If you have anything that you want share, or parents if you have any questions, don’t forget to email us at [email protected] and we’ll do what we can to help. Love from, Miss Dolphin, Miss Loveless, Miss Kenniford, Mrs Vellender, Miss Duncan and Miss Rose xx 1. I am an author. Read the poem below and answer the VIPERS questions about it. The poem is called ‘The School Caretaker’. Before you read the poem, make your prediction about what the poem will be about. You could try performing the poem, using actions and different expressions to make it more interesting for the reader. 2. I am a scientist. Have a look at some of the experiments below. Try and make some predictions about what you think will happen before you complete the experiments or read the explanations. Make a note of your predictions so that you can see if you were right. 3. I am a mathematician. Have a go at some of the questions below. Use the link for helpful videos to help you with the methods and calculations. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ We are working from week 2 (w/c 27 th April) If you want access to the manipulatives, maths bot is a great tool https://mathsbot.com/manipulatives/placeValueCounters 4. I am an author. Over the weekend, the country celebrated a historic event called VE Day. Create a fact file to explain what VE day is. You could do this on paper or on whatever device you have at home. It could be a poster or a presentation, the choice is yours! Here are some useful links you could use to find some information, or there is information for you below in the notes. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48201749 https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/what-you-need-to-know-about-ve-day https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/10-photos-of-ve-day-celebrations Remember it is a time of celebration so think about making your presentation eye- catching and intriguing. 5. I am an engineer Have a go at making your own homemade water bombs by following the instructions below. 6. Jigsaw / PSHE Use the wheel below to fill in some of the things you have done during the lockdown. Think about what you are thankful for and if you have learnt any new things because of the time you have had.

The School Caretaker by Brian Patten In the corner of the playground Down dark and slimy stairs, Lived a monster with a big nose Full of curly hairs. . He had a bunch of keyrings Carved out of little boys, He confiscated comics And all our favourite toys. He wore a greasy uniform Looked like an undertaker, More scary than a horror film, He was the school caretaker. I left the school some years ago; Saw him again the other day He looked rather old and sad Shuffling on his way. It’s funny when you grow up How grown-ups start growing down, And the snarls upon their faces Are no more than a frown. In the corner of the playground Down dark and slimy stairs Sits a lonely little man With a nose full of curly hairs.

V- What does it mean to confiscate something? Check your answer in a dictionary or by doing a google search. I- Do you think the caretaker was as horrible at the start of the poem as the children thought? What would make them think he was horrible and scary? P- You should have made your prediction before reading the poem. E- What message is the author trying to send in this poem? R- 1. What does the caretaker take away from the

children? 2. What does the author compare the caretaker’s

appearance to? S- Summarise the poem in 30 words or less.

VE Day - or 'Victory in Europe Day' - marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WW2) when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end.

On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before.

How was VE Day celebrated? By the beginning of 1945, the German army had been weakened and defeat looked likely. Tuesday 8 May, 1945, was an emotional day that millions of people had been waiting for. Many people were extremely happy that the fighting had stopped and there were big celebrations and street parties.

Huge crowds - with lots of people dressed in red, white and blue - gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London. They cheered as King George VI and his family, including Princess Elizabeth (the current queen) and Princess Margaret, came out onto the balcony to greet everybody.

Princess Elizabeth and her sister were allowed to leave the palace and celebrate with crowds outside, although they had to do it secretly.

The future Queen described it as "one of the most memorable nights of my life".

Many people also attended church services to thank God for the victory.

London's St Paul's Cathedral held 10 services, which were attended by thousands of people.

But VE Day was also a moment of great sadness and reflection, as millions of people had lost their lives or loved ones in the conflict.

Many had to continue fighting in other battles and lots of people were being kept as prisoners of war abroad.

Scientist

Your task…

Layer different liquids in a tube and discover how and why they settle in a certain order.

Make a prediction…

Predict what will happen to the liquids as the settle. Why do you think this has happened?

The method

1. Start by adding food colouring to the clear liquids so that you can identify them when they are place in the water.

2. Measure out equal quantities of each liquid and add them to the tube one by one.

Liquid Densities Materials • A glass • Honey • Oil • Water • Washing up liquid • Food colouring If you have any other liquids that you want to experiment with then of course DO!

Scared Pepper!

Materials • Ground Black Pepper • A bowl • Water • Washing up liquid or soap

Your task…

Move pepper away from you without touching it.

Make a prediction…

Predict what will happen to the pepper if you try to touch it with soap or washing up liquid on your hands. Why do you think this has happened?

The method

.1. Fill the bowl with water.

2. Add some pepper to the top of the water, do not stir it in.

3. Dip your finger into the water, note down what happens.

4. Put a small amount of soap or washing up liquid on your finger.

5. Dip it back into the water.

6. What happens to the pepper?

Homemade Water Bombs

Materials • Square pieces of paper • Water

Your task…

Make your own water bomb out of paper.

The method

.1. Take a square piece of paper, fold it in half diagonally to create a crease and unfold. Repeat in the opposite direction so you have an ‘x’ shape.

2. Flip the paper over and fold it in half top to bottom.

3. Flip the paper over again and press down in the middle, while folding in the flaps of the side. You should get a triangle.

4. Take the flaps on the front side and fold them in the middle.

5. Fold the side corners to the middle line. This should create little pockets.

6. Take the flaps above the pockets and push them in to the pockets.

7. Repeat steps 4-6 on the other side.

8. Blow in the little hole in the bottom to inflate.

9. Carefully fill your water bomb. You may want to pour water in rather than take it straight from the tap.

Use the diagram to help you with the folds.
