INTRODUCTION

Throughout the music industry many people have passed through both directors and artists to create and mould the different styles that we now recognise.

In this PowerPoint I am going to pick out some of the best music videos, album covers and directors to show what they have created and bought to the industry.

BEST DIRECTORS

• Over the years many music directors have produced memorable music videos of all time. Although this is a preference on to what the ‘Best’ ones are I will point out the most noticeable on this slide.

• One of the most noticeable music director was Spike Jonzes. The videos he has created such as ‘Its Oh So Quiet’ by Björk and music video collaborations with Fatboy slim and Daft Punk ‘Da Funk’.

• Another well known director who created one of the most famous music videos in the noughties specifically 2008 was Jake Nava for the creation of Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ video. This video is very well known for its 3 only members seen dancing all of the way through the video in a white room, although simple it is very effective.

ITS OH SO QUITE

In ‘Its Oh So Quiet’ is one of Jonzes most well known videos. In this one he plays around with the different dynamic of the track going from dull slow motion clips, to quickly moving into large scale dance routines with colourful surroundings and then smoothly switching between the two again and again without a big transition gap.

As Jonzes videos usually have an odd element that makes them stand out a little ‘Its Oh So Quite’ is no exception. In this video this element is how we see normal everyday objects come to life like mail boxes or columns on a wall as if Björk is in a dream like state while singing this song.

DA FUNK

• This music video is another one created by Spike Jonze with another strange element to it. This being the main character is a human with a broken leg, but instead of having a human head it is that of a dog. There is no singing within this music video so it is more of a short film story where we simply follow the character around New York City as he is met by different situations and people.

BEYONCE -Single Ladies

● For another very famous modern music video I am going to point out a few points as to why this is seen as a great video created by Jake Nava.

● When creating this video it could have easily been very boring with just Beyonce and two other dancers dancing against a white background however the director used the simple lighting and great camera angles and smooth movement to help to viewer feel much more involved this is also emphasised with the camera circling also in the performance keeping the viewers attention.

● The music video is also slightly different because it involves dancing all of the way through the video. In the normal pop genre we expect to see a small section of a dance routine for example at the chorus.

MICHAEL JACKSON• For this album cover I am going to quickly

analyse Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album cover. For this cover the sizing hierarchy on this cover is clearly shown. In this example it can be seen with his name because it is the largest thing on the cover and the first thing that you see with the actual name of the album, ‘Dangerous’ being quite hidden. The actual album cover is not the typical one of a pop artist as it has had a lot of thought put into it with many of the objects being placed there for a purpose whereas most pop artist just have themselves right on the front with there name. Another very famous video that Michael Jackson is ‘thriller’ that he stared being well know for how expensive the video was a the time and also the dance routine.
