Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 03, 2019

From the Pastor

Dcn. Abel CortesDcn. Larry LucidoDcn. Bob Marrinan

Dcn. Brian MitchellDcn. Peter Raad

Dear Parishioners,

I write you this message in order to make you aware of an important event that occurred

in our diocese last week.

As I preached at all of the Masses last weekend, on Thursday, January 31st, the Diocese

of Dallas joined most of the other dioceses, in the state of Texas in posting lists of clergy

and religious brothers and sisters who worked in their respective dioceses at any point

since 1950 and who have been credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. Other

dioceses have already published and maintained such lists—for example, the Diocese of

Fort Worth has had its list posted on its diocesan website since 2007.

Posting these lists is part of a larger movement towards transparency. It marks

another step in the Church’s fight against the evil of sexual abuse of minors that plagues our

contemporary society. The rationale behind publicly posting these lists is to empower past

victims to seek and receive assistance. In short, this action is a step towards justice.

As an institution committed to the safety of those entrusted to our care and to the

eradication of abuse in all forms, St. Monica Catholic Church and School engage a robust

Safe Environment program. All employees and volunteers at our parish and our parish

school are required to receive training to both recognize and report suspected abuse.

As always, the Diocese of Dallas asks anyone who has information about abuse or

who has been abused by any priest, deacon, employee, or volunteer of the Church to

immediately contact local law enforcement officials: the Texas Department of Family and

Protective Services at 1-800-252-5400 (http://www.txabusehotline.org) or, in an emergency,

to the appropriate police authority, usually by calling 911. After making a report to law

enforcement, individuals with knowledge about violations of diocesan policy should also

call the Chancellor or the Safe Environment Director of the Diocese at 214-528-2240, or they

may write to them at the Diocese of Dallas, P.O. Box 190507, Dallas, TX 75219.

The sexual abuse of minors is a crime and a sin, and when it occurs within the Church it

is especially disheartening. It may take many years to rebuild the trust lost in these scandals,

but the purifying light of the truth is an essential step toward healing. As we take these

painful but crucial movements toward justice for victims, the Lord calls us all to be vigilant

in our care for the vulnerable. At the same time, He invites us to place our hope in Him, the

One who never fails to proclaim to us His salvation from this sinful and broken world.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Michael GuadagnoliPastor of St. Monica Catholic Church
