PAY FOR PLAY LEVY
As Members would be aware we participated in a Trial Scheme over the past year at the request of Tennis Seniors Australia to determine whether Members preferred to pay a levy each time they played a tournament in lieu of paying membership fees. We also conducted an extensive Survey to gain Members’ opinions on this and received approximately 400 replies with no conclusive result either way. I would like to thank you, the Members and the Sanctioned Senior Tournaments (Clubs) for your support of the Trial and Survey. During the Trial period we have had many meetings with Tennis NSW and Tennis Seniors Australia regarding the need to reduce membership fees to try and attract new members. Members will appreciate the significant savings that we have been able to obtain from these meetings and are now able to pass on to you as a result of the co-operation and negotiations with Jackson Hills from Tennis NSW and Reg Trevaskis from Tennis Seniors Australia. Therefore from July this year we have agreed to revert to a small annual membership fee of $20.00 and regular round robin social tournaments will no longer need to impose a levy. The only Tournaments where a levy will apply are National Ranking Events and
State Championships and this levy is now reduced to $2.00 per player, per event. The savings would not be possible without Tennis Australia’s efforts to increase memberships throughout Australia and also for their financial assistance. Savings to you our Members are: Annual membership fee was $50, now it is $20; Joining fee was $15, now it is NIL; TNSW rego fee was $22, now it is NIL provided you are a Member of TSNSW
With these savings it makes Seniors’ Tennis by far the most affordable sport available. We are also embarking on a recruitment drive for new members, see details elsewhere in “Vetscore” and on our website, www.tennisseniors.org.au/nsw Yours in Tennis MICK BRUTON PRESIDENT TSNSW

2013 ITF World Championships
Held at Club Ali Bey, March 18 - 31
T eams played from March 18 - 23, and the Aussies were challenged by very
strong opposition. The best Australian result was to win Bronze in the Maureen Connolly Cup (W55). Other teams played hard – but were unfortunately denied a place in the winners’ circle. Some teams lost only one match, but were relegated to the lower placings in the playoffs. All players benefitted from their experiences, with many matches lasting several hours on the clay courts in Antalya at Club Ali Bey. SA’s Martin Richards who captained the Tony Trabert Cup team (M40), was kept on court for many hours two days running – a severe test to his stamina! Thankfully Marty emerged unscathed, and the team came in a creditable 6
th place.
Martin’s winning average was 80%. Some teams lost only ONE match, but because of seedings, they were relegated to the lower playoffs with no chance of making the final four. Others were able to make a good account of themselves and secured 5
th
place out of more than twenty teams. These were the Fred Perry (M50) and the Austria Cup (M55) teams in groups of 26 and 23 respectively. Both had 2-0 wins to finish the week on a high. The 50s, captained by NSW’s Manuel Radic, had 4 wins from 5 matches, their only loss to a strong Spanish team. They sealed 5
th place
with a 2-1 win over Germany on Friday and Great Britain
2
2-0 on Saturday. The 55s, which included our own Gary Thoroughgood, won all but one match, to the eventual winners, Great Britain, who knocked off the top seeds USA in the Final. Our other two Men’s teams, the 35s and 45s were not disgraced, in coming 11
th and
15th respectively. The 35s
actually defeated the #4 seeds (USA) in the Italia Cup – which was won by Spain against their 2012 nemesis France. The Dubler Cup boys won 4 and lost 2 matches for an average of 62%. Three of them including Greg Westwood (NSW) averaged 67% personally. Their last match was a 2-0 win over Romania. Our Women’s teams fought hard, mostly winning more rubbers than they lost – so they can stand tall. The 55s were seeded #4, which meant they faced #1 seeds USA in the semi. On Saturday they played France, with Suzy Ellis going down in a titanic struggle in 3 sets, but then Ros Balodis had a convincing 6-love, 6-love, followed by a straight sets win in the Doubles decider, 62 61 to Wendy Harrison and Helen Shea. Losing only 1 match the team average was 71%.Our Bueno Cup team (50s), led by NSW’s Brenda Foster, lost the playoff to Spain, finishing 7
th
out of 22 teams, after a creditable effort against Italy 1-2, who won the Bronze. USA beat France for the Gold medal. Our 45s, playing in the Margaret Court Cup finished in position 9 from 15, ahead of
Gt Britain who were seeded #4. Two NSW players Narelle Follington and Di Cassel featured in this team, with Di having a good record in Doubles play, sealing their two wins on Thursday and Friday with Julie Dybendahl in the deciders. The team had 2-1 wins against NED and SWE to end on a winning note. Our youngsters in the 35s (Suzanne Lenglen Cup) can be very pleased with their performances, winning more than they lost. In their match against the Silver medallists, France they went down in Singles but gave a good account of themselves in Doubles 4-6 5-7. It could have gone either way! That was NSW’s Jo Walter playing with Karen Kleverlaan (VIC). Jo’s efforts in Teams’ week contributed to her #3 seeding in the Singles and Doubles. She played with SA’s Adam Alessandrini in the Mixed, and they were seeded #2.
The Individuals were played from Sunday March 24 - 31.

A fter a fun filled two weeks at Ali Bey, six keen Aussies went to Llafranc Spain to play a Grade 2 tournament. Players were Chris O’Mara, Karen Pearce (QLD), Greg Westwood and myself (NSW), Wendy Harrison, Sue Thomas (VIC); we six became seven when we arrived as Wayne Cowley (VIC) met us there. Llafranc was very beautiful, with lovely people but the weather was extremely cold. The locals kept telling us
‘it's not normally like this’ .......we are still not sure if we should believe them however the day after the tournament finished the weather was sunny and warm. All the Aussies did well as we were in numerous finals. Chris and Greg made mince meat of both a German pair in the semi and a Spanish pair in the final. Of the three pairs in the Mixed, we had one win apiece, with Greg and I winners as we had a straight sets win over Chris and Wendy and a three-set match against the Belgian pair. All three matches displayed fantastic tennis. We had a great week, cheering for the Aussies each time they played. We also enlisted Juan and Gaby Los Santos as honorary Aussies as they travelled with us to Llafranc and supported us well.

Robyn’s Moat How about this? During the
tournament in Ulladulla this year a
report came through that there had
been a severe storm in the vicinity.
Lightning struck a farm some
distance away, and killed a prize
bull! Plus 3 cows in the same
paddock. Pity the poor farmer.
We have heard of tennis players
switching to Golf, but what about
Croquet? Lesley Easton, of Port
Macquarie has found a niche in this
game, and has travelled the country.
She played in the Masters Games in
Adelaide, winning both Singles and
Doubles. Her friends from ACT,
Wilma and Brian Bingley had a
game with “home-made” mallets at
Bookham, but Lesley was not
impressed with the quality of their
equipment; Lesley plays with a
“gold embossed” mallet!

Congratulations to those young “Seniors” returning from Club Ali Bey,
Turkey and Llafranc, Spain. There were some great results, with many of
them performing a “personal best”. Di Cassel wrote a report from Spain
where there were 7 Australians competing, plus 2 honorary Aussies from
Malaysia, Juan and Gaby Los Santos. (See below)
So sorry to report that Peg Hoysted lost her 87-year-old sister recently.
Peg has been very appreciative of all the kind expressions of sympathy
and beautiful flowers from friends in Tennis Seniors. Peg said that the
service at Palmdale was a beautiful celebration of her life, with an 11 year
-old great grand-daughter speaking most eloquently.
ACT’s celebrations for their Centenary include the award of
“Sportswoman of all time” – and guess who was selected? She has
represented Australia in Squash and Hockey in the 60s and 70s, and has
since turned her hand to Senior tennis where she has won World titles as
well. A quote from the April issue of “The Senior” by Chief Minister
Katy Gallagher: “Heather McKay is a role model for the highest
achievement by women in sports…” Heather was chosen from a list of
Australia’s top 100 sportswomen of all time. Anyone who has met
Heather will attest to her friendliness and congenial personality – and it’s
great to have the opportunity to witness such exceptional ability, talent
and humility in one whose achievements are so remarkable.

I joined the Vets
in 1996 after a
friend suggested
it might be a
good thing to
do. At the time I
did not know
what this
organisation
was all about
except that there
was a social
tennis event held each month in Sydney.
Attending these social events I came
across many players I had not seen for
about 25 years.
It took till 1998 when I played in my
first Australian Vets Carnival in Albury/
Wodonga to discover what the Vets was
all about. Since then I have played in the
last 16 Carnivals held all around
I am one of the
new-starters on
the Committee
and joined after
thinking for
some time that
perhaps I should
try to contribute
to the ‘running
of the show’ as
I have enjoyed
the benefits of the organisation for many
years. A little nudge from Robyn helped
with that decision. Experience gained
from being on the Committee of the
Southern Districts Tennis Association
for ten years has been helpful in
understanding the organisational side of
the Committee work and has impressed
on me the importance of having people
willing to put in time to make the
organisation successful.
I play in as many weekend events as I
can “take the Friday off work” to get
away to, and I try to make it to a more
distant tournament once a year, in
Mildura. I think the Annual National
Teams’ week is the most fun, social (and
exhausting) event on the tennis calendar
and encourage every tennis player to
participate, particularly the new
members to Seniors. Some of my
dearest continuing friendships were
made at my first National Teams’ week.
Maureen Bartels
I have been on the executive of North
Western Tennis Association as a
Committee person for a number of
years and the last five years as a Vice
President. I have managed and run the
District Championships for 3 years ,
competing in tournaments in Australia
and also ITF World Seniors for the
past 22 years. In my younger days,
under the watchful eye of my father, I
competed internationally - playing in
Grand Slam Tournaments, reaching
the semi –final of the French Women’s
Doubles, with my sister Gail and ¼
finals in Wimbledon & Australian
Women’s
Doubles.
I have run a
tennis
business,
worked as a
Secretary in
the
Insurance
Industry
and also
Secretary to
the
Managing Director of a computer
Software Company. I am currently on
the Committee of Longueville Tennis
Club and Tennis Seniors NSW and my
duties include those of a State and
National Tennis Selector. I will soon
represent Australia at the ITF World
Seniors’ Championships, for the
twenty third time, since winning my
first title, the 40WD in Barcelona in
1993.
Carol Campling
I was introduced to Seniors tennis by
my old school mate Ernie Young &
started at the Nationals on the Gold
Coast in 2010 where I met & played
singles against Dennis Kronk & we
soon formed a doubles combination.
Dennis played very little doubles in
Toowoomba and I had played little
singles so we were able to learn from
each other. I play 10-12 National,
State and Country tournaments each
year generally playing doubles with
Dennis and mixed with Sara Goddard,
May Howard, Wendy Gilchrist & Ros
Hand depending on the location.
I am a Civil Engineer still working
part time and grew up playing soccer,
cricket, golf and athletics. I took up
tennis after quitting soccer at age 42
and currently captain a Men’s
Saturday Badge team at Love 'n'
Deuce in 1.3 and am the Club Captain
at Hunters Hill grasscourt club.
Having worked in many parts of
Australia I love getting around the
states to as many of the stronger
tournaments as possible. My basic aim
in tennis and every other sport I've
played is to
compete
against the best
competitors I
can find.

Australia and enjoying success in

At other times I’ve played in up to 9
Country and NRT tournaments, State,

each year and am currently ranked one
in Australia and 8 in the World in my
age group. I have been selected to
represent Australia on eight occasions
at World Championships since 2003,
captaining the winning Jack Crawford
Cup Team in New Zealand in 2007
and a member of the winning Team in
2009.
I have been a member of the TSNSW
Committee of Management since 2009
the last two years as Vice President.
Previous Tennis administration has
included;
Secretary, Strathfield District TA

I joined Tennis
Vets, as it used
to be called, in
1992 and
played in my
first Australian
Teams’ event
in Canberra in
1995. I have
now played 19
consecutively
since then and
have even had the pleasure of being a
member of several winning teams.
I somehow found the time to play in 23
tournaments one year and nearly 20 in
several other years which enabled me to
meet many of my tennis friends and
tournament directors from all around the
state.
After retiring from full time
employment in 2002, most of which had
been spent as a professional engineer, I
joined the committee in 2003 as a
means of helping other new and not so
new members enjoy the Tennis Seniors
scene as much as I have.
In 2004 I was talked into nominating for
Treasurer by the Secretary at that time
and have held that position in addition
to that of Men's team selector ever
since. Arthur Olsen
I joined Tennis
Seniors in
2001. I try to
play several
tournaments a
year with the
highlight being
the Australian
teams’ event
and Newcastle
Mixed teams in
June... played
ITF Worlds’ in 2001 in Miami Florida. I
became a committee member approx. 5
years ago. I am manager/coach of Dural
Tennis Centre.
Craig Edwards
20 years ago I played my 1st Seniors Tournament at Gloucester after a break from Tennis for 25 years and since then have played in all the Team Carnivals in January each year. I try to play in as many country events as possible, and consider myself fortunate to have met many new friends in the process, as well as renewing old friendships. There are several strong social groups around and I am very lucky to have the opportunity to play with them 3-4 times a week. Tennis is a sport that can be played at any age and I have renewed acquaintances that go back over 50 years. As President of TSNSW it gives me a chance to meet many new people and also allows me to give a little back to Tennis Seniors of which I have appreciated being a member for all these years.
Mick Bruton
Franklin Road Tennis Centre is my
home court, and I have been a member
of Tennis
Seniors since
1989. For many
years I was the
President of
Tennis NSW,
but am now
free to assist in
the Tennis
Seniors
Committee. I
have enjoyed
playing many seniors’ events including
the Mixed Teams at Newcastle and the
National Teams’ event in January.
John Whittaker
Joined in 1989, but knew nothing of
what “Vets” was all about, so I waited
until 1991 to play my first Australian
Teams’ Championships in Newcastle. I
played every year until 2012, when I
was on doctor’s orders to stay in
Sydney. What fantastic experiences
they all were! I also loved going to
many weekend Country tournaments,
meeting lots of lovely people and
having great fun!
I became Vetscore editor in 1996, and
was elected onto the General
Committee in 2001. I have enjoyed the
role of Secretary since 2009.
Through my friendships in Tennis
Seniors, and my No. 1 man Arthur
Olsen, I have managed to survive some
pretty stressful treatment for Multiple
Myeloma (cancer in the blood – due to

The following is an extract from the Executive Update by Reg Trevaskis…see the entire document on www.tennisseniors.org.au World Championships
The results of our participation in the Seniors World Champs in Turkey have been documented on our
website, but all of our teams performed admirably with our best performance coming from the Womens 55’s who finished 3
rd from 16 teams. In the Individuals, congratulations to Ros Balodis and Leanne Swaysland who won
the Women’s 50 doubles in an all Australian final, and Brenda Foster who won the 50 mixed with a partner from Great Britain.
Closing dates for the Seniors teams in 2014 will be 11th October. Originally we had set the closing date for
Super Seniors 2014 as the 25th April, but in view of the comments above regarding airfares etc. we have now
revised that date to the 14th
March after the Claycourts .
We are very interested in bidding to host a World event in either 2015 or 2016 when the revised 3 section
format is in place. A possibility we are considering is the Young Seniors at Melbourne Park, and this is being discussed with TA.
Regarding uniforms, TA are currently in negotiations with a new supplier for uniforms for all Australian teams,
and we will have input on the design for Seniors when the contract is finalised. There is a strong possibility that green shorts for the men, and green skorts for the ladies, will be made available for Super Seniors this year. Gail Bates has done a very interesting record on players’ participation in World team events as an Australian representative. The player who has represented Australia more than any other is Carol Campling – 22 times including 6 as Cup winners. Well done Carol!! Amongst the men, the “leader” is Andrew Rae with 21 caps (including 7 wins). Others of note are Bob Howes and Bob McCarthy with 20, and Peter Froelich with 18.
IPIN is here to stay!

Inter Club Matches add value to Tennis Seniors’ NSW Membership
The Committee of Tennis Seniors’ NSW has been looking at ways to encourage more social groups of
tennis players within the tennis fraternity to organize “friendly” tennis days with other like minded
Clubs. In pursuance of this objective, Committee Members Graeme Sticka and Greg Scott (who are both
members of the Northbridge Tennis Club on Sydney’s lower north shore) approached the Club, as well
as Tennis Seniors’ NSW President Mick Bruton (from The Hills Seniors’ Social Tennis Group at Dural)
with an idea to have a “friendly” match.
As a result, on 9 April 2013, a great social day of tennis was held at
the Northbridge Club, whereby twelve players from each side were
paired up and played a format which provided for each pair to play
each pair in the opposing team. Sets of 8 games with short deuces
ensured that play was continuous and robust.
The Northbridge Club to its credit got right behind the concept and
not only provided the courts, balls, and some liquid refreshments, but
also organized several of its “non-playing” members to assist the
home team members in supplying lunch for the visitors.
Whilst rain threatened throughout the morning, several sets were
completed prior to a shower which halted play, whereupon it was
decided to bring lunch forward. Following lunch, tennis resumed much to the joy of those who had not
over indulged in the food and accompanying beverages.
Following the event, Tennis Seniors NSW President Mick Bruton commented on the great spirit of
goodwill that was generated through the conduct of the day. “This is what Seniors’ tennis is all about”,
he said. “Wouldn’t it be great if groups of seniors that play amongst themselves each week would get
involved in organizing such days with groups in other localities. It would certainly add value to tennis
within Tennis Seniors and help to encourage players to enjoy the company of others with whom they
don’t normally get to associate”, he concluded.
Both Clubs that participated have indicated a determination to make the day an annual event. In
addition, to also use the experience of the day to seek out other groups who would like to play a similar
format at some mutually agreeable time throughout the year. Twenty six players and ex-players ended
up arriving for lunch and many “tall tales and true from the legendary past” were traded over a glass or
two. Pictured are the two teams which made up the day, as well as some individual groups of players
photographed before their sets.
Any tennis Seniors’ groups that would like assistance in organizing a similar day should contact Tennis
Seniors’ NSW through its Secretary, Robyn Castle. A member of the Committee will then be appointed
to assist your group in making it happen.

“ G l o u c e s t e r g l o w s ” w a s t h e
pronouncement of one of the 125
players that competed in the Annual
Gloucester Seniors Tournament on the
weekend. And glow it certainly did.
Over 300 matches were decided in
perfect Autumn conditions. The natural
beauty of the area and the friendliness of
the local people bowled over the
visitors.
Local players Brett Ashton, Tom Power
and Paul Kellehear were in fine
company with the best of Tennis Seniors
players entering the event. NSW
Champion, Chris Gillis from Manly had
a convincing win in the 35-40 Men’s
Singles overcoming an exceptional field
including Peter Doohan from Nelson
Bay who was forced to retired due to
injury.
Natasha Melville from Sydney took out
the 35-40 Women’s Singles, conceding
only one game through the entire event.
Gloucester District Tennis Association
Life Member, Margaret Wayte,
displayed her exceptional tennis skills
and took out the 60 Ladies Doubles
with her regular partner Mary Gordon.
The tennis played was exceptional,
lending itself to a style and grace that
has disappeared from the international
Grand Slam and ATP tournaments.
The Committee is very grateful to
everyone who donated cakes and
slices to the Club for the duration of
the event, and to those who donated
the delicious desserts served to the
players on Saturday night during the
dinner hosted at the clubhouse. The
feedback was very positive.
Thanks also to the volunteers who
worked tirelessly in the kitchen and
canteen, especially Merilyn Relf,
Lorraine Adams, Di Montague, Chris
Pearson and their teams. As always,
Neville Holstein, Kevin Ninness and
Brett Ashton had the courts looking
great and playing beautifully.
Lorraine Forbes, as always ran a
professional and organised event from
the tournament office.
Of course these events cannot happen
without the help of generous sponsors,
Darrel’s Gourmet Butchery (thanks for
the delicious roasts on Saturday night),
Zac’s Glass, Adam’s Upholstery,
Whispering Beauty, Gloucester
Soldiers Club, Townsend Electrical
and Gloucester Bowling Club.
Ruth Johnson.
A great job on the entries, draws and
results was done by Ruth, who also
found time to take some interesting
photos, including some great action
shots. Sincere thanks to all the
Gloucester folks for another
memorable tournament! RC

C ougars’ Fundraiser
Tournament at Easter in
Newcastle was again a huge
success – both tennis-wise
and socially. The funds raised were once
again near the $10,000 mark, and Frank
Kitcher is proud to announce that the
progressive total is now almost $70,000
for the Cancer Council, over the 7 years
he has been running it. Frank is most
appreciative of the support from
Newcastle businesses, Politis
Investments in particular, who have
been extremely generous throughout.
This year 135 players participated -
including some 18-35s who were
especially invited to participate for the
first time. They were welcomed by
those who played against them. We can
call these youngsters “juniors” who
were aged 18 to 35. The experiment
worked well, and many of them vowed
to come back again next year, especially
since some of them will soon be turning
35, and can join Tennis Seniors
officially! This may be a positive step to
arrest our declining numbers and
accelerate an increase that will allow us
to appeal to sponsors in the future.
From Craig Edwards:” it was quite
strong and even grouping in Div 1,
with no weak pairs...I did enjoy
playing the younger ones, it made the
game a lot more solid. I like the idea of
bringing the younger ones in to boost
numbers ‘n’ strength and give them a
taste of the social side of seniors’
tennis... the younger ones had a good
attitude on the court.. overall a fun and
enjoyable weekend of good tennis.”
Kerri Summerhayes commented: “it
was great to have a Ladies’ Singles
event actually run and the standard
was quite high. I never mind if the age
groups need to be combined to allow
an event to run.
The Doubles was a good standard with
all pairs being capable players. I
didn't play any juniors but would not
mind if juniors were needed to fill the
draw. This was a well-run weekend
with very friendly committee and
players.”
Kaye Nealon’s words: “Good Friday,
the Men’s & Ladies singles were
played. Stef Asprey travelled up for
the day and won. My sister Kerri was
Runner Up. The 10.30am start was
helpful for people who want to leave
home that morning, saving a night’s
accommodation costs. Dean
Robertson won his group in the Men’s,
with Antony Hook Runner Up.
This year I only played Sat & Sun
afternoon. All the events were well
supported though, and Kerri & I won
the Doubles. It’s great to see that
most of the original Newcastle players,
from 4 or 5 years ago still
compete . (Stephanie Bowler was
making a comeback.) Dean and I
came third in the mixed after having 4
or 5 really enjoyable sets.
There were raffles etc during the 3
days, lots of local items being donated
and at the final presentation Frank
said that overall, including other fund
raising during the year, $10,000.00
was raised for Cancer
research. Loretta, Carol and Neville
all gave a helping hand which was
much appreciated by players and
committee alike.
We travelled home on the Monday so
once again it’s perfect for all of us, we
could beat the traffic.
Perfect weather too!”
