friend and colleague, Rev. John Mitchell, also died. This congregation was so gracious and supportive of me. I thank all who sent me a card. Your love and support has been deeply appreciated.

For the times they are a-changin’

We also have had building changes going on. The new roof is now completed over the rear educational wing. Unfortunately, three inches of rain was too much for what was left of the old roof. We are now in the process of drying and cleaning in order for our marvelous preschool to be ready for the teachers’ return.

For the times they are a-changin’

One final change. John Quinn has submitted his resignation, reluctantly. He is moving up into management at FedEx and is encountering scheduling conflicts between his work there and what is on the horizon here. He will be available for special times, but we all will miss him at the organ bench and directing bells. I will much miss the joy of watching an organist play music that is sitting sideways on the music rack.

For the times they are a-changin’

Change can be difficult to live through. People we care for come in and out of our lives. Challenging surprises pop up. Nevertheless, God is present with us through it all. The living Christ walks beside us every moment. The Prayer of Thanksgiving from the Book of Worship memorial service states well my experience of the living God through the times they are a-changin’:

God of love, we thank you for all with which you have blessed us even to this day: for the gift of joy in days of health and strength and for the gifts of your abiding presence and promise in days of pain and grief.

May the love and grace of God gifted to you through the living Christ help you through all the times and all the changes.

Shalom,

Rev. Dr. David M. Palmer

WESLEY WORLD

Brunch Angels Feeding college students after worship has been a longstanding tradition at NUMC for decades. The UMW used to take care of the students every week As things grew and changed, others were asked to help out with this important ministry of hospitality. This year is no different. We are a larger group than we used to be, and that’s a good thing! It also means that what used to be a couple dozen donuts and some juice now is more involved, but it is Not Impossible. A committee or team could do it. A group of friends can do it. The Chancel Choir is doing it twice this year. We expect 30-40 college students on Sundays through October, so we’ll meet in Memorial Lounge—you may drop things off in the kitchenette when you come to worship. We’ll take care of the rest. We will even do dishes and put them in the Wesley Lounge for you to pick up (please pick them up!). The sign-up sheet by the Wesley Lounge door has more information to help you choose a Sunday (e.g., the size of the group, location for that morning).

Going Gray! Through September, Wesley Foundation officers will continue to attend each worship service wearing their gray Wesley polo shirts and nametags. Please help us identify students and connect with them, and greet them yourselves. We appreciate your making them feel welcome! You have done a great job with this in the past, and we know that you will exceed expectations again this year. I have a feeling this is going to be a great year!

To Overflowing! Thank you for all the water! We reached our goal of 800 bottles to share with UD students moving in, and received $180 on top of that (we used the cash to help pay for the UDairy Ice Cream we give out on that Sunday afternoon). Both events were a great success because of your overflowing generosity. Thank you for continuing to reach out and welcome the students in our midst: you are truly a blessing.

Welcome back for an exciting year with Newark United Methodist Women! We’ll begin our program year on Sunday,

September 7, 2014 at noon, after our Sunday worship service. We’ll have a potluck meal in the dining room.

Our program will feature Mrs. Veronica Oliver, Executive Director of Neighborhood House in Wilmington. A community center that helps those in its surrounding community, Neighborhood House supports them as they work to raise stable families, attend school, be employed, have food to eat, and have safe affordable housing. The University of Delaware has an Early Learning Center there, as well.

Please come and learn how we are carrying out John Wesley’s commandment to “do all the good we can, to all the people we can, in all situations we can, with all the love we can”. We will take an offering for Neighborhood House to contribute to the September 13 Community Wellness Walk at Bellevue State Park, sponsored by Blue Cross Highmark. Of course, both women and men are invited to come to our celebration.

SCOUTING THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!!! Thanks to everyone from the NUMC family, friends and the members of Troop 255 for coming out to support my Eagle Scout Project Fundraiser Car Wash on August 2. Although Saturday morning started off dreary, I was really lucky, and the weather cleared off. The car wash was very well-attended, and I was able to raise over half of the funds needed for my Eagle Scout Service Project. I also would like to thank the Trustees of NUMC for allowing me to use the parking lot, and for supplying the water.

Yours in Scouting, Alan Buckmaster, Troop 255 FRIENDLY’S NIGHT—September 10, 5-9pm Hello Everyone—the Boy Scout Troop of NUMC would like to invite our church family and friends to participate in a Friendly's Night, an Eagle Scout Service Project Fundraiser at the Rte 896 Friendly's on Wednesday, September 10th from 5pm to 9pm. Please come out to support this fundraising event. Give Mom and Dad the night off from cooking and support a good cause. Hope to see you there!

Chick Flick: Philomena

Saturday, October 11, 12pm

Philomena is a 2013 drama directed by Stephen Frears, based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by journalist Martin Sixsmith. Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, it tells the true story of Philomena Lee's 50-year-long search for her son (wikipedia).

We’ll be ordering a Capriotti’s meal for lunch. See the announcements page on the NUMC site to reserve your meal ($12 including beverage, payable by 10/8). Print reservation forms are available in the Christian Education office. Questions? Contact Donna ([email protected]; 368-8774, x225).

TIGHed Up…for a Moment

Happy Marriage=Reduced Arthritic Pain?

Participants in a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine reported about happiness in their marriage: how much they agreed or disagreed, demonstrations of affection, philosophy of life and interaction with in-laws. Forty-four were in distressed marriages, 114 in happy marriages and 97 unmarried. The average age was 55.

They were then assessed by joint examinations for tenderness and swelling, emotional response to pain, and physical pain.

Authors of the study reported that among married subjects, better marital adjustment was associated with less physical disability and marginally less pain. These findings suggest that being married may have health benefits, given that the marriage is well-adjusted (or at least not distressed).

One of the churches I served some years ago operated a preschool. Twice a day, children were dropped off and then picked up. Often, mothers lingered to chat with one another. Many of the children, not overjoyed about being herded into a car while mommies talked, searched for ways to encourage Mom to wrap it up. One thing they tried was blasting the car horn at regular intervals for extended

periods of time. This always got my attention in the church office. But never, it seemed, the mothers. Without batting an eye or missing a syllable, the moms kept right on talking.

I suppose that, in order to preserve sanity, evolution blessed mothers with the gift of attention discernment. Toddlers are capable of unleashing on moms hundreds of demands per hour. A mysterious internal decoding system enables Mother to screen the incoming messages, benevolently ignoring the inconsequential, yet knowing intuitively when all else must be set aside and undivided attention given the child.

The truth is, we all develop selective listening skills. We learn to tune out lots going on around us. In other words, we hear what we want to hear.

“If you have ears, then hear!”, Jesus often exclaimed. That the Disciples remembered him saying it so frequently suggests that it was a signature phrase. You can imagine them lip-synching the words whenever their Master was bringing a sermon to a close. We may surmise that Jesus sensed that, while he was passionately trying to communicate an important truth, many listeners were simultaneously editing his words to suit what they wanted to hear. There wasn’t anything physically wrong with their otological apparatus. They may have been close enough to touch him, but they weren’t hearing what he was really saying!

Noise fills the earth. We choose what we will hear. The voice of things spiritual is often as soft as a lullaby. We ignore it, however, to our peril and undoing. To tune out the inspirations of eternity is to forfeit our best and truest selves. The Lord is always inviting us to converse; in the pages of the Bible, at worship, through conversation with Godly people, and in so many additional ways. We have ears to hear. Are we listening?

Peace and love,

George Tigh Pastor of Congregational Care

Young Adult Announcements

Young Adult Bible Study: Tuesday nights (Rm 109), 6:30-8:30pm, beginning 9/2

We are doing a study on the book of Nehemiah, a man who followed God’s call to rebuild Jerusalem. All young adults are welcome to join us weekly for Bible study and fellowship time!

Young Adult Worship: Last Friday of each month, 7-8pm, beginning 9/26 Let us gather together to worship God through music, prayer and fellowship. Childcare can be available to those who need it. Contact Melanie if you would like to be involved with music or worship planning!

Notes from Melanie:

On 8/19, I celebrate one full year here at NUMC! I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve and spend time with some really great youth and adults. I have grown in so many different ways over this past year: professionally, relationally, and especially spiritually.

The growing Young Adult Bible Study is studying the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was a man of Israel living in Persia after the end of the Babylonian Israelite exile. He found the city of his ancestors, Jerusalem, in ruins, with no city wall for protection. Nehemiah felt the calling of God to go to Jerusalem and fix the wall. Many of the people in the city were excited about the project, but Nehemiah faced opposition all along the way. The thing that caught my attention is that Nehemiah lived every moment in a relationship with God. Throughout the first two chapters, we see him praying continually, using Godly wisdom, and always in tune with God. It is as though he lived with the very mind and heart of God. His relationship with God directed his every move.

Nehemiah’s relationship with God has made me think more about my own. No matter what ministry or profession we are in, God wants to be a part of what we are doing. We should be including God in our every plan and prayer. I want to trust God in every way; I want to serve in ministry following God’s plans for me, and to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I want my relationship with God to flow through every part of my life.

Take some time to study Nehemiah for yourself (or check out our Bible Study!). I pray that you will want to follow God all the more. God bless!

BUNTING LIBRARY NEWS

Recent Reads Book Group

Come and share books, light refreshments and delightful

company.

Join us in Bunting Library for our next meeting:

Monday, 9/8, 2-3pm

Teachers and parents will appreciate books that can help them talk to children when they have questions and are curious to get answers. Here are some of the books in our collection that will help children learn and understand about Jesus and God.

God Made Me, by Dandi Daley Mackall. This book for children just learning to read addresses a fundamental concern: Who am I?

Little One, God Made You, by Amy Warren Hilliker. Read to and share with your little one that God made us to love us.

God Loves You, by Carol Rubow. Children learn that God loves all the many different people in the world, no matter the size or color or where they come from.

How Big Was Goliath?, by Betsy Rosen Elliot. Here are answers to many of a child's first Bible questions from Old Testament stories, given in delightfully simple text, with fun facts and illustrations.

Did Jesus Wear Blue Jeans?, by Betsy Rosen Elliot. As above, but this second book of the pair addresses children's questions from the New Testament.

If Jesus Came to My House, by Joan G. Thomas. In this simple, touching story a boy sees that he can treat others according to the lessons he would learn if Jesus came to his house.

Bible Heroes I Can Be, by Ann Eisenberg. This is a book to be shared with very young children; read to them, look at and talk about the pictures together.

Best-Loved Bible Verses for Children. Beautiful illustrations by Anna Marie Magagna accompany favorite Bible scripture from the Psalms, Proverbs and various prophets from the OT. Included are Psalm 23 in its entirety, also the Lord's Prayer from the NT.

God and Me, 365 Daily Devotions, by Penny Boshoff. Each day a short Bible passage for the parent and child to read together supports the day's message, and a prayer helps children to develop their relationship with God. (Parental Guidance, 3+ years).

Bible Sunday 2014

Information about Bible Sunday has been mailed to each eligible child for whom there is a viable address in our church database. If your third-grader did not receive an invitation to participate, please contact Donna (368-8774, x225; [email protected]).

One hour a week can change your life—

Come to dinner in Heritage Hall on September 20 at 5 pm and find out how!

What if? What if carving out just 60 minutes a week to meet with others would really transform the way you live your life as a Christian disciple?

Covenant Discipleship (CD) is a modern adaptation of John Wesley’s class meetings and is designed to reclaim his practical wisdom of accountable living within community. The premise is simple: join a small group to develop a covenant that includes works of mercy and piety, then meet together weekly to report on how closely you’ve held to the ideals of that covenant.

Here’s how one current group member described her situation: “I was hesitant to get involved in a CD group because I couldn't quite imagine finding the time for a weekly meeting in the midst of my nutty life. Now, I look forward to that weekly meeting, both for the community and for the deeply felt presence of God that we share every time we meet.”

And as Rev. Palmer succinctly puts it, “Covenant Discipleship connects people relationally and helps us mature in our faith.”

This month, please consider regularly practicing your discipleship by becoming part of a new CD group or joining an existing one:

Come to the dinner in Heritage Hall on Saturday, September 20 at 5pm to find out more and/or to sign up for a group. Our current CD groups will provide the food and drink,

or contact CD coordinator Mark Deshon (738-9524; [email protected]),

Or simply seek out one of the current participants to learn more. You will find a list of the groups and their participants on the CD bulletin board outside Rm 104, along with samples of our covenants.

NUMC at Community Day Join us on September 21!

It’s coming! Community Day will be here before you know it, and NUMC has the opportunity to Radiate God’s Love to the many, many folks who'll be there to enjoy the food, activities and fun from 11am-4pm that Sunday on the UD Green. We need volunteers to help us prepare our booth in the week beforehand, plus folks to be there answering the questions of the Community Day crowd.

This is a delightful event, and a great opportunity for members new and old to represent this wonderful church family. If you’d like to help prepare and/or be at the booth that day, please contact Pamela White, Membership Chair (410/620-9352; [email protected]). It’s light work, and lots of fun!

G.R.E.E.N. Team Mission Project – Sponsoring Nkonin

The G.R.E.E.N. Team (God’s Really Energetic, Enthusiastic Newark Team) is a great group of 4th-6th graders who help with various tasks around the church, including acting as summer liturgists and Sunday School helpers. And we need your help in our current mission project!

We need our church family to pitch in to help make a difference in a special girl’s life. Last month’s Parish Notes featured an article about 14-year-old Nkonin Sumare, living in Kenya.

Our current fundraiser is Penny Wars, which began on August 24. Here’s how it works:

Last names beginning with A-L=Team

Alpha; last names beginning with M-Z =Team Omega (get it?)

Each cent contributed on a Sunday morning=1 pt (e.g., quarter=25 pts, dollar=100 pts, 5 dollars=500 pts).

Positive points=any coin or bill with President Lincoln on it; Negative points=picture of any other president/statesperson.

The strategy is to put more cancelling-out coins/bills in the box of your rivals, and pennies (and maybe even five-dollar-bills) in your own bin. There will be boxes in both Heritage Hall and Cokesbury Lobby.

The battle ends at noon on September 28.

Winners will be announced on the following Sunday. Let’s see which team earns bragging rights as the most helpful and generous of all!

Thanks for your help and support.

Present to Participate Sunday School Attendance Incentive

Information on Present to Participate (P2P) has been mailed to the homes of all 2013-14 Sunday school participants who are in K-6 this fall, and is available on the website’s Announcements page. Please register your children for Sunday School online (print forms available on ushers’ tables and elsewhere)—you’ll give your children a head start with three P2P bonus points before the year starts!

Also important as we begin the program year: Links are available for online sign-ups for Turn-

Around Sunday (9/28 at the 9:30am service; sign-ups due 9/21), and to a P2P questionnaire that must be completed by Sunday, 10/5. The print equivalents of both may be found at ushers’ tables and elsewhere around the building.

Please note that parent and child participation on Turn-Around Sunday also accounts for three P2P bonus points. More bonus point opportunities at the beginning of the program year are detailed in the Present to Participate information noted above.

Save the date!!!

NUMC will be hosting a Christmas Bazaar & White Elephant on 11/15. If you are a crafter or if you have a product-based home business, this is a great chance to sell your crafts and goods! A 10x8 space is $35 for NUMC members on a first-come basis. A space-reservation/event agreement form will be posted online--or register your interest with Christine Wiebe

([email protected]).

And look around your homes for gently-used

items and children's clothing to donate to our White Elephant room. All proceeds from this room will benefit the Christian Education Teams.

Any Council Team wishing to have a table to promote a specific ministry or mission may do so at no cost. In addition, you may sell baked goods or other food to bazaar patrons/participants from 11am-2pm...or your team might want to be a “lunch-runner” for the vendors/crafters who cannot leave their spaces to obtain food (we hope to have some discounted food from Main Street restaurants). You’d take orders and fetch the food for vendors, who’d then pay your team a small delivery fee. Please contact Donna ([email protected]) or Christine to make arrangements.

We’re also looking for businesses to donate food (e.g., baked goods/beverages) that we can resell to the public. Donating businesses will receive advertising (thank-you signage) during the event, and an acknowledgement from the church for tax purposes. Contact Christine if you own or know of a business that may be interested.

Make an important connection...

The Membership team is looking for a coordinator to lead our efforts to follow up with members who haven’t been around/made contact in a while. We notice when folks are missing, but at this point, we don’t have enough person-power to make a call or a visit on behalf of the church family to see if there’s something we can do for them.

The coordinator would lead a small team to make calls to folks we haven’t heard from in a month or more. This is a very important aspect of Radiating God’s Love: might this be a calling for you? If so, please contact Pamela White, Membership Chair (410/620-9352; [email protected]).

Time for Tutoring!

School is about to start, and that means that tutoring will be up and running again soon! This will be our 4th year of reaching out to students and families who can use some extra help in a variety of subjects. We offer tutoring to kindergartners through 12th graders. We meet on Tuesday/Thursday afternoons in the church between 3:30-6pm; there is no cost for this service. All of our tutors are volunteers, and many of them are retired teachers. If you happen to know of students who could use some extra help, please don't hesitate to tell them about our program. We are always looking for ways to reach out to the community and offer support to any student in need. Families do not need to be church members to take part in this program.

And, if you happen to have a little extra time, YOU may be interested in joining our illustrious group of tutors. We are always looking to increase our pool of volunteers. You don't need to commit to any more than an hour or two a week, and if you vacation during the school year, we can work around your traveling schedule!

Please share my contact information with anyone who may need tutoring help or if you would like to become a tutor—Cathy Drew (738-9099; [email protected]).

Thanks so much!

Fall Sunday School Mission Project

From September 7-November 16, children and adults in the Sunday school program are encouraged to contribute to the fall mission campaign to benefit MOSAIC Delaware. This 100+ year-old organization helps citizens with intellectual disabilities develop meaningful, productive lives and become solid citizens. A Mosaic Box in which to deposit contributions will be available each Sunday morning in Heritage Hall. For children in grades K-6, participating in this project can yield P2P points, but the child (or parent, for younger children) must sign the participation sheet next to the box in order to receive points. All other Sunday School participants of any age are invited to place their contributions in the box without signing the sheet. Thank you for your support of this mission effort.

BELIEVERS IN ACTION: IMAGINE

Imagine what it would be like if we had two greeters to greet visitors and church members at each door for each service every Sunday. What a thrill it would be if we had the issue of too many folks helping in Sunday School! Just think of how many hospital visits we could make or meals we could prepare for family members in need if we had more volunteers. Or how about so many choir members that we would need to place extra chairs in the chancel to fit them in?

Imagine if all of our church members were engaged in some ministry, committee or service. NUMC certainly accomplishes much through your hard work and volunteerism. But imagine if our ministries were even more robust, and our ability to start new ministries to serve God was easier. An even more engaged church family helping our own and looking outside to help others?

Just imagine…

If your imaginations are running wild and you’d like to talk to someone about what you would like to do, please contact Kathy Werrell ([email protected]; 239-4646) or Joanne Deshon ([email protected]; 738-9524).
