THE LION’S DEN Orange High School’s Newsletter Message from the Principal - Paul Lucas, Ed.D. Welcome to the 2015/2016 school year; things are off to a great start! On August 19 the Class of 2019 was welcomed by staff and upperclassmen with an all-day experience that included an introduction to their new courses, lunch with their Home Base, an opportunity to see the various clubs offered at OHS, and then participate in a couple of different activities. The rest of the OHS students ushered in a new school year the following day. The high school has been buzzing with a lot of activity, not only because the students have returned, but because of the amazing renovations taking place in the auditorium. The project should be completed and the doors opened in early December. There will be additional information about the opening of the renovated auditorium in upcoming communications. There is an abundance of research that supports the relationship between physical activity and adolescent cognition & achievement. In an effort to encourage students to maintain active bodies and minds, table tennis tables have been added to the OHS cafeteria for students to enjoy during lunch, as well as during other breaks in their day. Additionally, I am working with students in various Wood classes and Art classes to design and build corn hole sets. So far table tennis has been a huge success with many students actively participating during lunch, as well as after-school and during some study halls. Throughout the year, staff and administration will be exploring opportunities and intend to expand and enhance innovative instructional practices and learning experiences. The two-day, building- wide Intersessions, offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiential learning activities, will take place on Monday November 23 and Tuesday, November 24. Additionally, I have been working with staff and the PTA in order to arrange author visits and possible speakers for the students. It is sure to be another exciting year and it’s off to a great start. Please stay active in your child’s education, communicate with your child’s teachers, and please do not hesitate to contact me at any time as well. I appreciate all you do for the continued success of the students at Orange High School. Paul M. Lucas, Ed.D. Sep tember /Octobe r 2012 Newsletter Date

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! Each year the staff and administration try to offer new opportunities for the students of Orange High School. Due to the long-term success of the OHS Robotics program, it is now being offered to all students as an elective. Also offered for the first time this school year is AP Psychology, which has an incredible enrollment of 81!

Last year I traveled to Denmark in order to establish a partnership with a high school in Herning, Denmark. In October, OHS will welcome 27 students and 2 teachers from Denmark for a weeklong experience. In April, over two dozen OHS students and 3 staff members will travel to Denmark for a reciprocal experience. This 3-year partnership is the first in what I hope becomes an extensive international program for the students at Orange High School. I was recently selected by the College Board to participate in a trip to China in order to learn more about the Chinese education system. Additionally I will have the opportunity to try and establish partner schools for a possible student/teacher exchange program for the coming years.

Along with new opportunities in curriculum and instruction, the new school year brings new staff members. This year Orange welcomes the following staff to the Orange family:

William Derrick – Mathematics Ciara Mastin – English

Jeremy Ondo – Foreign Language Frank Peters – Science

Jean Vargo – Administrative Assistant to the Principal

Again, welcome to the 2012 – 2013 school year. I am always happy to talk and/or meet with you at any time to discuss your child, the educational programs at Orange High School, or anything else you might need. I look forward to another great year and please stay in contact with your child’s teachers, as well as the administra-tion and guidance staff.

Welcome to the 2015/2016 school year,

PTA is so busy getting activities underway for this year. We want you to support us.

$15 I do not want to bake, so here is the money I would have spent on those cupcakes.

$25 I do not want to hit up friends, family, and co-workers, so here is the money I would have spent buying wrapping paper.

$50 I do not want to walk, swim, or run in any activity that has the word “thon” on it. Here is the money I would have spent on my child’s “free” t-shirt

$75 I don’t want to attend any fancy balls, so here is the money I would have spent on a new outfit.

$100 I really wouldn’t have helped anyway, so here is $100 to forget my name.

$? I am making this donation to express my appreciation for having nothing to buy, sell, or do except fill out this form.

I am sure this is how many of us feel…by the time you see this you probably read this online. It is true that we ask year after year for your support – but we need your support so we can continue to fund our PTA to give back to the school.

Last year I asked for us to come together as a community and support our school. I believe we have a dynamic school and personally I would not want to be anywhere else. I wish we could pack our auditorium, gymnasium and football stadium for all our events. I am embarrassed when I look at our opponents and there are more of them than us. I challenge all of the readers of the Lion’s Den to come out and show your community spirit. Let our opponents and neighbors know that we rock. Attend the Board of Education meetings and learn what is happening at the District level. Let’s make a difference for our children and show them how we also care about our school. I think we need to make a change and take time from our personal schedule for our school.

This year we are planning to work on putting money towards speakers for Orange High School, supporting teachers through grants and scholarships, communicating via Lion’s Den, our school clubs, After Prom, Teacher/Staff meals, Senior scholarship, many senior activities, Student Government, Hospitality of many school sponsored events, and more.

We had our Annual Run with Pride on Sunday August 30 along with Train the Future. It was a great way to partner within the community and provide a fun filled Sunday at Orange High School. We always appreciate those that make the effort to help support the PTA. We want to give back to the school over $30,000. Please help us make this possible:

◊ Join the PTA,◊ Sign up at Heinens and Giant Eagle for the OHS,◊ Buy a yard sign to celebrate your students,◊ Drop off name brand ink cartridges at the Orange Public library,◊ Buy something new from spirit wear,◊ Try Juice Plus thru Carrie Rudow, ◊ Come to our joint PTA meeting at Cleveland Racquet Club on Oct 20th,◊ Attend Dec 3rd Girls Night Out at Glass Asylum in Chagrin Falls,◊ Purchase books /gifts at Barnes & Noble the weekend of Dec 4-6th.◊ Come to the school events and make new friends.

We want you to be a part of our team moving forward and making a difference for our children!

Orange High School Intersessions 2.0 Last November, over 550 students, staff, faculty, and administrators participated in a two-day intersession experience at Orange High School. This program was designed to provide innovative learning opportunities outside a traditional classroom setting and to increase overall student engagement in the learning process. This year, we plan to provide a similar experience, only bigger and better, and we need your help.

A Google Group has been created where students, parents, community members, and teachers can go to share ideas for future intersession experiences. This may include potential resources you may be able to provide, ideas, or experiences you would be willing to share with students. If you are interested in helping out, providing some ideas, or just simply lending a hand to a staff member who may have similar interests, please feel free to post.

We thank you in advance for your assistance and your support of Orange High School Intersessions 2.0.

Ohio’s State TestsInformation for Students and Families

Ohio’s State Tests measure student progress toward Ohio’s Learning Standards. They help us make sure every Ohio student receives a high-quality education. Student test results show that students have the knowledge and skills they need to move successfully to their next steps in education or a career.

Federal and state laws require state testing for specific grades and subjects.

WILL THERE BE STATE TESTS IN 2015-2016?Yes.

WHAT TESTING CHANGES MUST OHIO MAKE FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR?As part of the current budget law, the Ohio Department of Education will develop new tests in mathematics and English language arts with the assistance of Ohio educators. To build these new tests, the department will use its existing contract with the American Institutes for Research (AIR), a well-known test vendor. AIR currently provides Ohio’s science and social studies tests. The new tests will be:

· Shorter than those given last school year;· Given during one testing window; and· Given during the second half of the school year, close to the end of the school

year. High schools also may give end-of-course tests at the end of the first semester, and elementary schools will give the grade 3 English language arts test Nov. 30-Dec. 11.

The role of Ohio educators will be to help review the questions and test construction.

HOW LONG WILL THE TEST BE?Each test will be approximately three hours and will be divided into two parts. Districts will choose whether their students will take a test in two sessions or in one session.

WHY DO WE HAVE STATE TESTS?State tests are critical for measuring student learning and ensuring that all of Ohio’s stu-dents receive a high-quality education. The results from state tests provide the public with much-needed information about how all students are performing. Student test scores are the foundation of Ohio school and district report cards, which are designed to show parents, tax-payers and school leaders how well our students are performing. State tests are one way we identify schools and districts that need additional support and recognize those that have done a great job helping all students learn.
