Society Notice Board Editor’s Comments: DBS are certainly picking up the pace on relieving itself of redundant locos with 103 going on the tender list including 20 x Cl.60s, the first such examples. Meanwhile other stored locos are slowly being sent for scrapping...sad times. Still it isn’t just in the UK that stock is stored, look on page 30. For those who attended the Long Marston Open Day (see report) in glorious weather it may the last time that such an event will feature substantial numbers of stored locos as they are also now heading off into oblivion, including Cl.87s, shame I was unable to get there. Re-liveries are still in vogue particularly on the ECML with East Coast turning out a Mk.4 rake including DVT 82202 in silver with purple stripe. 91107 has also recently been outshopped to match. Not to be outdone Grand Central has turned out its first HST rake of Mk.3s in the same livery as its Cl.180 Adelantes, black with broad orange stripe (see cover). Into service on the 21st Sep, this set, 40424, 41201, 42401-03 matches the two similarly re-liveried power cars 43468 and 43480, which have been re-engined and re-numbered. The other sets and Cl.43s will follow. Also in a surprise move DBS has adorned 60099 with a silver livery and brandings for DB Schenker and TATA STEEL, a cross between 60074 and stored 60006/033. With the preservation scene now being the bastion of classic traction action, it was good to see the MNR Cl.37 Gala was successful with 12 Cl.37s in attendance....did anyone go and if so please send in a report and photos. I managed to attend, more by luck than planning, a rare chance to view the preserved EMU stock at the Electric Railway Centre, Coventry (see report). With other features, this issue therefore leans heavily towards electric traction which I hope you will enjoy. For those who renew by PayPal on the website can I please ask that you remember to provide your home address and email via the comments box as the PayPal account you use may be different. Therefore not only will our records be inaccurate you will fail to get your copy of Tracks as I assume you have moved. Thanks: should be given to Nigel Farebrother for his sterling efforts in supplying info to update, amend and improve the UKRS19 Irish Railways. UK Pocket Book 2011 (UKRS01) Cover Competition: For the ICRS UK Pocket Book 2010 we asked Members if they had photos of the new Class 70 locomotives that we could use on the front cover. Member Brian Derricote submitted the successful photo. This year we would like to offer all Members the opportunity to submit photos that they think would be appropriate for the front cover of UKRS01. The lucky winner will receive a free copy of the UKRS01 when it is released in February/March 2011. Requirements: Clear sharp images only please. • Ideally photo must be provided as a high resolution (4 Megapixel or greater) digital image. Or it

can be a scanned image of a photo or slide. Slightly wonky or dark images can be improved as can poles spouting from engine roofs, so don’t worry if you think a good shot is so ‘ruined’.

• Subject must be a loco or feature a loco very prominently. • Subject must be topical or newsworthy and have been taken in 2010. • Subject must be listed within the book.

Rules: • Only ICRS Members may enter this competition and you must own the copyright of any photos

you submit. • All entries must be submitted either via email to [email protected] or on a CD by post to

ICRS, 14 Partridge Gardens, Waterlooville, PO8 9XG. • ICRS Officials will be the judges whose decision is final. • Closing date for entries is 30th November 2010.

When submitting photos please ensure you provide your name, address and membership number as well as full details of the subject, date, working as appropriate and a reason why you feel it to be topical or newsworthy. All submissions must comply with the requirements listed above. The winning entry will be announced in the January 2011 edition of Tracks. Members Letters: (incl. update to Location Spot’light’, Channel Tunnel etc, May 2005) “I just had to write to say thank you for your Location Spot’light’ series. Thanks to your info on the Chunnel, I was able to spend a very pleasant 2 ½ hrs there last week (email sent 17th Sep). Without your article I would never have found it. To confirm your article, there is a marked footpath crossing Jnct.13 which is signposted from Folkestone West station. It took me an hour to walk to the viewpoint on the footpath from the top of Castle Hill. However it was only 40mins to walk back down the hill !! It took 2hrs 20mins to see the shuttles round, a total of 11. I assume this was an average day. Just a note to car drivers. Where the footpath leaves the side of the road to go on the fields to the viewpoint there is a pull-in. While it might be tempting to park there, it will block the equestrian gate onto the fields. Talking to a local I was informed there is a constant police patrol round there. I would suggest parking at the top of Castle Hill(the dog walkers do)and retrace along the footpath. As a bonus I was able to photo 2 javelins operating on local services at Folkestone West station Thanks for all your hard work with the mag. Best wishes” Jim Fitch Membership Matters: Membership Rates: Annual: £16.00 Five year: £75.00 (saving £5.00) Joint (with GB Bus Group saving £4.00): £27.00 ICRS Membership gives you: • a high quality 32 page monthly magazine Tracks - covering all aspects of railways: UK past and present,

ICRS Publications Our updated UK Combine Summer Edition 2010 has sold well. Please note the individual books that make up the Combine ie. Locomotives, Diesel Units and Electric Units and the UK Name Directory and Irish Railways are small print runs, so if you don’t want to miss out order yours now. The individual books have not been produced recently and the latter Unit books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in the Combine and are very useful. The success of the book sales has benefited the club directly, increasing the size of Tracks and is allowing us to contemplate further improvements and other books. Additionally an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is also in preparation and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published. So please keep supporting your society with your purchases or encouraging friends to do so or better still join. Copies of all books can be ordered via the website or direct from Carl Watson, prices below. See rear cover to see pictures of book covers.

Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast by David Spencer - 1963 Part 5

My diary reads “Summer overtime starts” and it seems making money was more important than chasing trains, however I did have two more trips, the first was to Reading, Guildford (haulage being 31811) and Havant for a trip on the Hayling Island branch. Being Summer a two train service was in operation and I had 32646 in one direction and 32670 for the return, after which I went on to Portsmouth and across to Ryde. Whilst family holidays had taken me to Ventnor on many occasions I had never done the Cowes line so this was my opportunity. Haulage was W26 to Ryde shed, where I went round, then W31 to Ventnor, W14 back, and W24 to Cowes and back. I copped three tanks. I returned home via Reading and had 5070 for haulage back to Birmingham.

On the last he last Sunday in June I went up to York behind D100 and then onto Newcastle behind D237. There steam was abundant including 60083 on station pilot, 60535 on a freight and A4s still on Gateshead shed.

I then went across to Carlisle where I had intended to come south on the Thames Clyde Express but I was delighted to see one of the rare Gateshead A4s 60002 on a Glasgow (St Enoch) to Leeds City relief and it turned out to be a real adventure. We stopped at Culgaith across the level crossing with the engine out of breath and I got out for a photograph. It appeared the driver had only driven an A4 three times before with the fireman never having fired one. Eventually we got going but only as far as Kirkby Stephen when we had to stop for another blow up, this time not in the platform so I could not get out again. Peak D49 came in very late on the real Thames Clyde and changed to D82 on to Leicester and home to Birmingham and home. On the first Sunday in July I had D156 take me down to Bristol, then through the Seven Tunnel to Newport. I had told you I loved the Brecon and Merthyr Junction Railway and in time I walked the whole way from Newport to Brecon in three separate days this was the first day from Newport (well Gaer Junction actually) to Bargoed. No one ever questioned me as I walked passed Park Junction and along the Golden Mile, so called because the Marquess of Bute charged a toll on every coal train going to Newport Docks, At Bassaleg Junction where the B&M leaves the Western Valley line I went into the box for a chat. With 95 levers, it was a big box but I had a long way to go so I made my apologies and made my way and as far as Bedwas where there was lots of interest, then a four mile run with nothing, not even housing it was so boring until I reached Duffryn Isaf where the ex Barry Railway Llanbradach Viaduct from Penrhos Upper Junction came in. After that, interest abounded again including Maesycwmmer Viaduct and lots more before I reached Bargoed and a train home via Cardiff. Two weeks later I was sent on a week long course on the TSSA Summer School in Oxford. To get there I went to Princes Risborough and walked down the Watlington branch. Track was in as far as Chinnor and the original station building was still standing but it was eventually demolished and the preserved one is a new build. One amazing thing was that when I visited the line in 2007, I took a photo at Bledlow Bridge Halt and after the train had gone I went to look at the platform, it was in identical condition as it was in my 1963 photo with no deterioration or improvement. After Chinnor I had a few problems where the bridges had been taken out, but we got there and both Aston Rowant and Watlington stations were intact. On a free afternoon, two of us went to Bletchley as I had never done the line or linesided there before. The plan was to have another weekend in South Wales with Roger but I had all my money stolen and whilst I know who did it I could never prove it and had to borrow money just to get home.

The month ended with a half day trip to the BTC Museum at Clapham.

all photos by Dave Spencer (to be cont) PS. David has additionally pointed out that in the Walnut Tree Viaduct photo from last month, the remains of the Glamorgan Canal lie beneath the bridge in the right foreground.

Network News Birmingham Moor Street by James Holloway: The terminus platforms nos. 3 & 4 have had new track laid during the last couple of weeks, and a set of points have been inserted on the existing main line to allow access, although the track is not totally connected yet. The replacement bridge (part of the viaduct) is almost complete and work is continuing on new track and platform ends.

Preservation News Electric Rly. Museum Open Day, Coventry 25-26th Sep 2010 by Trevor Roots: The Electric Railway Museum is situated on Rowley Road, Baginton on the south-eastern outskirts of Coventry adjacent to the Air Museum at Coventry Airport. The site originally started as the Coventry Steam Railway Centre in 1986 but is now home to the Suburban Electric Railway Association (SERA) www.emus.co.uk who took over sole running of the site in 2004. In Dec 2009 Electric Railway Museum then took over responsibility for developing the site. It is home to many unique EMUs and is the largest such private collection in the UK including the only remaining examples of several classes of EMU. SERA’s aims are to establish an electric traction heritage centre. The site is not normally open to the public and rolling stock is normally sheeted over. Being within the confines of the airport is clearly in a security sensitive area and visitors are therefore discouraged from trying to view the stock within the secure compound. There are 6 sidings with a short 100m running line leading from the northern 3 past the Signalbox and halt being built. The southern 3 sidings are all isolated.

Locos on site consist of 3 ex-industrial diesel shunters and 3 ex-industrial electric DC / battery locos. Nos 3682 and 7284 were built for internal use at Kearsley Power Station as Nos.1 and 4 respectively (Remarkably Nos.2 and 3 also exist on the Tanfield Railway). Whilst 3682 passed into preservation on closure of the PS in 1982 and is in original condition with pantograph, 7284 was rebuilt by CEGB as a battery loco and pantograph removed. It moved to Heysham nuclear power station where it retired in 2009 as the last working industrial electric loco. No.4 had 3 original cab windows making identifiable.

There are 26 25kv AC overhead and various DC 3rd rail powered EMU carriages on site of which 21 make up 8 sets of classes 309, 405, 414, 416, 501 & 503. The other 5 are just individual vehicles. See UKRS02 UK Combine 2010 on pages 162-168 for detailed info, the code being COV. There were also 5 grounded van bodies and a couple of City & South London Railway (C&SLR) grounded underground trailers. One of these, the gutted remains of 163, is soon to depart as beyond repair.

There is also a small assortment of freight / non passenger rolling stock (6 items). One of the recent acquisitions is the prototype chassis for high speed freight vehicles, RDB511023. So the chance to view the stock was too good to miss and luckily coincided with my plans for travelling from Scotland to East Sussex. I therefore called in on the Saturday. Unfortunately problems had already beset their plans to run a demonstration freight train on their short piece of running track with the high speed freight vehicle derailing in the middle of the small cutting. Not sure if they sorted it out for Sunday as the crane was trapped at the headshunt beyond.

The weather was kind as heavy rain would have made the rough site a bit messy, so thankful for that. Many volunteers were on hand to provide info and conduct guided tours, though I was unable to avail myself of that as time was short with still a couple of hundred miles to go and two more preserved sites to fit in, I had already done 250 miles that day !! A Information & Stock Book was handed out so thanks to those involved for their efforts to see otherwise oft seen secretive stock. East Lancs Diesel Gala 2nd – 4th July 2010 by Andrew Woodcock: Due to work commitments my visit was on the Friday but what a surprise as the weekday rover tickets are much cheaper than weekend and with my senior pass it only cost me £12.50 for the day. Coming by road from the east it was off to Heywood and its free car park. Only a pity it did not open until the first train arrived top and tailed by the two class 33s. The weather was excellent and the day went well, the only drawback was that some trains did not have a buffet car open and Rawtenstall buffet was closed. Passengers out in good numbers for a Friday enjoyed a mixture of single locos, double headers and top and tail operation. On arrival in Bury on the first train from Heywood we had the sight of 4-6-2 71000 ‘Duke of Gloucester’ with support coach coming into the station from the Ramsbottom side and at a guess following the service train to Heywood and then off to main line duties.

Preservation Photo Spot - 1 650v DC 3rd rail EMUs

There are only 9 650v DC third rail EMU carriages still extant, 8 of them preserved and one Cl.501 trailer (70170) at MoD Marchwood, which hopefully one day may be secured to make a full 3 car set. With the 2 cars of Cl.501 and the 3 cars of Cl.503 EMUs illustrated above in the report from the Electric Railway Museum, the only other similarly powered preserved EMUs are the two cars of Cl.502 at Tebay and one unclassified car in the NRM, York, shown below.

to the east of the M6 and the WCML behind (this view is from a public footpath crossing that road, which is off the A685 south of Jnct.38) the land is actually the former trackbed of the NE line from a junction off the WCML just to the

south, which headed east crossing the Settle & Carlisle line to Kirkby Stephen East at which location the preserved Stainmore Rly is now situated.

Open Day News by Trevor Roots

It is hoped that as details become known of forthcoming Open Days around the country then info concerning them will be notified to you. If anyone hears of any such events, please let me know. Nothing to report and unlikely to be anything now until 2011.

Open Day Report Long Marston open Day, 10th Sep 2010 by Neil Dix: The weather was certainly kinder than in 2009 and as per usual this was a well organised event with plenty to see. A mini bus was used to take visitors to other areas of the site but due to time constraints (and a long queue) I did not manage to get on it - although plenty of people did.

line up of locos headed by 47829 in Police livery alongside 37412, including Cl.08, 20 & 37s with 20072 at the end

There seemed to be (but I could be wrong) less people there than at previous Open Days but this may have been down to the fact that visiting locos had not been bought in and no train rides were operating.

Anglia liveried 86217

Europhoenix liveried 86215 As you know the aim was to raise £50k for charity and I would imagine gate receipts and stock lists would have made a nice contribution towards this total.

The stock list provided did not list everything in order and I am unsure if all is listed, there may have been other stock only visible from the mini-bus tour.

Railway Globetrotters by Ray Smith

Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary: Železnice Slovenskej republiky (Railways of Slovak Republic) ŽSR: This company was established in 1993 as the successor of the Ceskoslovenské státní drahy in Slovakia. The numbering system is the same as CD, see detailed description in September 2010 issue of Tracks. In 1993 when the CD and ŽSR were formed the locomotives became the property of the country they were in at that time. This meant that many classes were split between the 2 countries eg. 750 037 became ŽSR whilst 750 038 was CD.

To emphasise we are not alone in storing locos in this recession, the view below was taken on 21st August and shows part of the 256 stored locos in Sotteville Yard, France. It is taken looking south from the southern end of this 2 mile long yard opposite Quatre Mares Works. There were 12 tracks worth !! Ray Smith has the full list of numbers.
