Tracing a fad

Introduction

The aim of this assignment is to trace a fad using the EBSCO database and develop a

graph in Excel format showing the results. I choose the term “Marketing” and below

you can see the analysis by decade of the number of times the term Marketing is

referred in EBSCO Business Source Premier. All the data information used for the

design of the graph can be found in Table1 in Appendices.

According to the data collected from EBSCO database and more specific from

Business Source Premier, the diagram shows the growth of Marketing term through

The term Marketing shows up for first time in 1887 and since then has been growing

really fast, especially during the last decades.

The graph shows that Marketing term the first decade 1887 – 1896 was referenced

only twice based on Business Source Premier Abstracts.

1897 – 1906

Having reached a low towards the decade 1897 – 1906 with only one reference, in

1907 started rising and remain stable all over the decade.

1917 – 1926

In 1917 – 1926 Marketing had a small raise and cited 78 times which was a big

improvement for the period.

1927 – 1936

During the decade 1927 – 1936 the references about marketing was almost doubled

and shows a significant increase.

1937 – 1946

The use of the term “Marketing” continued growing rapidly at this decade and the

term was used five times more than previous decade.

1947 – 1956

During the decade 1947 – 1956 a slight increase is visible and the use of the term

Marketing remained stable.

1957 – 1966

In the period 1957 – 1966 a considerable grow is visible in the diagram as the times

that the term Marketing used was doubled.

In 1967 – 1976 a significant increase in the use of the term Marketing appears in the

graph and from this decade an upward trend was recorded.

Page 4: Tracing a fad.docx

1977 – 1986

A sharp increase is visible in early 80s and according to the data the term Marketing

was referenced 11,387 times in this decade.

1987 – 1996

The most obvious trend in the graph is that from 90s marketing term increased sharply

over the period.

1997 - 2006

As an overall trend it is clear that this decade is the peak of referencing. The times of

reference of the term increased fairly rapidly and counted 194,381.

2007 - 2012

Although is not a decade, the last six years the term was used 108,238 times and in

the end of the decade will be greater from the previous decade.

In conclusion, the graph shows the rapid growth of the Marketing term through

decades from the first time was used back in 1887 until 2012. As we can see, the term
