Falar sobre esportes, em especial sobre atletismo, implica necessariamente a mobilização de conceitos matemáticos tais como as noções de espaço, tempo, massa com suas medidas, proporcionalidades, comparações. Mais que isso, no contexto da competição lidamos fortemente com conceitos de razões, proporções, médias, desvios padrões, estimativas e probabilidades, construção, leitura e interpretação de dados organizados e representados em tabelas e gráficos, dentre outros conteúdos matemáticos.
