The Vandekerkhove Family Foundation
touches the lives of Camosun’s Aboriginal
students every year. Since 2004, the family
has been a leading supporter of the
college’s Indigenous education programs.
The Allen and Loreen Vandekerkhove
Family Foundation Endowment, now at
a generous $110,000, provides awards
to more than 30 Aboriginal students
in Health and Human Service programs
annually.
This year, the Vandekerkhove Family
established the college’s first-ever
Indigenous Business Leadership Award,
providing $2,000 each to two students
per year in the Indigenous Business
Leadership program in Camosun’s School
of Business. Thanks to the Vandekerkhove
family for recognizing students who
contribute to their communities and for
encouraging them to become strong
Indigenous business leaders.
Camosun alumni are doing amazing things.
Take Dr. Brad Nelson. He is a 1983 university
Transfer graduate and this year’s Camosun
College Distinguished Alumni Award
recipient.
Brad graduated from Camosun with a keen
interest in biology and today he has a Ph.D.
from the university of California at Berkley
and is the founding Director and Senior
Scientist for the BC Cancer Agency’s Deeley
research Centre in Victoria. His research
focuses on understanding the immune
response to cancer.
“Camosun is where I found out how much
I love biology and science in general,” says
Brad. “I was led to cancer research because
of my mother-in-law’s experience with
ovarian cancer. I quickly realized we need
better early detection and treatment for this
disease.”
“This award is a huge honour to me, given
that my career path started at Camosun,”
says Brad. “I can’t think of a better place
to start your undergrad studies or complete
a diploma program.”
As part of his award, Dr. Nelson will
designate $1,000 of Foundation funds to
help students in health-related studies.
I chose Camosun for the smaller classes and more hands-on experience. I was graciously given a couple of awards, and they never came without much, much gratitude. Trying to live exclusively off student loans is tough! Camosun gave me a new start and a new lease on life. Thank you for the smiles and all
the help from everyone!

Michael Puszka is a Belmont High School grad and a first-year Civil Engineering Technology student. He chose Camosun because it was “close to home and provided small classes and hands-on experience.”
He’s also one of 17 local high school students who received this year’s $1,000 Camosun College / Thrifty Foods Entrance Scholarships. The award is given out annually to help create educational opportunities for lower island high school grads.
“The scholarship helped me be financially secure for my first year of college. It went toward tuition fees,” said Michael.
When he graduates, Michael plans to work for a local engineering company. “I was looking for a career that requires a lot of problem-solving, math and brain power. Also a job that is different every day. Camosun is helping me
get a faster start on my career.”
“It helps so much to receive a scholarship for
working hard in school. The reward of focus-
ing on school rather than on earning money
for school is huge.”

Camosun is revitalizing its Lansdowne
and Interurban campus libraries this year.
Thanks to a recent $4 million infusion
from the federal-provincial Knowledge
Infrastructure Program, the Foundation’s
Love Your Learning Library campaign has
been given a huge boost. Renovations
including 90 new computer stations, two
electronic learning labs, expansive study
and lounge areas, student project rooms
and more are set to begin this fall.
College employees, business leaders
and community members have also
helped raise over $184,000 for new books,
e-resources, computers and classroom
equipment. Many thanks to corporate

Farmer Family leads by exampleThe Farmer Family recently donated a $100,000 endowment to create awards recognizing Camosun’s top carpentry apprentices in each of their four years of study.
“The George and Elsie Farmer Legacy Award pays tribute to our parents for their contributions to this community and most notably, for their success with Farmer Construction,” says Murray Farmer.
Murray, along with this brothers Terry and Wayne, and sister Roslyn Stroshin, estab-lished the award in part to encourage other companies to invest in trades education.
“Camosun is the second largest educator of trades graduates in BC,” says Camosun Dean of Trades and Technology Dr. Tom Roemer. “More than 3,000 trades students study here and most stay in this region after graduation. The Farmer Family is part of our extended family. We thank them for their generosity and vision for the successful future of our region’s construction industry.”
donors Peninsula Co-op for their $120,000 to
support a 35-seat electronic learning lab at
Lansdowne, and to 1st Team Consulting for
their $20,000 contribution.
“Our new libraries will bring together state-of-
the-art technologies, expert help, a rich array
of information resources and quiet spaces
to study and reflect – a combination that
transforms dreams and ideas in realities,” says
Camosun’s Chief Librarian Sybil Harrison.
I completed my Business Administration Diploma in Accounting and now I'm working on my Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (BBA). I'm on track to complete it this year and earn my CGA designation. I would like to express my deep gratitude toward you for creating this award. It means a great deal to me and it will stabilize my financial
position as I complete my BBA.

Dr. Tim Walzak is investigating how real-time sensors incorporated into sport clothing can monitor performance and manage body temperatures for Canada’s elite athletes.
He believes this sport technology research will lead to breakthroughs in creating help-ful medical and assistive products for the general public.
Tim Walzak is the BC Regional Innovation Chair in Sport Technology at Camosun – the College’s first endowed research chair.
Through a $1.25 million investment from the Province’s Leading Edge Endowment Fund and $1.25 million to be raised from private donors, Dr. Walzak is working with Dr. Gord Sleivert, Vice President of Sport Performance for Canadian Sport Centre Pacific, to transfer sport technology concepts into viable commercial opportunities.
They work out of the new Sport Innovation lab (SPIN) at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE) at Camosun’s Interurban campus.
Smart textiles and materials for athletic wear,
recreation, rehabilitation and ergonomics;
thermal performance wear; pressure sensors
for gait analysis; force plate sensors; sleep and
eye tracking sensors; and, assistive devices for
the disabled are just some of the human per-
formance advancements being explored.
“We’re open for business,” says Tim.
“We want to talk to any companies, inventors
and investors who have ideas they’d like to
explore or products to test.”

your investment is more than just dollars – you are touching a life, providing inspiration and hope, for our students and for the future of our community.
We invite you to explore our report and share in our stories. Learn more about how you and others are helping dreams to be realized. On behalf of the Camosun Foundation – thank you for your inspiration and your generosity.
susan haddon Executive Director Camosun College Foundation
Touching Lives Together with the help of our community, the Camosun College Foundation touches lives and helps students succeed every day.
This year, the Foundation raised over $2 million and awarded in excess of $700,000 in bursaries, awards and scholarships to enable 1,135 students pursue goals which otherwise might have been unattainable. Other funds went to help purchase new classroom equipment, library books, new buildings, special projects, and so much more.
For 28 years now, the Camosun Foundation’s main role has been to connect people for the benefit of our students, their families and their communities.
Camosun College is a dynamic and invaluable community resource. Over 40,000 students have gone through our doors graduating in the arts, sciences, business, health care, human services, trades, technologies and sport sciences. Their new skills actively contribute to this vibrant province. At least 86 per cent of our grads stay to work in this region, while 97 per cent stay in BC.
