DUAL CREDIT CAREER TRANSITION PROGRAMS

Career Exploration & Career Zone

“Career exploration allows students to dig deeper into learning about careers in local and regional labour markets. Experiences are tailored to each student’s interests, which makes them feel involved and better informed for making fu-ture career and education choices.

Career exploration begins in middle school and is built on in Grades 9 and 10. This helps students to make decisions about:

Career and work options

High school program and course selection

Post-secondary requirements Some examples of career exploration activities include: Taking Kids to Work Day, Trades Sampler course, Junior Skills Day, and job shadowing. A Career Zone is a group of courses, certifications and work opportunities that BC high schools can develop to help students in Grades 11 and 12 get ready to pursue a career within a particular industry, while still meeting provincial re-quirements for graduation.

By working within a Career Zone high school students have the opportunity to:

Select courses that match their specific skills, interests and career goals

Acquire work experience relevant to those career goals

Obtain industry-recognized certifications Complete college or university courses for a career head start and valuable

post-secondary experience.”

Red Seal (Journeyman) Certification: In BC, more than 100 apprenticeship programs offer career opportunities and provincial certification. Trainees who success-fully complete an apprenticeship earn a Journeyman and Red Seal Certification (often referred to as a “ticket”). Certified tradespeople demonstrate a defined skill level in a trade or industry occupation, and those with certification typically earn more than those who are not certified. Journeymen with Red Seal designations are recognized across the country which supports the mobility of qualified trades workers between provinces.

SSA – Secondary School Apprentice: Students who are 15 or older can participate in the Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) program. SSAs need to find an employer who will hire them and commit to their training. Through hands-on work experience with a certified tradesperson, students develop practical skills and earn high school graduation credits. School counsellors, work experience coordinators, or career advisors can aid in a student’s registration in the SSA program by contacting the employer and advising them on how the SSA program works.
