Throughout Holdrege and the surrounding communi-

ties, countless people know about the YMCA OF THE

PRAIRIE. But, there’s so much more to our Y than one

might think. From exercise to education, from aero-

bics to advocacy, from fitness to financial assistance,

the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies, it strength-

ens our communities.

We believe everyone deserves a Y, so the YMCA OF THE

PRAIRIE offers financial assistance to individuals and families

who might otherwise not be able to afford membership or

program fees. Ask a staff member about financial assistance.

It’s easy to apply.

CHILD WATCH

Child Watch is supervised play for children ages 6 weeks to 7

years while parents exercise at the Y. The time limit for child

watch is 1 hour and 45 minutes. Parents must remain in the

building. Hours are:

Monday-Friday, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Monday-Thursday, 4:30-8 p.m.

Saturdays, 9-11 a.m. through April.

BOOT CAMP Boot camp gives you cardiovascular, muscle-building workouts

developed by personal trainers that guarantee results. With a

limited ratio of members to instructors, you will receive indi-

vidual motivation each week. Plus, the accountability and ca-

maraderie from other participants is a special bonus.

BOOT CAMP EXPRESS If you’ve always wanted to try boot camp, but the snooze but-

ton was just too tempting, the Y has a new option — Express

Boot Camp. This boot camp starts at 8:30 a.m. and lasts for

45 minutes. You will enjoy motivating, high-energy workouts

developed by personal trainers that guarantee a healthier body

and spirit. Plus, you will enjoy the support and motivation of

the group setting.

Tuesday-Thursday 8:30-9:15 a.m.

Winter Session 1: January 6-February 12.

SPLIT THE POT GROUP EXERCISE CHALLENGE

Try your luck at winning some cash and get active at the same

time with the Y’s new Split the Pot Challenge. The challenge is

to attend 20 group exercise classes in 30 days, starting on

Valentine’s Day and ending the day before St. Patrick’s Day.

Ninety percent of the fees paid for the challenge will go into a

“pot.” The participants who complete the challenge will split

the pot on St. Patty’s Day.

Fee: $10. Limit: 75 participants.

LIGHTEN UP THE PRAIRIE

Sponsored by Great Western Bank

Losing weight can be a difficult. Our annual weight-loss

challenge makes it a little easier by providing the

accountability of weekly meetings with Y staff and ongoing

support and education. Plus, there’s the option of signing up

with a partner (spouse, friend, parent of sibling) for added

accountability. This program includes weekly individual

meetings (40 minutes) with a coach, as well as nutrition tips,

recipes and mini challenges. And, there’s a little extra

incentive as the individual who loses the highest percentage

of weight will win $500! A $100 prize will be awarded to the

partners who lose the highest percentage.

New members who join the Y and the challenge at the same

time will receive 50 percent off the $40 joining fee.

Challenge Dates: January 12-April 3

Fee: $60 members/$45 per person if signing up with partner.

Limit: 50. Must be 16 to participate.

wellness. At every age and every level of activity, you’ll

find people just like you looking to live a little bit

healthier. Members and program participants often cite

the support and enthusiasm of fellow participants and

staff as some of the key factors in their achievement of

greater well-being.

PERSONAL TRAINING

Personal training is all about finding your strength within. We

are just here to bring that strength out. Our personal trainers

partner with you to help launch and sustain a smart exercise

program. It’s not about the big gains, it’s about the development

of better habits over time. We’ll make sure you go home with a

new sense of knowledge and accomplishment after every

session. Partner and group personal training packages are also

VOLLEYBALL LEAGUES

If you find yourself sitting on the couch too much this winter,

get back in the game with a volleyball league. You’ll be using

muscles you forgot you had, and you might enjoy a little

competition again.

Women’s League

Sundays, February 22-April 26, 5:15-9 p.m.

Register by Monday, Feb. 16.

Fee: $80 per team. Games are played 6-on-6 at the YMCA with

a tournament following the regular season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Go for two points or even three on your way to an active lifestyle in this adult league. Games are played 5-on-5 with a tournament following regular season play. Games are played at Holdrege High School.

Sundays, March 1-April 26, 5:30-10:30 p.m. Fee: $100 per team.

GROUP EXERCISE

Getting involved in a group exercise class improves your chances for developing a sustainable fitness routine. The Y offers a variety of group exercise classes at many times during the morning, afternoon and evening. Class schedules change slightly every few months, many times adding new classes to accommodate member requests.

Group exercise classes are included in your membership. There’s no need to register. Just come when you can.

STRENGTH CLASSES — Gain strength and endurance with the following classes: RIP, TRX and TRIP.

YOUTH SOCCER (U4-U14)

Children will learn about more than scoring a point and kicking a

ball in this youth soccer league that is a joint program between

the Y and the Prairie Sports Association. Important skills like

teamwork and fair play will be emphasized, plus your child will

stay active and meet new friends. Games and practices will be

behind the Holdrege Middle School.

Sundays, March 15-April 26, 2-6 p.m.

DUCK RUN MILEAGE CLUB

Accomplishing a goal takes preparation and practice. Children

can prepare together for the Duck Run on May 1 in this fun

run club. Prizes will be awarded for reaching mileage goals.

April 28 & 30 will be make-up days if needed.

YOUTH TRAVEL BASEBALL (GRADES 3-8)

YMCA and PSA youth sports teach skills to make it more fun

and exciting for emerging athletes. The 9 and older divisions

will compete in the South Central Baseball League and will

travel to compete against other towns.

Dates: Early May-early July

Games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 or 8

p.m. Practices will be determined by coaches at a later date.

(Grade as of 2014-2015 school year).

YOUTH RECREATION BASEBALL (GRADES 1-2)

This introductory baseball program helps youth learn the fun-

damentals of baseball and the basic rules of the game.

Grab a glove and learn about baseball in this YMCA/PSA be-

YOGA KIDS

NEW! SPORTS N’ SWIM Sports N Swim for preschoolers is a great way to introduce your

child to the gym and pool. After 30 minutes of a variety of sports

like basketball, t-ball, soccer and golf, we will head into the pool

for a structured lesson in the water. The YMCA’s four core val-

ues: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are infused into

every class so that kids focus on the value of sportsmanship.

Parent participation is NOT required for this class.

LEAP & LEARN The Leap & Learn program is a fun-filled time for children ages 3

-5. Y staff will lead the children through activities to encourage

may include counting, alphabet, story time, circle time to share

thoughts, coloring and crafts. We also include gym games, track

time, free play and outdoor time as the weather permits.

ENRICHING young lives

NEW SPORTS N’ SWIM PROGRAM gives preschoolers a chance to explore land and water exercises.

March 6, March 12 & March 13 School Day Out will give you peace of mind while you are at work. The program will assure learning, fun and character-building experiences. The activities are designed to keep your child’s mind and body active while teaching them the Y’s core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

CRANE RIVER DRAMA

Grades K-2: 10 a.m.-Noon Clowning Around: Explore, create and have fun. Theater games are the perfect way for kids to break out of their shell and interact with others, while having a blast at the same time. Kids will use a variety of methods to create their own version of a well-known story through songs, dance and im-agination.

Grades 3-5: 2-4 p.m. Comedy Sports: On your marks, get set, LAUGH! This inter-active workshop will be full of games that focus on the won-derful world of comedy. Kids will create characters and story-lines that lend themselves to the humor of everyday life.

Class limit: 25 for each class Fee: $20 members/$40 non-members

YOUTH WEIGHT TRAINING

Participants will learn the basics of weight lifting followed by

weight training on free weights and Cybex weight machines.

Participants can exercise in the wellness center upon comple-

tion. Class includes training on exercise etiquette, body com-

position, benefits of exercise, weight-training basics, cardio-

vascular fitness, nutrition and supplement use, machine and

free-weight training sessions.

Two-day sessions are offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays,

5:30-7:30 p.m., on the following dates: Jan. 6 & 8, Feb. 3 &

5, Feb. 17 & 19, March 3 & 5, March 24 & 26, April 7 & 9,

April 21 & 23.

Ages: 11-14. Fee: $20. Limit: 5 participants in each session.

NERF WARS

Nerf Wars at the Y are more than a battle with foam darts. This

program helps kids develop teamwork, problem solving and

sportsmanship. Bring your Nerf guns, and we will supply the

darts and the engineering help. The kids will have to work to-

gether within groups to put strategies into practice as they

build barriers with different objects.

Dates: January 3, February 21, March 21 Ages: 7-13 Time: 7-8:30 p.m. Class limit: 30 Fee: $5 members/$10 non-members KIDS NIGHT OUT MUSTACHE BASH VALENTINE PARTY

ty? Parents can enjoy their own date night while kids have a

blast in a safe, caring, and fun environment at the YMCA, where

they will enjoy games, crafts and a movie. Dinner and snack pro-

vided.

PRESCHOOL SUPERHERO SPECTACULAR

Kids will put their imaginations to work in this special event

where they can become an official superhero by completing the

Y’s superhero training-obstacle course. Little ones will also get

creative by building their own superhero scenes, and they will

enjoy superhero crafts and games. Dinner and snack provided.

Superhero costumes welcome.

Friday, May 8, 6:30-8 p.m. Register by March 13.

Ages: 3-5

Fee: Free event with preschool soccer registration. Otherwise,

CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY AT THE Y! The Y provides a fun environment for children’s birthday parties. The $50 party package includes

cupcakes, drinks and table service for 10 children, a T-shirt for the birthday child and two hours in the Y

however you want to spend it. Please book parties at least one week in advance.

HEALTHY KIDS DAY

Friday, May 1

Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow.

But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate

the body and mind ends with the school year. In fact,

research shows that kids are prone to gain more weight

and fall behind in studies during summer.

On May 1, the Y will celebrate Healthy Kids Day®, our

national initiative to improve the health and well-being

of kids to prevent summer weight gain and learning

loss.

Join the YMCA OF THE PRAIRIE for fun activities de-

signed to help families and kids live healthier. This

event will be free and open to the public with fun, active

play and educational opportunities. Build a happier,

healthier kids based on the incredible potential inside

your child. Watch for more details as the date draws

near.

MAKING memories WEIRD SCIENCE SATURDAY

Saturday, January 17, 10 a.m.-Noon

The entire family will enjoy more than 30 hands-on science ex-

hibits from the Edgerton Explorit Center at this fun and educa-

tional event! The Edgerton center is a children’s science museum

in Aurora. The museum will be bringing its educational exhibits

Hop into the Y for the annual Indoor Easter Egg Hunt and Egg

Decorating family event. Children in elementary school and

younger are invited to scramble for eggs and then stay to ex-

pend some creative energy with egg decorating. The Lonestar

4H Club will bring live bunnies for kids to pet.

Fee: $3 per child members/$5 per child non-members.

FAMILY NERF WARS

Saturday, April 18, 7-8:30 p.m.

This program will encourage your family to work together to

develop teamwork, problem solving skills and sportsmanship.

Bring your Nerf guns, and we will supply the darts and the engi-

neering help.

SNOWFLAKE BALL, DAD & DAUGHTER DATE NIGHT

Saturday, February 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Girls, bring your dad, grandpa, uncle or favorite guy to an ex-

traordinary date, the Disney’s Frozen-themed Snowflake Ball.

We understand the importance of father-daughter relationships

and want to encourage dads to take a break from busy sched-

ules to enjoy their daughter’s company. Dads, don’t miss out on

this amazing opportunity to show your daughter(s) you care! No

daughter is too old for this. Enjoy a meal, special dance with a

deejay, take-home craft and professional photos. Elsa and Anna

will visit the Snowflake Ball and sing a Frozen song. It is sure to

be a night to remember!

Saturday, February 28, Noon-5 p.m.

Cinderella never had it this easy. Make the Snowflake Ball more

magical with a trip to the Snowflake Spa. Girls will be treated to

an “updo” and have their nails painted. Thank you to Kris Shaver

at Pampered Soles and Joelle Rehnberg at Blonde Hair Salon for

making this event possible.

Fee: $14 members/$18 non-members.

These two fishing events help kids enjoy the great outdoors and

learn new skills at the same time. Watch for details on our web

VOLUNTEERS WANTED If you have been looking for a great volunteer opportunity,

YMCA family programs might just fit the bill. We can always use

great volunteers to help with family events. Whether its helping

decorate for the snowflake ball or boiling Easter eggs, we can

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

March 11-14

Participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to

be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be

certified in CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First

Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Training does

have a prerequisite physical competency and involves e-

learning segments to be completed outside the classroom.

Physical Competency: March 11, 2-3:30 p.m.

Training: March 12, 13 & 14, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fee: $150 members/$200 non-members.

Register by February 27

Ages: 16 and older

Class limit: 10

SWIMMING LESSONS

YMCA lessons use a learn to swim progression from water

orientation to stroke development that meets the needs of

swimmers at all levels. Participants learn water safety skills

and stroke development in a fun and supportive environment

that emphasizes character development and physical fitness.

WATER BABIES: This class promotes water readiness activi-

ties for children and their parent or trusted adult. Parent and child swim lessons offer a positive and fun environment

to foster the parent/child relationship through water explo-

ration.

PRESCHOOL LESSONS (Ages 3-5)

Pike, Eel, Ray: These classes help young children become

comfortable in and around water and teach the basic strokes

and diving in the later classes.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONS (Ages 6-16):

Polliwog, Guppy, Minnows: These classes focus on basic

swim skills in the beginning to advanced strokes and swim-

ming in the later classes. Child must pass each class before

moving onto the next level.
