TOOL BOX TALK

Dangers of small falling objects small falling objects pose serious hazards in the workplace.

On most workplaces small objects are varied from hand held tools and equipment to small debris.

Small objects are high in number and size makes them even harder to control.

Even a 1 kg spanner dropped from a height of 4 meters will hit the ground travelling over 30km/h.

Controlling the hazards small objects create pose a number of challenges.

Without correct controls, small falling objects can:

• Cause injury and death • Damage property• Create tool damage • Damage equipment below • Lost time recovering fallen tools

In a report commissioned by the Ministry of Innovation & Employment, every year in New Zealand around 100 people die from fatal workplace injuries of which people struck by falling objects is the leading cause.

Employer obligations According to the publication,

Guidelines for the prevention of falls to meet the requirement of health and safety in the employment act 1992, all tools and equipment are to be attached by a cord unless another effective method is used to prevent a falling hazard. AS/NZS 4488 also requires all tools and equipment to be tethered when working at heights.

TrappingTrapping refers to retrofitting a connection point onto a tool. Most tools do not come with a secure attachment point built into the tool. In these situations, a secure attachment point must be created.

TetheringOnce all tools have a connection point, the appropriate tethering solution can be selected.

ToppingWorkers can transport equipment to heights by carrying or hoisting. There are a variety of weight rated containers available to safety transport.

UPDATE

Our New Head Office HomeIt’s been a long and frustrating journey from earthquake damage incurred at our Ferry Road offices back on the 4th september 2011 through to 19th september 2016 but we are finally here!

It’s a bitter sweet moment to leave our Head Office called “home” for over 20 years to new premises at 71 Sturrocks Rd, Redwood and I’d hazard to say it’s been one of the longest renovations Redpaths has ever been involved in!

Staff have had to endure cramped and restricted conditions for what seems an eternity and it’s a credit to them how well they have handled it all. We truly appreciate their efforts over a testing time for Redpaths.

New beginnings for the Head Office team and commencement of a new central branch for staff at the Ferry Road branch will also see them in new and innovative centre mid next year see some major changes and no doubt invigorate the group as a whole.

We will truly miss our old premise where some fond memories where initiated, created and implemented. But it’s a new day!

February 22, 2011, a day all Cantabrians will remember. Progress forward five years and 8 months following the significant damage sustained to the buildings at Ferry Road, and Redpaths Head Office is moving to a re-vamped building at 71 Sturrocks Road, Redwood. It’s been a long journey but finally we are here.

Staff have had to endure cramped

and restricted conditions for what seems like an eternity and it’s a credit to them putting up with those conditions. “We truly appreciate their efforts over a testing time for Christchurch and Redpaths.” It’s a bitter sweet moment to leave the CBD where Head Office has called “home” for almost 30 years to the new premises; and I’d hazard to say it’s been one of the longest renovations Redpaths has ever been involved in to get to Sturrocks!

And what about our presence in the CBD? Well the store will stay on at the

current Ferry Road site until a new purpose built warehouse is completed on the corner site of St Asaph and Barbadoes Streets, a mere 30 meters from the present site, with access from both Ferry Road and St Asaph Street. We see strategically that it is important to maintain a presence in the CBD and this new exciting building will be a great way to move forward.

We will truly miss our old premise where some fond memories were initiated, created and implemented….. But it’s a new day!

TECHNOLOGY

Hands up if you don’t have a SmartphoneI’m pretty confident in saying that most of our readers have some form of this amazing technology with you the majority of the day. Modern business life dictates that we have the responsiveness and productivity that these devices provide, whether it be in the workplace taking calls, ordering products, responding to emails and even posting updates to your social media.

We are all living in a digital world, and customers are requiring a digital approach to how we deliver our services, through the efficiencies and speed that the smartphone provide us with.

They are called ‘Smart Devices’ because the technology that they contain is pretty much the computing power of a high powered desktop from just a few years ago, yet portable and offering heaps more functionality that most people just used to dream of. To be able to video call friends and family all around the world, or check up instant pricing on a product, take amazing photos or use the device as a payment tool for business, the smartphone is a device that adapts to what we need on

the move – and is continually evolving. The creation of the ‘App Store’ and

the worldwide accessibility means that anyone can create an application limited by their imagination. This has spurred a whole new industry of app-only businesses that genuinely attempt to change the market, and provide services to consumers that are more convenient, lower cost and much more efficient – with little to no resource. This has created a mass digital disruption where traditional businesses are now looking as to how they can compete with this change. Prime examples of this would be companies like UBER and Airbnb.

So with the potential of a super computer in your pocket, the next

question is which phone is the best? It all depends on what you need it for, whether it is a work tool or like most is it your one device that balance work and home requirements? Basically, can you play Angry Birds on it?

Well maybe not the latter, but there are the two main camps – Apple iOS vs Android. Both have their strengths – however the app environment generally means that you need to pick one and remain in that ecosystem. Moving can be costly, as you have to repurchase all of your apps again!

Both systems are only as good as the handsets on which they live, and with the release of the iPhone 7 this week we will see the competition hotting up for features. Of the mainstream smartphones available today I’d definitely recommend taking a look at the following.

Page 15: TOOLS AND TOYS

Os: Android 6 | screen size: 5.5-inch | Resolution: 1440 x 2560 | RAM: 4gB |storage: 32gB |Battery: 2550mAh | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 5MP

With the S7 Edge we have the sleek looks of the previous generation, with the addition of a higher resolution camera, waterproofing, faster processing and a longer battery life.

Wireless charging means that you no longer need to plug in or carry wires with you. Expandable memory means that you can install more application and take more photos.

The curved screen adds depth to the display and makes everything look clean and crisp.

gOOgLE NEXus 5X

Os: Android 6 | screen size: 5.2-inch | Resolution: 1920 x 1080 | Memory: 2gB | storage: 16gB/32gB | Battery: 2,700mAh | Rear camera: 12.3MP | Front camera: 5MP

The Nexus is an option that is known as the pure Android phone, and always kept up to the latest build of the software. Recognised as the ‘Official Google Phone’ the software is snappy, and the performance of the hardware matches the bigger and more expensive Nexus 6 phone.

The memory of this phone is less than the others, however the price reflects this.

The fingerprint sensor adds that extra layer of security, especially for business phones.

APPLE IPhONE 7

Os: iOs 10 | screen size: 4.7-inch | Resolution: 1334 x 750 | RAM: 2gB | storage: 32gB/128gB/256gB | Battery: 1,960mAh | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 7MP

Apple have just announced the iPhone 7 featuring the new A10 pro-cessor and waterproofing (a feature they have never done before). They have removed the headphone jack and aim to have people using wireless headphones, however there is a converter in box just in case! Increased battery life and improved flash, with a redesigned home button make this a natural upgrade for those with an appreciation for all things Apple.

If you or your business need advice on what hardware technology and software are best for your business, and what security measures you should put in place, please contact any of the team at CodeBlue and we would be more than happy to help.

COMFORTABLE GRIP. EASy TO HOLD. GOOD HEAD ANGLE.

Cuts well. Really good quality tool at a reasonable price. As good as the Klein D2288 for a slightly better price.

RATINg: 9/10 TOPPICK

THE CHANNEL LOCK BRAND WERE A BIT STIFF OUT OF THE PACKET AND NEEDED TO BE FREED UP A LITTLE.

They felt good but still a little bulky in hand. Nice cutting action on these though. They feel robust and that they will last for long time.

RATINg: 7/10

ExCELLENT CUTTING WITH A NICE AND EASy GRIP.

It’s definitely a top quality tool and worth the money! The one I choose.

RATINg: 9/10 TOPPICK

A BIT STIFF FOR THE FIRST FEW DAyS. A BIT OF CHEMz MULTI SOFTENED THEM UP.

Good cut. They felt heavier in the hand than the CH338G. Obviously a premium tool. Worth the extra cost if you can afford it!

THE LAST PAIR TO TRy WERE THE KLIEN SIDE CUTTERS.

They were very stiff out of the packet, almost to hard to even use one handed. They feel great in my hand, not to bulky but very solid. Nice and easy to get in and out of my pocket and cut well too. Being a nicer fit in my hand I found these to be the easiest to work with.

VERy COMFORTABLE GRIP WITH A VERy SHARP CUTTING.

It doesn’t feel heavy but it took several days to loosen up. Quite stiff. It’s an expensive tool but a high quality one!

RATINg: 8/10RATINg: 8/10RATINg: 8/10

SURPRISINGLy GOOD CUT. (EVEN CUTTING NAILS!).

Easy to open from the beginning. Grips a bit to big & chunky compared to others. Not as much leverage in the handles. But they’re cheap so perfect for leaving in roof spaces

RATINg: 4/10

I FOUND THE VISEGRIP PAIR READy TO USE STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PACKET.

Nice free moving action and plenty of grip on the handle. May wear out quickly because of the play in the hinge. The bulky and grippy grips meant that I found these hard to get in and out of my pocket.

RATINg: 5/10

GOOD CUTTING EDGE BUT DEFINITELy NOT THE SHARPEST!

Grips are a bit too big, it was hard to get used to them, however It does allow for less hand fatigue. Great price indeed.

golfing Achievements – Founding member and captain of the Redpaths Timaru Twilight golf team.Has a nice golf bag.

The Main EventAfter some negotiations in the vehicle

on the way to the course, there was an agreement made that Nathan would be playing off a 29 Handicap for this challenge.

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon at the Temuka golf club as Darren approached the first tee, standing up tall and full of confidence, Darren lined up his first shot of the day.

Two lovely practice swings and it was game on. Our Master swung through his shot, topping the ball and sending it dribbling 20m down the field, into the bushes on the left hand side. Not a great start for our master.

After laughing for the next five minutes Nathan finally approached the tee, feeling happy he would have no problems surpassing the Masters tee shot. Still smiling our apprentice swings hard through his shot, catching the inside edge of his driver and hitting the ball at an acute angle into the middle of a bush 5 meters away. This was going to

be a long day…Half an hour later we had made it

to the second tee, a nice looking par 3 at about 190 meters long, we were all hoping the real golf was about to start. Darren steps up and hits a cracking shot straight down the middle. Things were looking up for the master and as Nathan hit his ball out of bounds, Darren had taken the lead.

A few holes down and with the level of golf improving, the lead had changed hands several times. Nathan was first on the tee and struggling to see which direction the hole was, Darren being the ultimate good sport decided he would help him out, telling him the hole had a dog leg around to the left. As Nathan was lining up his tee shot still a little unsure, he decided to question the master as to which way it went again, Darren holding up his right hand said once again that it was a dog leg to the left…

This was turning out to be a very even

contest. It hadn’t taken long to realise that our apprentice had played a bit of golf in his time and that a 29 handicap was well within his ability.

It was all coming down to the last hole, all tied up and everything to play for. Darren needed to win the hole by one shot to take the victory. Nathan was on the tee in the winner takes all hole. He lines it up, hit it hard down the field drifting into the tree’s on the right hand side. It was Darren’s for the taking but what did he have in him.

The Masters tee shot also drifted right into the tree line finishing about a meter away from Nathans ball. Both players hacking their balls through the trees in a display that mimicked the 1st holes efforts. Neither player was standing out, it was hard to tell if either of them wanted to win.

It all came down to the last putt, Darren had a 1m putt to win the game. A sloping green and the pressure on he lines his ball up, hits it and…

When BLS first started designing and manufacturing LED lights in 2008, we were often told “…LED’s just aren’t there yet”. Little was known about the technology and there was little confidence in it. We had our fair share of knock backs and industry criticism. Luckily for us, many of New Zealand’s best loved brands and essential services, from airlines to manufacturers, hospitals to supermarkets, understood our vision and put their faith in BLS with spectacular results.

Eight years on its hard to imagine a world without LEDs. Suddenly everyones an expert, importer or both and the manufacturers who pushed old technologies to market converted. The high bay market is flooded with LED products that make extraordinary claims, backed by misleading warranties and too often, simply don’t deliver. Well thats life, its hard to know who to trust.

So when the team at Redpaths suggested we design a sensibly priced LED high bay, for discerning professional contractors, we knew that to meet the market, we’d need to close the price-gap from our Specifier Series but we also knew our design team would refuse to compromise. They would want to use more LEDs, better quality components than competing products to ensure best in market performance. Its a philosophy that has delivered outstanding results for our corporate customers.

The final product would need to reflect our core values. It would need independent photometry to stand above the unsupported claims of competing products, a robust and functional design, that was simple to install and easy to adapt to third party motion and lux sensors. Ideally it would be DALI capable. A design specification that would in short set the benchmark for others to meet. What our lads in the back room have produced is a product that we call the PF150. A 150W high bay so packed with features its worth taking a serious look under the hood.

The PF150 features large array Gen 5 BLS UT LED that develop in excess of 157lm/W Ra85 at 5,000k @ Ta 25°C. Thats a phenomenal peak output of 23,500lm from a miserly 150 Watts and translates into 18,600lm at 100% L.O.R. Each of the 1,760 individual LEDs is carefully selected from within a three step MacAdam Ellipse. Two stage dehumidification during LED frame assembly, pure gold wire bonding, post photometric high temperature dehumidification and low temperature dehumidification prior to packing and an eight stage QC process during assembly results in a market leading L70B95 rating ≥65,000 hrs. Superb Ra 85 colour rendering with an R9 red value ≥10 provides light which is so rich and true, its perfect for grading fresh produce or industrial quality control.

The body of the PF150 is essentially an enclosed passive cell heatsink with a built in, easy access, gear tray. It provides a robust structure onto which the hardware is mounted and efficiently draws thermal load

away from the PCB. The extruded aluminium body is up to 54% more efficient at maintaining a low operating temperature than die cast UFO fixtures. The combination of large array; low drive current and efficient heat sink means that that the LEDs in the PF150 operate at Tj ≤70°C @Ta 25°C. Thats 44% below the maximum sustained temperature recommended following the marathon 10,000hr LM80 certification process. Low temperature operation of LEDs is essential for sustained and reliable performance. It means that when your customers roof gets hot in summer our products will sit within their design specification. Others either don’t care, don’t calculate or cap the warranty. We think its common sense.

The PF150 features the BLS IND-1C 150W LED driver a fully independent IP67 SELV driver with a level of specification far beyond competing products. It guarantees genuine flicker free light. Eliminating stroboscopic effects to ensure safe operation around spinning tools and machinery. It features surge protection, so essential to the long term survival of an LED high bay, we believe its irresponsible not to include it. In fact our driver has so many features its simpler to provide a list.

Of course you could just look on the web for a bargain or see who’s on sale this week but we think you’ll like the PF150. Its not the cheapest product on the market but then, to be fair, we never said it was.

Lets face it, LED High Bays are all the same, well, until you look under the hood.

The PF150 features the latest UT Chip from BLS. It delivers up to 157lm/W at Ra85 R9≥10 at 4,000 & 5,000K with an incredible L70B95 rating ≥65,000 hours. Its optimised to provide colour rich true tone definition with LED selection to within a three stage McAdam Ellipse.

LED FLOODLIGHTSest. 1966

Remote control comeswith every sensor model.Control time delays andlight sensitivity.

Our new LED Floodlight range is an attractive slim-line design, built to withstand New Zealand’s condi-tions. With an IP65 rating these fittings can be placed in almost any environment as long as they are not submersed in water.

We took into consideration the vast range of our domestic property sizes in New Zealand and can offer 3 sizes of LED Floodlights to cater for a every situation. Our LED Floodlights are available as a 10W, 20W and 30W model in both White or Black finishes which will accommodate most install requirements.

Adding to that, all Floodlight models are available with or without a microwave sensor. We know that a sensor is not needed in all circumstances and customers like to switch their floodlights on and off for example when used for outdoor entertaining.

When it comes to our sensor model we are streets ahead of what is currently on the market and offer a huge point of difference to the New Zealand market. All Floodlight models have a built in microwave sensor making them a slim-line fitting with no external bulky sensors. The sensors have been built into the front glass face of the fitting and are controlled and programed by a remote. This new technology instantly eliminates having to climb a ladder to change the light sensitivity settings on the back of the fitting as you would with traditional Floodlights.

FUSION WRAP...

Vynco Fusion gives you the flexibility to easily customise switchgear for your clients.

Vynco FusionAn infinite attention to detail separates great design from ‘just good’. In the world of architecture, we have become attuned to the idea that finishes of quality add immeasurable value. Designers and architects can now choose to specify slimline architectural components that complement the colour and styling of a room – for a cost that is similar to some standard, older wall fittings.

Easy Installation & FeaturesDesigned, engineered and tested

in New Zealand to NZ/Australian standards, VYNCO FUSION fits to any standard flush box and is retrofittable in most homes. Fusion can accommodate many current back-mounting mechanisms and all powerpoints are fitted with safety shutters.

An additional film is moulded into the VYNCO FUSION cover plate, increasing its resistance against scratches and chemicals. VYNCO FUSION is simple to order, fit and

remove; covers can be easily replaced. All products offer a five year warranty.

EngineeringThe Vynco engineering and design

team has worked closely with local interior designers, architects and electrical contractors to develop this innovative new range.

Specify Resene ColoursMatching splashbacks was an

inspiration for our colour-optioned switches. Cover plates can be painted

locally in New Zealand to match any paint colour. We are working with Resene to perfect a colour match from the full range of Resene’s colours. Once painted the plates will be quality controlled in Vynco’s Auckland or Christchurch premises and fitted with a fixing bracket. The ease of fitting the plates makes it simple to clip off and replace as trends and colour schemes change. Installing VYNCO FUSION helps future-proof your building project.

Home Lighting in a brand of Gerard Lighting NZ Ltd

Importance of Insulation Guards on IC and IC-4 Rated DownlightsEver wondered why some LED downlights have insulation guards fitted and others haven’t?

There is a very good reason reputable LED downlight manufacturers go to all the trouble and expense of designing and fitting insulation guards – to make sure the LED downlights will go the distance.

These guards are designed to keep thermal insulation from touching the heat sinks Extensive testing has shown a gap of as little as 12mm maintained between insulation and the heat sink will result in LED junction temperatures (the most critical point) being reduced up to 22°C.

This is hugely significant in terms of LED life and performance, or “lumen

depreciation” in lighting talk.Consider this excerpt from the article

“Lifetime of White LEDs” published by the US Department of Energy: “The primary cause of LED lumen depreciation is heat generated at the LED junction...Operating the LED at higher than design temperatures will significantly decrease useful life.”

If you look at the range of LED downlights on the market today you will find the majority DO NOT have insulation guards fitted. Why? Because they are imported exactly as they are sold in other countries where there are no IC or IC-4 rated downlights.

Home Lighting has been testing and designing insulation guards for more than four years and you will find there is only a very small number of NZ manufacturers or importers who have gone to the same trouble.

Choose wisely and ensure your customer get the life and performance from their LED downlights, and make sure they all have insulation guards fitted.

The Aisle, the Altar, the Hymnn Through the ages, men have been trying to unlock this

mystery: Why do their wives, who accept them just as they are before they get married, begin the quest to change their behaviour and life-style once their vows are exchanged? Finally, the riddle is solved. A social-scientist has arrived at this simple and logical explanation. When the bride, accompanied by her father, starts to walk slowly down the long aisle, she sees the altar at the end and hears the choir singing a hymn. Walking down the aisle, the conditioning process starts where the brain absorbs these three stimuli: Aisle, altar, and hymn. She becomes mesmerised as she continually reinforces these perceptions: Aisle, altar, hymn…Aisle, altar, hymn…Aisle, altar, hymn. And finally, as she stops beside the groom, the conditioning process is complete. She looks up at him smiling sweetly and keeps saying to herself: 'I'll alter him!’

n A man to a psychiatrist: “How do you select who should be admitted to your facility?” The psychiatrist replies: “We fill a bathtub with water and give the person a spoon, a cup and a bucket. Then we ask that person to empty the bathtub.” The man smiles: “Ah, I understand, if you are sane you would take the bucket.”

n A man wakes up in the hospital, bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, "Ah, I see you've regained consciousness. Now, you probably won't remember, but you were in a pile-up on the motorway. you're going to be okay, you'll walk again and everything, but...Something happened. I'm trying to break this gently, but the fact is, your 'old chap' was chopped off in the wreck and we were unable to find it." The man groans, but the doctor goes on, "you've got £9,000 in insurance compensation coming and we have the technology now to build you a new penis that will work as well as your old one did – better in fact! But the thing is, it doesn't come cheap. It's £1,000 an inch." The man perks up at this. "So," the doctor says, "It's for you to decide how many inches you want. But it's something you'd better discuss with your wife. I mean, if you had a five inch one before, and you decide to go for a nine incher, she might be a bit put out. But if you had a nine inch one before, and you decide only to invest in a five incher this time, she might be very disappointed. So it's important that she plays a role in helping you make the decision." The man agrees to talk with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day. "So," says the doctor, "have you spoken with your wife?" "I have," says the man. "And what is the decision?" asks the doctor. "We're getting a new kitchen".

n When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 degrees Celsius. The Russians used a pencil.

n Me: “Do you think it’s strange to talk to yourself?”

Me: “No.”

Common questions about LED

Debunking common LED Myths

MYTH ONE: LED systems cost too much The return on investment (ROI) for the use of LED lighting systems in an installation is surprisingly rapid when taking maintenance and energy cost savings into consideration. In many cases, economic payback can already be seen in less than two years. Additionally, the upfront cost of LED systems is continuing to drop rapidly.

MYTH TWO: Watt LEDs are brighter than one Watt LEDsPeople are used to looking at wattage to determine the output of a light source. However, the wattage of an LED is not directly comparable to either the wattage of a traditional light source or even from one LED to another. Therefore, light output, rather than raw wattage, is a key factor when looking at an LED source. So when selecting LEDs or LED fixtures, it is more about light output, than power.

MYTH THREE: LEDs last forever LEDs have a long source life, but like all light sources, they slowly fade over time. Ambient temperatures, electrical drive currents, and the effectiveness of cooling systems in the lamps and luminaires are all factors that contribute to lumen depreciation.

How does LED lighting stack up compared to traditional light sources and what should you look out for?

LED light in some cases provides a better value-for-money option. Here are some common questions around the benefits of LED compared to traditional sources.

Is it more energy efficient? LED lights are up to 5 times more than incandescent light sources.

Does LED last longer? LED sources have a long lifetime which means less replacement and maintenance requirements.

Is LED safer? LEDs provide illumination without emitting harmful infrared or ultraviolet radiation. Use LED fixtures in heat sensitive areas, near people, and tight spaces where conventional light sources could be dangerous or potentially damaging.

How durable is LED? LED sources are very durable and can withstand impact, vibration and other disruptions. This makes LED sources perfect for extreme environments and other environments where it may be difficult to install and maintain traditional light sources.
