SafetyGeneral safety information

The safety practices described in this manual are meant as guidelines for safe operation under most conditions and are meant to supplement any safety rules and/or laws that have been established at your worksite.

WARNING: Read this entire manual prior to conducting the maintenance procedures described in this manual. Failure to follow these instructions could result in injury or death.

Signal wordsThroughout this manual are statements preceded by a special attention symbol: “ ”. The symbol is used with the following signal words to attract your attention to information regarding safety issues.

WARNING: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in serious injury or death.

CAUTION: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.

NOTICE - DAMAGE ALERT: Indicates information that should be acted upon to avoid significant equipment or machine damage that could result in unplanned downtime or maintenance.

Additional signal words that are not preceded by the attention symbol are:

IMPORTANT: Indicates information that possesses special significance to the maintenance procedures.

TIP: Indicates information that may simplify the maintenance procedures or make your job easier.

Personal safetyWARNING: When performing the work described in these instructions, use proper personal protection equipment to help avoid

injury. Always wear hard hat, gloves, safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection and fall protection that complies with regional, national and worksite requirements (e.g., OSHA, MSHA) when working with this equipment. To avoid injury to bystanders, keep them a safe distance from the work area.

Additional safety procedures and important informationWARNING: ESCO Track Pro hardware contains permanently installed lithium metal batteries. The cell chemistry is

Lithium-Thionyl-Chloride. The product packaging is acceptable for air cargo shipments of lithium batteries contained in equipment. If the product is repackaged it is the responsibility and liability of the shipper to ship products according to all applicable shipping laws and regulations for shipping lithium batteries.

WARNING: ESCO Track Pro hardware contains a permanently installed lithium battery. Lithium batteries pose a fire, explosion and severe burn hazard. To reduce the hazard risk, lithium batters are NOT to be recharged, disassembled, heated above 100°C (212°F), incinerated, punctured or contents exposed to water. DO NOT strike or subject Track Pro hardware to strong impacts; and DO NOT attempt to disassemble the Track Pro hardware.

WARNING: If welding or other hot work needs to be conducted near the Track Pro hardware, the hardware must be removed from the mounting bracket. DO NOT puncture the hardware casing during removal.

WARNING: Disposal of the Track Pro hardware must comply with applicable electronic e-waste disposal requirements.

NOTICE – DAMAGE ALERT: Isolate the machine’s electrical system prior to any welding. Failure to do so could result in serious damage to the machine’s on-board computer system.

Track Pro hardware installation

These instructions contain detailed information for installation of the ESCO Track Pro transmitting hardware (GPS tag) for asset tracking and management. The Track Pro GPS tag can be attached to any valuable asset for management using the Track Pro app. The instructions include: selecting a mounting location; installation of the mounting plate; activating and installing the GPS tag; and installing the protective metal casing.

IMPORTANT: The following steps show an excavator bucket for instructional purposes but the Track Pro system may be used on vehicles, shipping containers, generators, light towers, dumpsters and other valuable equipment.

Step 1

Select a mounting location that provides an unobstructed position with the GPS tag facing skyward and isolates it from damage. A horizontal mounting position lying flat is preferred. Refer to Figures 1a and 1b (Track Pro-S GPS tag shown). Vertical mounting positions may reduce system performance; and underside mounting positions will not function at all.

Mount on a flat metal surface that can be welded. The recommended mounting area size is 130 mm x 90 mm (5.0 in x 3.5 in). The mounting location must be protected from impact, wear, flame, sparks, submersion and heat in excess of 85°C (185°F).

Step 2

With the base plate location determined in a protected location as shown in Figure 2a, mark the location for cleaning and removal of paint down to base metal in the area of the welding slots. Refer to Figure 2b. For an excavator bucket, just outside the mounting lugs is a good location. See page 6 for alternate locations and reference the drawing on page 7.

Step 3

Attach the base plate by using a 6 mm (0.25 in) fillet weld 25 mm (1.0 in) long on both sides of each welding slots. Refer to Figure 3. Any weld or spatter must be ground smooth to the surface of the base plate so it won’t interfere with the sending unit installation. Allow the welds to cool before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4

To prepare the Track Pro-S GPS tag for installation, remove the yellow magnetic strip. Refer to Figure 4. The Track Pro-S unit will not function if the magnetic strip is not removed.

Step 5

Each GPS tag comes with a bar code for identification. Refer to Figure 5a (Track Pro-S).

Attach using a fillet weld down each side of both

base plate slots

Open the Track Pro app on your mobile device and select: Set Up Track Pro Device; then select the type of GPS tag unit being used. This will activate the mobile app to scan the bar code on the GPS hardware. Refer to Figure 5b.Then enter the requested data. For complete instructions, refer to the help menu on the Track Pro app. You may also make a quick reference record of the asset information in the chart on page 6.

Step 6

The tag has pre-installed adhesive tape on the back that can be used to adhere it to any clean surface above 10°C (50°F). Peel off the adhesive tape backing. Secure the tag by positioning it on the clean base plate and applying firm pressure. Install the Track Pro metal casing over the tag using the two 3/8 in. hex head cap screws provided. Refer to Figure 6.

NOTICE – DAMAGE ALERT: DO NOT paint or cover the Track Pro hardware with anything other than the supplied metal casing. Paint or an additional covering will result in poor product performance and decreased battery life.

Alternate Track Pro mounting locations and positioning

First alternate mounting option

If there is less than 100 mm (4.0 in) outside of the bucket lugs, the Track Pro GPS tag can be mounted just inside the bucket lugs as shown below. The first alternate mounting location and orientation is only to be used when there is less than 100mm (4.0 in) outside of the bucket lugs.

NOTICE – DAMAGE ALERT: When mounting between the lugs, the Track Pro unit must be positioned on the upper portion of the bottom plate. Mounting above the bottom plate may result in severe damage to the Track Pro unit from impact with a hydraulic coupler.

Second alternate mounting option

If there is not enough space in either the primary or first alternate mounting locations, a second alternate option is shown below.
