GEOFACTExtreme poverty, defined

as living on less than $1.90

a day, is likely to affect

between 9.1% and 9.4%

of the world's population

in 2020, according to the

biennial Poverty and

Shared Prosperity Report.

How Do We Classify Countries?

Present New Information

Classifying Countries:

• The map shows how the world was viewed in the

1980s.

• It could easily be divided into rich/poor (or

developed/developing) with most people living in

the latter.

• These classifications are now unhelpful - why?

By 2020 the world has progressed, and 75% of the population live somewhere in the middle (with

only 9% in ‘poor’ countries). Therefore, the map is misleading as it completely ignores 5 billion

people and does not reflect how much progress the world has made.

Present New Information

How should we classify countries?

• Instead of using two descriptors for

the word ‘rich and poor’ or

‘developed and developing’, we

need more categories.

• At GCSE, we use 3 - LIC, NEE & HIC.

• Hans Rosling uses 4

• The conclusion? No-one can decide on

how best to group the countries of the

world.

Categorising

the world

according to

4 income

levels:

Each figure in the chart represents 1 billion people, and the seven figures show how the current

world population is spread out across four income levels, expressed in terms of dollar income

per day.

Think of the four income levels as the levels of a computer game. Everyone wants to move from

Level 1 to Level 2 and upward through the levels from there. Only, it’s a very strange computer

games because Level 1 is the hardest, not easiest.

Review & Reflect

One billion people live on Level 1. This is what we think of as extreme

poverty. If you’re on Level 1, you survive on less than $2 a day and get

around by walking barefoot. Your food is cooked over an open fire, and you

spend most of your day travelling to fetch water. At night, you and your

children sleep on a dirt floor.

Review & Reflect

Three billion people live on Level 2, between $2 and $8 a day. Level 2

means that you can buy shoes and maybe a bike, so it doesn’t take so long to

get water. Your kids go to school instead of working all day. Dinner is made

over a gas stove, and your family sleeps on mattresses instead of the floor.

Two billion people live on Level 3, between $8 and $32 a day. You have

running water and a fridge in your home. You can also afford a motorbike to

make getting around easier. Some of your kids start (and even finish) high

school.

One billion people live on Level 4. If you spend more than $32 a day, you’re

on Level 4. You have at least a high school education and probably afford to

buy a car and take a vacation once in a while.
