DEDICATION OF THE CHURCH

The spiritual highpoint of our Centenary Year is the celebration of the solemn feast of Sts Peter and Paul on Wednesday 29 June. It is most appropriate that we take this opportunity to dedicate the church building. It has of course been in use for the liturgy for 90 years. But in those days, a church could only be blessed (and not dedicated) until it was out of debt. The huge debt left in 1926 took a long time to pay down – first there was the Depression, then World War II. Now that the church has been restored and provided with a new marble altar, it is appropriate to celebrate the dedication.

To dedicate a church is to recognise it as a permanent place where the Church gathers to hear the word of God and celebrate the sacraments. It is a holy place because of what takes place there – God acts to save us as people are baptised, married or buried or, week by week, celebrate the Eucharist. The church building is a sign of the pilgrim church and reflects God’s kingdom already present on earth.

Our centenary is a time to discover who we are as God’s people and to discover the journey of faith we have followed in this place. When the Church gathers for Eucharist, it discovers itself as the Body of Christ. It is most important therefore that the centenary dedication of the church take place in the setting of the Eucharist. So we bless the font and are sprinkled with water to remind us that we are the Church in this place. After the Liturgy of the Word, we sing the Litany of Saints, rejoicing especially in the intercession of Sts Peter and Paul. We honour the relic of St Peter enshrined under the altar. The Prayer of Dedication follows which employs beautiful images for the Church: bride of Christ, vineyard of the Lord, living temple, city on a mountaintop… Here may your children be fed at the table of Christ’s word and Christ’s body… Here may the poor find justice, the victims of oppression true freedom… Here may the whole world enter with gladness God’s city of peace.

The bishop then pours the oil of Chrism on the altar to anoint it, and the pillars of the church are anointed at twelve places when crosses have been permanently fixed. Incense is burned on the altar and the entire church is incensed. Then the candles are lit and the church filled with the light of Christ. The Eucharist follows.

This solemn Mass of Dedication will be followed by supper in the parish hall at which the parish history – 100 Stories for 100 Years – will be launched, the justice project – JiM: Justice in Motion for Kiribati kids – will be presented, and the centenary cake will be cut. Please write it in your diary and don’t miss a wonderful night!

Very best wishes

RECESSIONAL HYMN

PARISH HYMN OF PETER AND PAUL Peter We praise you, Lord, for Peter, so eager and so bold: Thrice falling, yet repentant, thrice charged to feed your fold Lord, make your pastors faithful to guard your flock from harm And hold them when they waver with your almighty arm.

Paul Praise for the light from heaven and for the voice of awe: Praise for the glorious vision the persecutor saw. O Lord, for Paul’s conversion we bless your name today. Come shine within our darkness and guide us in the Way

Peter and Paul We praise you for Saint Peter; we praise you for Saint Paul They taught both Jew and Gentile that Christ is all in all. To cross and sword they yielded and saw the kingdom come O God, your two apostles won life through martyrdom.

Parish By all your saints still striving, for all your saints at rest, Your holy name, O Jesus, forever more be blessed. You rose our king victorious, that we might wear the crown And ever shine in splendour reflected from your throne.
