Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: Another dramatic end to the month weather wise, with major disruption to rail services in Scotland on the 28th following flooding throughout England & Wales in the previous week. Hopefully no-one has been adversely affected by the flash floods and thunderstorms, as captured by the apt cover photo taken in the middle of the day !! Fortunately we missed the weather travelling north but it is a bit surreal going from getting sunburnt on the south coast to having the heating on in cool north-east Scotland...in between, havoc !! British summertime, we love it.

There a number of new liveries covered this month and too many to include in Revised Liveries so look out for 59205 and 56094 in Traffic & Traction News, 09017, 57605, 91110 and 92032 in the Railfest Report and 3783 (08616) not covered before in Preservation Open Days & Galas.

As with last month there is so much topical news with numerous events and plenty of member sightings. Though I couldn’t make it...drat, included are reports on the successful Railfest, which NRM is promising to stage again in the future. So once again I’ve shunted the intended AC Locos in Preservation – Part 2 back one more month...but with at least four more Parts to come, I have pencilled them into issues right through to Christmas. Intended follow up articles on Network SouthEast have also taken a back seat. Thank goodness Carl was so busy he wasn’t able to provide a report from Eastleigh Works this month.

By the time the July issue comes out we will be half way through the Olympics, so it will be interesting to see what interesting workings occur or what transport chaos ensues. Over to you to for reports.

Many thanks to those of you who have made comments in recent weeks on the quality of Tracks, they make the effort worthwhile.

Open Day Reports & Diesel Galas - 1 Tyseley Locomotive Works Open Weekend, 23rd / 24th June by Trevor Roots: Tyseley Locomotive Works is the engineering subsidiary of the Vintage Trains charitable trust (previously called The Birmingham Railway Museum Trust). The Trust was established to preserve and demonstrate the steam locomotives in the Tyseley Collection and to operate them on the National Railway network. The Works and Steam Depot are only open during Open Days, currently twice a year in June and October and by pre-arrangement for parties. Vintage Trains operates trains on the main line using locomotives based at Tyseley Locomotive Works, as with the Castle to Scotland Tour reported elsewhere in this issue. The main 2012 summer programme features trips to Stratford-upon-Avon under the title ‘The Shakespeare Express’ from 1st July – 9th September. Travelling back north we were able to call into Tyseley on Saturday 23rd June. Thankfully the weather stayed fair, though the sun failed to put in an appearance. Considering it is a small site the following was provided: shuttle service train rides, locomotive line-ups, works viewing gallery, locomotive cavalcades, turntable & shunting demonstrations. In all there were 7 steam locos in steam and operating on the Saturday, I can’t speak for the Sunday. The site is on the A41 Warwick Road just south of Birmingham City Centre and easy to reach by car and train, Tyseley station is only a 10 min walk away.

There is a large car park as this is needed for those using the various rail tours. However the car park did fill up early on the Saturday though as visitors left, spaces became available. We were lucky as arriving lunchtime we found an unrestricted space on the A41 virtually opposite the Works entrance and later moved over into the car park. Arriving late and not sure what to expect or see we ended up staying till they threw us out at 17.00, by which time I had managed to re-photograph exhibits without hordes of people in the way.

I had only briefly visited the site once before in 1984 when it was the fledgling Birmingham Railway Museum and was more accessible and when several steam locos were still in un-restored condition. Unfortunately I have no notes from the period and I only took a few 35mm slides from which only 4-6-0 5080 ‘Defiant’ can be identified. The turntable was certainly a lot less ‘cluttered’ back then and there were no diesels. Today there is quite a collection of stock together with visiting locos either in the works or being stabled.

The site is located between the LMT depot and DMU stabling sidings to the southwest of the Birmingham Moor Street to Tyseley main line. The site contains a working turntable with 26 arms, 13 each either side of a through road. This runs up past the 3 track works/ running shed, the middle road being a dead end. A viewing gallery ran inside the entire south-western side of the works accessed by steps up and down. Beyond the works, barriers had been erected for about 75 metres creating a viewing area for passing train rides and cavalcade. No.1 also operated here with the shunting truck and toad brake van. Between the turntable and LMT DMU sidings is a 2 track platform, one track being used for catering coaches. Train rides operated on a short shuttle to the north-western end of the site, about 200 metres past the works. Between the works and the LMT depot is the old coaling stage where rolling stock is stored. In front the works is an area with dismantled locos. There were 3 other covered structures all on turntable arms, 2 temporary canvas shelters and one permanent shed.

The short train rides used Mk2 coaches 5157 + 5177 with firstly L94, then 9600 and finally 9600 + 46233 top & tailing. We managed to catch this later combination at 16.15, when the crowds had thinned out. This proved to be the only way to view the stock at the far end of the coaling stage tracks. Each shuttle ride was 2 return trips with a momentary pause back at the platform so giving 4 trips past the works in the space of about 5 mins. At about 13.20 a cavalcade of 4 steam locos stormed up to the platform and back 4 times for about 15 mins.

After 14.00, No.1 with the GWR shunting truck and toad brake van performed short 100 metre runs at the far end of the viewing area, sometimes in parallel with 9600 on the train ride. No.1 later shunted

looking back towards the turntable along the left hand track (from the train ride) showing the three tracks to the running shed / works (middle one is the dead end track) and the coaling stage to the right. The viewing area behind the rails was accessed from the works gallery and past the steam crane (just visible) on the same track as Castles 5029 & 7029

the wagons onto a turntable arm and was turned along with L94 on the turntable. All the locos in steam were at some point turned on the turntable, some more than once.

Overall for the £10 entry fee, a good event with plenty of action, albeit in a confined space but with several places to photograph the locos in action. Having now been I will be a bit more savvy on where to be at the right time for the cavalcade as I was caught out a bit by that and the fact we arrived only prior to its running. At least I can now cross off Tyseley as one of my 3 remaining preservation sites with a large ‘allocation’ of locos....just ELR & WSR left to visit.

North Norfolk Diesel Gala, 25-27th May by Stuart Moore: The North Norfolk Railway held a diesel gala over the weekend of 25th – 27th May and I went along on Saturday the 26th. As well as the home fleet of 25057, 47367 DMU 101681 (51228 + 56062) and E79960 there were two visitors, 47596 ‘Aldeburgh Festival’ from the Mid Norfolk Railway and 55019 ‘Royal Highland Fusilier’ from the Deltic Preservation Society, Barrow Hill. The Deltic has previously been in use at the Nene Valley Railway gala the weekend before and was transported over to Sheringham between 31601 and 31602 the Monday before. The trio were due to collect 47596 from Wymondham but due to paperwork issues this did not happen and the 47 was transported by low loader to the railway later in the week. A full timetable was run with all locos and units very busy. The railway, in association with the DPS ran a raffle for a return cab ride from Sheringham to Holt in the Deltic. Having entered it I quickly forgot about it and it was only because I was texting my wife that I found I had missed a call. I called back to find that I had won the trip and had to make a hasty return from Weybourne to catch the 16.09 from Sheringham. What an experience! They really are an impressive loco! We had a stop at Weybourne and then a run up past Kelling Heath to Holt. Having run around the train I climbed into cab (not an easy job with a camera bag on your back) and then we headed back down the line.

Apart from a few small issues the locos are reported to have run well. Unfortunately the NNRs recently repainted D5631 (31207) was not in use. The sight of 2 blue Cl.37's on a sunny Sunday brought back many happy memories of summer Saturdays at Norwich watching the Great Yarmouth summer specials, oh for those days! In addition to the above, 4-6-0 Black 5 45337 was wearing a small yellow warning panel below the smokebox and on the rear of the tender plus a BR logo on the tender !!

The event seemed quite popular though not as popular as the steam event a few weeks before seemed to be, but I thought equally as good. The Deltic stayed on the line until the end of June, with the last running day on the 30th. If you have not travelled on the NNR it is worth a visit. It is a very picturesque line with a good selection of motive power. If you are more of a linesider, there are plenty of good photo spots virtually the whole length of the line along well used public footpaths.

Railfest 2012, NRM York by Stuart Moore

Railfest was held from 2nd - 10th June 2012 and was a celebration of record achievers or breakers. I went with my eldest son and Simon Mutton (our President) on the 3rd. Expecting it to be busy we got there before opening but, probably due to the very poor weather there was not much of a queue. The poor weather didn't stop us getting a good look around the displayed loco's units and OTP. Of course the main items on display were steam engines with the likes of 60163 ‘Tornado’, streamlined 6229 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ and 4468 ‘Mallard’ all on display outside. ‘Flying Scotsman’ was also on show but was anything but complete. The majority of the modern image locos were on display together and a good selection had been collected. A list of what was on display is given below. A nice touch was putting the prototype HST power car 41001 next to the record holder 43159 which were adjacent to ‘Mallard’ and ‘Tornado’. A number of the exhibits had cab access giving visitors a chance to see a view that they wouldn't normally and also a chance to get out of the rain which blighted the event for most of the week! The main event of the weekend was the naming of 91110 ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’ and the launch of its commemorative livery on the opening day. We missed the naming but looking at the crowds in photographs of the event, that was not a bad thing!. The loco looked splendid and its Southern Railway Battle of Britain class style name plate was excellent, well done to those involved. We were fortunate to see the loco (see photo below) as it didn't last the full week of the show and was back on normal duties with East Coast within a couple of days.

Also on display was the driving trailer for the Brighton Belle restoration project and a South East Trains Cl.395 Javelin, giving a bit of a contrast. Of the two, the Belle looked the more appealing to travel in as a passenger. There was nothing on display from either DBS or Freightliner which was a shame as they could both have included items of importance to the current railway scene. For example the last locos built in the UK from DBS and the newest locos currently on the system from Freightliner ie. Cl.70s. That aside, the display was well considered and well put out. DRS sent newly refurbished 37419 and newly named 57309 ‘Pride of Crewe’ along with 20312. GBRF sent 66736 ‘Wolverhampton Wanderer’ and 92036 both in the new corporate Europorte livery. Another bonus was stumbling across the NRM's new Cl. 09 shunter 09017 which was parked at the rear of the main museum (see photo overpage). Re-liveried in maroon with NRM logos it was with an un-numbered 08 shunter....that is 13079, which has been in that condition for quite a while since repainting, ed. The NRM's other shunter 08911 ‘Matey’ was in the main area on display.

I had been to the first Railfest in 2004 and I felt that this was better. Well done to all involved in organising and running the event, especially in such inclement weather. It was well worth the journey and only better weather would have made for a better day....green with envy as I couldn’t get there, ed !!!! Railfest 2012, NRM York...another perspective by Andrew Woodcock: Initially I was put off by the admission price of £15 (£13 via the website) but decided that the variety of items on display made a visit essential. I booked via the website and went on Thursday 7th. With only a casual visit to the trade stands, it took me 3+ hours to see everything and fortunately the rain held off. A brochure was purchased for £5 which was well worth it for the information contained.

Two items were missing for my visit, the newly named 91110, having returned to work and 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’. The main line train was top and tailed by 3717 ‘City of Truro’ and D6700.Some were disappointed that only this engine was in use as others were in light steam for the evening events. I was surprised that none of the Cl.08/09 shunters were in the line up, 08911 was visible outside the boundary fence whilst 09017 and 13079 were against a wall in the stabling area. My main disappointment was the sight of NE502 ‘Flying Scotsman’. It was a last minute arrival and I don’t know what it should look like now, but it was a dull matt black with parts on the footplate and no coupling rods. Many did not like its looks! I think my two highlights were oddballs, Spooners Boat and the Ffestiniog train. The latter was worked by ‘Palmerston’ but tailed by a Simplex diesel at times. This was really an odd sight. The brochure lists it as LR 2156 but the plate showed LR10227/1917 and its FR No 435. As always you are left with one identity dilemma.

All over the site exhibits were well displayed with description boards. Plenty of staff were about resulting in access to nearly all parts including footplates/cabs The event was excellently organised and staffed. At the end of my visit, a tired but delighted enthusiast returned to the station for his train home. Locos noted passing through York were 56311, 66117, 66415 and 66730.

Open Day Reports & Diesel Galas - 2 Keighley & Worth Valley Rly Diesel Gala, 25-27th May by Andrew Woodcock: KWV held a Diesel Gala on 25th - 27th May 2012 and all three days were graced with excellent weather. Changes to the advertised visiting motive power included replacement 33103 'Swordfish' for 26038 and 33012, regretfully unable to attend. The two resident diesel shunters D2511 and D0226 were the power for the Ingrow - Keighley shuttles on Friday and Saturday with the diesel railbus 79964 on Sunday.

Due to work commitments I had to attend on the Friday, which was well attended mostly by older more sober enthusiasts. I rode on the various engines with the exception of 25059 which did not work until late afternoon/evening. Everything went well until I decided to catch the 13.47 express from Keighley behind 50026. The train was delayed whist 31466 was put into Damens Loop to give a good run. Leaving late, 50026 only got a few hundred yards up the hill when smoke appeared from underneath the loco (some said that had seen sparks/flames. Two attempts to restart were unsuccessful.

I was impressed at the handling of the situation using procedures and common sense to the situation. I am not sure exactly what order things happened, but 50026 reversed its train into Platform 4, the Ingrow - Keighley shuttle was delayed/cancelled, the 14.37 departure was cancelled and 37075 towed 50026 to Haworth by which time 31466 had arrived in Platform 3 from Damens. The next train departed a little late from Platform 3 with 33103 and this released 31466 to run round onto the stock in Platform 4 for the next departure. In a lot of ways I am not a big fan of things at Haworth but credit where it is due the situation was handled efficiently and speedily and all credit to the staff involved.

Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast by David Spencer – 1964 Part 10

I try to provide extra detail on the items of traction shown in photos, other than number, date and location as provided by Dave…so it’s my fault if errors creep in, ed. September: (cont) Sunday the 20th was The Last County Special' from Birmingham to Swindon Works and I did my usual early morning walk to Tyseley shed to see 1011 being prepared but instead of getting a bus into Birmingham I got a lift in the empty stock. It was not a fancy trip just out via Worcester and Gloucester and return via Didcot and Banbury.

Swindon Works was beginning to change and whilst the majority of stuff was ex-GW strangers like Stanier class 4 42954 and 42978, Ivatt class 4 43115 and 43120 and several V2s were also present, the prize was perhaps NCB 67, which was a former Taff Vale loco.

Remarkably this loco is now the subject of a new build project at Didcot Railway Centre (DRC).

The frames of Modified Hall 4-6-0 No.7927 ‘Willington Hall’ and the

boiler from Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No.48518 are the basis for the

re-construction of 1014. The reason it is taking an existing number/name is in honour of Dai Woodham and Barry scrapyard.

1014 can be seen right in the DRC workshop on 17th April 2011

Before embarking on my next jaunt I photographed the re-construction works at Birmingham New Street Station on the 24th, where the photo below shows the removal of the ex-Midland Railway overall roof.

Saturday 26th saw another special train with the SLS 'Newport Area Rail Tour' I could have stayed on my DMU direct to Newport but that seemed too easy. So with time to kill, I changed at Gloucester where I caught 75053 to Hereford and Newport, that way meeting mates at both Gloucester and

Hereford. The tour was by Swindon cross country DMU and very short and basic. We went direct to Furnace Sidings (on the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway now) then returned to the main line and the Uskmouth Branch and finally into Newport Docks terminating at Dock Street Goods depot. The total mileage being only 49 miles 65 chains, so short but almost all quality freight and well worth it.

June 23 (cont) A steam special ran from King’s Cross to Holt via Norwich as part of the Titfield Thunderbolt celebration. This was powered to Norwich by 34067 ‘Tangmere’ and Pannier 9466 was then added to run top and tail to Holt. As usual half of the tour stock was taken off the train to allow access to Cromer station (photo below opposite by Stuart Moore). As reported by Stuart Moore, Saturday 23rd June was a good railway day in Norfolk. It was the first day of the Lowestoft air show and as usual there were extra rail services to carry the spectators. This year the air show was at a weekend for the first time and in order to cater to expected extra people two loco hauled sets were run. DRS supplied the traction but unusually there were mixed top and tailed Cl.37/47 services. The 47's were both at the Lowestoft end while the 37's were at the Norwich end. The locos used were 37419 + 47828 and 37425 + 47841, both the 37s having only recently been re-liveried and returned to service with DRS. The stock was the usual Greater Anglia Mk3 + DVT rakes. Three services ran to the air show on Saturday with 3 returns in the evening. One service ran on the Sunday but was a DMU substitute due to problems with 47841. It was later repaired and ran ECS to Lowestoft to form the service back in the evening. In addition 37409 was sent to Norwich with Caroline (977025). It was thought that this was precautionary move to cover in case of a failure. Fortunately the loco wasn't needed and spent the weekend in the yard adjacent to the station. Three Cl.321 EMUs were used to cover the Mk3 hauled stock that was being used on the specials.

66088 + DRP 78213 and a rake of yellow wagons were seen leaving Preston heading northbound at 05.25 The severe weather with heavy rain caused landslips on the ECML at Berwick upon Tweed and on the WCML at Tebay. Anglo Scottish services were severely disrupted cutting Scotland off by rail for a period. Further disruption was also caused by 66734 derailing whilst heading north on 6S45 North Blyth - Fort William on the remote eastern side of Loch Treig, between Currour and Tulloch on the West Highland Line. Only a few of the leading tankers were derailed but the loco has gone down the bank towards the Loch. Fortunately the driver wasn’t unhurt and probably more fortunate it wasn’t a DMU that first encountered the obstruction. The recovery work will be protracted due to remote location and difficult terrain. The Fort William Sleeper has been cancelled with the stack at the station for passengers to sleep on.

Railtour News Castle to Scotland Tour, 26 - 28th May 2012 by Derek Sneddon: This 3 day tour was organised to take a GWR Castle lass loco from Birmingham to Edinburgh and I caught up with it at Stirling on the Sunday. Saturday 26th May: 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’ ran as 1Z21 07.45 from Tyseley Warwick Road to Carlisle via stops at Wolverhampton and Crewe to pick up passengers. It was due in at Carlisle at 15.20, but didn't arrive in Carlisle until 15.39. It had set fire to an embankment at Greenholme. When the train got to Carlisle, 47760 was moved from the rear of the train to between the coaches and the steam loco. To complicate matters at Carlisle, 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ was visiting Carlisle on a special 1Z32 05.37 from Lincoln that it had took over from Crewe. Also 66850 failed on 6J37 Carlisle Yard to Chirk timber train somewhere south of Carlisle. 47851 and 47854 also visited on a 1Z94 Bristol to Carlisle charter. 47854 came off its train and went to push the timber train off the mainline into a loop. So everything was delayed after that. The tour left Carlisle at 17.16 as 1Z22 Carlisle to Edinburgh. Sunday 27th May: An optional tour Forth Circular excursion was available for those who wished starting from Linlithgow. 5043 ran as 1Z46 12.30 Linlithgow to Stirling via Burntisland, Cowdenbeath and Alloa. The train then had a two hour stopover in Stirling from 15.46 until 17.45. Then the train became 1Z47 17.45 Stirling to Linlithgow via Falkirk, Dalmeny and Inverkeithing for reverse, arriving Linlithgow at 20.24. The original plan was for the train to attach a Cl.47 47760, at Inverkeithing at the end of its journey and pull the train backwards to Linlithgow. But ScotRail requested the Cl.47 be kept on the rear of the train due to fire risk. So it ran the full trip with the 47760 on the rear end.

Monday 28th May: The tour reversed its route with 5043 running back south as 1Z23 from Edinburgh to Tyseley with 47760 tucked in behind the steam loco and 37516 dead on the very rear of the train. Coaching stock for the tour was: 9101, 5191, 5157, 5177, 17018, 99349, 99361, 99353, 5198 and 35470.

Olympic Rail Related News

The London Chamber Orchestra (LCO) performed at St Pancras on Wednesday 27th June to mark one month until the start of the Olympics and to celebrate the first Javelin branded train in passenger service. Though commonly used by enthusiasts since their entry into service, the official use of the title Javelin has been held back until now as the name of the six minute shuttle service from St Pancras to Stratford International.

The event was attended by stakeholders and press, and allowed South Eastern Trains managing director Charles Horton to speak with the media to stress SETs readiness for the Games while offering the public Olympic travel advice.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has also recorded messages to be played at stations in advance of and during Games-time to advise passengers where they can go to for more travel information. These will be played at stations from Tuesday 3rd July until the end of the Paralympic Games on Sunday 9th September.

Rolling Stock Miscellany Clydesmill Fire Training Centre: Having recently opened on the site of the Clydesmill Power Station in Cambuslang, this state of the art training facility, which replaced the former facility at Gullane has acquired two ex-BR Mk2 coaches, 5788 in ex-Intercity livery and 5821 in ex-Virgin livery. They are positioned on a pair of tracks alongside a short platform. A short tunnel section has also been built. All photos were taken by Derek Sneddon on a visit there on Saturday 12th May.

Freight Corner WAGON UPDATES by Scott Yeates (to UKRS No.3 UK Wagons 2012): To allow members to keep their copy as up to date as possible, it is intended to provide changes via this spot every month. It is known that various wagons reportedly withdrawn or missing from previous editions are still in service so if any member can provide information please let Scott know, contact details on page 2. Nothing to report FREIGHT NEWS When more should be done to remove freight from our roads, bizarrely there is a threat to raise track access charges for railfreight !! Admittedly railfreight does not cover its costs but neither does road based traffic and certainly the damage to the environment and continual road maintenance from heavy lorries seems to have be conveniently overlooked. Though now only home to Northern Rails fleet of Cl.156s, Allerton Depot officially opened on 10th May. A third timber flow for Colas Rail from Baglan Bay to Chirk started on 22nd May. This supplements the existing Ribblehead and Teigngrace workings. From 1st May Colas Rail took over the aviation oil flows from Grangemouth to Prestwick, Linkswood and Sinfin. Coal traffic is buoyant leaving the Weardale Railway with 27 trains having run in May. The service departs Wolsingham at 10.30 Mon-Fri to Scunthorpe Steel Works or Ratcliffe on Soar PS with the empties due back after 22.00.

LADS WEEK 2011 ...well actually it was 10 days – Part 2: Day 3 - April 10th 2011 (cont): Having now entered Switzerland (country number 5), Schaffhausen was our first call. An assortment of Swiss stock and some German units were in the station. Adjacent to the station is the old shed which is now the home to 3 preserved steam locomotives. It was locked but we identified 23058 and 52 8055. We then went to Winterthur. The old shed there is home to some preserved and private stock. Nearby there were also some SBB locomotives and units. It was now getting late and for the next 3 nights we were staying in Winterthur.

Day 4 - April 11th 2011: Winterthur is a very busy station, albeit mainly units. To give a general idea, the north sees the old single car electric Cl. 540 units and the Thurbo DMUs. The south end sees the coming and going of the relatively new Cl. 514 double deck units. We decided to give this a look for the morning rush hour and 68 units were seen with 2 freights passing.

Cl.152 is a popular class with DB drivers and whereas most are in standard red livery,

152137 is in TFG blue livery, Haltingen depot, 11th April 2011

After Haltingen we went to Mulhouse, home of the French National Railway Museum. We went to the Nord yard and there we saw 13 locomotives. Now to the station. In the past there has always been a choice of locomotives stabled around the station that have brought trains in, or collecting trains from Switzerland. It was almost deserted. We only saw 1 tractor (The French spelling is tracteur) and 3 locomotives. I can only assume that many of the freights now are hauled by dual voltage locomotives that do not need to change.

Basel Wolf depot at weekends holds an amazing quantity of locomotives,

Our next Swiss depot will be Basel Wolf. Our route there took us back into Germany to visit Haltingen depot. On route we viewed Weil am Rheim where there were 2 German, 1 Austrian and 2 Swiss locomotives. We ALL took down a dispo locomotive number ES64 F4 052. It does not exist (five appointments with specsavers when we get back)! Haltingen only had an intercom, I asked and we got round. There were 40 on shed, including 9 Cl. 145s. You do not see that many on their home depot at Berlin Seddin.

Now back into Switzerland and Basel Wolf (sounds like a sitcom character) depot is next on the list. Trying to remember where the office was, we wandered the perimeter and bumped into 2 men and asked where to find the boss? One of them was the boss! He found us a guide and around we went. One stipulation (safety elf) was we put on safety glasses. Being a weekday there were 33 on shed. The next stop was the freight yard at Muttenz. Scattered around were over 30 locomotives, some French. There are several roads within the yard, so we drove to where the locomotives were stabled. We parked the car at Muttenz station and took the train into Basel and spent some time there. Once again, a good assortment. At the east end of the station one of the tram routes drops down from street level so we could spot them as well. We returned to Winterthur via 2 private lines, the WLV at Waldenburg and the BD/WM at Bremgarten. This line has recently taken delivery of 14 new units and we saw them all! Once again, overnight in Winterthur.

Light Rail, Metro & Tram News Midland Metro: Work started on the 13th June on the tram extension for Birmingham city centre. The line is being extended by 1.4km between Snow Hill and New Street railway stations. Digging commenced at the junction of Bull Street and Corporation Street. The scheme also includes a new depot at Wednesbury and a new fleet of trams. Work is expected to be completed by 2015. London Tramlink: Following the delivery of the 6 new Variobahn trams, the new increased service started operating from 25th June. Prior to this date driver training was undertaken, as can be seen in the photo below. There are reports that these trams do not have the oomph to climb hills !!

ICRS Publications Our next two books are in production with mid August release dates, UK Combine Summer Edition 2012 and Irish Railways 2012. Other 2012 editions available are UK Pocket Book, UK Combine, UK Wagons and UK Name Directory. The latter has been reworked to be even more comprehensive than before and is the only such book currently on the market. It is also a small print run as are the current 2011 editions of UK Locomotives, Diesel Units, Electric Units and Irish Railways, so if you don’t want to miss out, order yours now. The individual books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in the Combine and are very useful. As for future titles, an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is in preparation for release during 2013 to celebrate our 40 year anniversary and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published.

Books can be ordered online via PayPal at www.icrs.org.uk or by post from Carl Watson, ICRS Publications, 14, Partridge Gardens, Waterlooville, Hampshire PO8 9XG (please made cheque / PO payable to ICRS).

All books, except A6 Pocket Datafiles, are A5 wire bound printed on 90gm paper with laminated card covers allowing them to be laid flat.
