WHAT IS TOBACCO? It is a plant that grows naturally in North and South America. It is related to the potato, pepper, and the nightshade (a poisonous plant).

Its leaves are dried and processed into cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco and pipe tobacco.

Cigarettes…

Uniform size

Different cigarettes contain different amounts of tar

Cigarette smoke contains over 100 carcinogens – over 50 in secondhand smoke

Vary in amount of tobacco

Contains more tar

Cigar smoke has higher levels of toxins

Can contain up to 400 times more nicotine than a cigarette

The amount of nicotine contained depends on the type of smokeless tobacco (moist snuff is highest)

Contains no tar

Contains up to 28 different carcinogens

Contains nicotine – dependent on location grown and sugar content

Contains no tar

Contains an equivalent amount of carcinogens as cigarettes and cigars
