WELCOMING THE WORD

Jesus’ audience is now no longer his table companions, but the great crowds who were following him along the way to Jerusalem. These people can be left in no doubt about where they are heading if they stay with Jesus. Jerusalem will be the place of suffering, death and resurrection. So that no one is under any illusion, his first words are a Semitic expression of exaggeration, rather like we use when we really want to make a point, for example, about our annoyance with someone, saying: “I could kill her!” (“But I won’t really!”) When Jesus calls for “hate” of parents and family, he is not discarding his love command, but using a word that exaggerates the choice one must make in establishing priorities. Commitment to Jesus will involve putting him first in all our relationships. Life experience teaches us that one important choice often excludes others: to marry means to put husband or wife before parents; to allow our children their freedom as adults means not keeping them dependent on us; a decision for a single lifestyle means forgoing marriage. But no matter what our human relationships, says Jesus, Christians have to yield first place to him. We know how we can get into trouble by neglecting to read the small print on documents like our guarantees or advertisements for apparently wonderful bargains! Jesus wants us to be quite sure that we understand the “small print” of the gospel demands on his disciples. There are three conditions that disciples must be clear about. The first is to prefer intimacy with Jesus to all other intimacies; the second is to accept the cross – not only that of the ordinary, painful suffering that is part of being human, becoming sick, dying – but also the cross of the persecution, ridicule, and conflict that may come with discipleship; and the third is to surrender possessions and possessiveness. WANTED: YOUR INPUT AND EXPERIENCE - The Bishops’ Social Justice Statement this year is entitled: “A Place at the Table: Social Justice in an Ageing Society”. The Social Justice Group, here at Bulimba, would welcome input from parishioners to assist us in addressing this statement in a meaningful way. This topic raises many relevant issues for which the young and older have valuable experiences to share. We are keen to involve interested parishioners who would assist us in preparing an open forum or seminar some time later in the year e.g. mid to late October or early November. If you are interested in helping us to look at the justice issues being faced by the elderly, we would love to hear from you. We can be contacted via the Parish Office. Thank you - The Social Justice Group

FATHER PETER WEINEKE will again celebrate masses with us this weekend before Father Tom returns from annual leave next week. Thank you Father Peter, we have enjoyed having you with us.
