mission statementBishop Amat Memorial High School is a four-year co-educational Archdiocesan Catholic high school. The mission of the school is to form a faith-filled community and to provide a quality education that addresses the needs of a culturally and academically diverse student body. The comprehensive instructional program flows from a college preparatory curriculum that empowers students to recognize their potential and to meet educational and life challenges in the future. The school, working in partnership with parents and the community, promotes education in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by preparing students to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselves and others, to become life-long learners, and to contribute positively to the community.

Dear Lancer Alumni, Parents and Friends,

As we complete the first month of the new school year I am pleased to provide you with the Bishop Amat High School Annual Report for fiscal year 2014-2015. Encompassing as it does, all major facets of the life and management of the school, I hope that you will find the contents

informative and interesting.

I am particularly pleased to assure you that your Alma Mater remains firmly attached to those Catholic roots that create our identity. The content of our faith is taught to rigorous academic standards in our classrooms and is constantly applied to the lives of our students by means of our Masses, Prayer Services, Retreats and Christian Service activities.

The Bishop Amat academic program continues to function at a very high level of excellence. Enhanced by the Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Inclusion Programs and driven by skilled and dedicated teachers and counselors it once again enabled our graduates to gain admission to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the United States.

Our Lancer students participated with notable success in a wide range of extracurricular activities. These include athletics, student government, band, chorus, drama, pep squad, dance and performance groups. Highlights of the year included the victorious visit of our Varsity Football Team to Dallas and the announcement that our Chamber Singers were invited to sing at the 2016 Mass of the Epiphany celebrated by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

My main administrative responsibility at Bishop Amat High School is the management of the school budget. This role challenges me to raise the revenues required to underwrite all aspects of the school’s current operation including the upkeep and enhancement of the physical plant. It is also incumbent on me to accumulate the financial resources that will be held in reserve to ensure the growth and development of the school in years to come.

I am pleased to assure the stakeholders that all of these goals were realized in 2014-2015. While providing over $550,000.00 in financial aid and expending $450,000.00 on the new All Purpose Track we ended the fiscal year with a budgetary surplus of some $600,000.00.

The Bishop Amat Named Scholarship and Endowment Trust Funds reached a record high of $6,450,909.90 by year’s end. The Reserve Fund held a balance of some $900,000.00.

I am deeply grateful to the many alumni and other friends who supported us during 2014-2015 with your talent, time and treasure. Bishop Amat High School is a great legacy handed down to us by the many thousands of dedicated Lancers who have gone before us. It is our privilege and obligation to ensure that Amat will shine not only “tonight” but into the distant future as well.

Dear Lancer Alumni, Parents and Friends,

The beginning of a new academic year serves as the perfect opportunity for us to reflect on our shared vision and purpose which make our school such a special

place. Working together in Christ to educate young men and women called to Goodness, guided by Discipline, and ardent for Knowledge has been the essence of Bishop Amat High School for nearly sixty years. As our students, faculty and staff return to campus, we pause to celebrate our rich tradition and to express our gratitude for the role each of you have played in fulfilling the mission of Bishop Amat High School.

On August 17, we were excited to welcome our newest Lancers - the 367 students who comprise the class of 2019. Our current ninth graders come from 42 Catholic elementary schools and 72 private and public middle schools located within the San Gabriel Valley and extending to Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and northern Orange County. Along with 46 transfer students who have joined us as tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders, these newest Lancers combine with our returning students to bring our total enrollment to 1,400 for the 2015-2016 school year. We are blessed to have the opportunity to prepare these young men and women for the future by way of our Catholic faith and the outstanding academic, extracurricular and Christian service programs which collectively define a Bishop Amat High School education.

To that end, as you peruse this edition of the Annual Report, I am confident its contents will confirm that the 2014-2015 school year proved no exception to the tradition of excellence we have come to enjoy as Lancers. Propelled by an overwhelming sense of school spirit and unity, our student body supported one another in the classroom, on the athletic field, and among those in need from the surrounding community. As the entire Bishop Amat Family takes great pride in our students’ achievements described on the pages that follow, please know that you are always welcome to remain connected by attending an athletic contest, choral performance, band concert, and dance or theater production. Additionally, our biannual Career Days provide you with the opportunity to speak about your chosen professions to our eleventh graders. If you may be interested in participating in the December and/or February presentations, please be sure to let us know.

With your continued support through prayer, talent or treasure, we look forward to another bright and productive school year wherein our Lancers continue to demonstrate the many ways in which Amat will shine!

God bless,

The Class of 2015 Graduates 330 Lancers at the 55th Annual Commencement Bishop Amat High School graduated 330 students at the 55th Annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2015 in Kiefer Stadium. Many family members were in attendance, eagerly awaiting the moment to celebrate their students’ success. The 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorian speeches were given by Sage Garcia and Anthony Camargo. Cristian Hernandez and Eric Contovasilis earned the privilege of delivering the opening and closing speeches at the Senior Awards Night the previous week.

The Class of 2015 achieved tremendous success in academics, athletics, and Christian service. There was a record number of Distinguished Scholars, Advanced Placement Scholars, and International Baccalaureate Candidates. Of the 330 graduates, ninety-eight percent will attend four year and two year college institutions and two percent will go on to vocational schools, the military, or the work force. A total of $14.9 million in academic scholarships was earned by the members of the graduating class.

Emily Hubert received the prestigious Pat Haden Award for combining academic excellence with noteworthy success in athletics, especially Cross Country and Track. She also received an athletic scholarship from Loyola Marymount University where she will attend in the Fall. In addition, there were 18 other graduates who earned athletic scholarships.

On March 18, 2015 Andrew Perez, Angelica Gallegos and Mercedes Lopez received special medals from Archbishop Jose Gomez following a special Mass he celebrated at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. The Archbishop awards these medals annually to students from all high school in the Archdiocese who have been extraordinarily dedicated to works of Christian Service.

We congratulate the Class of 2015 and wish them much success in their future endeavors.

Cross CountryThe Bishop Amat Cross Country Team has been a force to be reckoned with. Lead by faculty member and Coach Dan Lodolo, both the boys and girls teams have been the fastest in school history. It has been 41 years since the boys Cross Country team has seen a CIF-SS title and 20 years for the girls’ team, but all that changed when both teams took the Division 4 Championship title at Mount San Antonio College and the Boys team, the pre-race favorites, took the Cross Country State title at Woodward Park in Fresno on November 29, 2014.

Robbie Santoyo ‘16, who finished sixth in the 2.92 mile at Mt. Sac, covered the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 47 seconds, placing seventh overall. “It’s super exciting because we had not won a CIF championship in 41 years and we also get our first state championship,” Robbie stated. “We all worked together as a team. We pushed each other through the whole race and stuck together.” Other runners, recent graduate Fernando Gonzales finished 12th in 15 minutes, 57 seconds and Adrian Diaz ‘16 finished 23rd in 16 minutes, 9 seconds, qualified for state to help the lancers earn the title.

LanCers in texasIt is said that “Everything is bigger in Texas,” from the food, the

schools, to the football teams. However, the Lancer Spirit and Pride

proved to outshine Aledo High School in their 42-7 victory Friday,

September 5, 2014. Aledo, the top ranked Class 5A, #33 in the

Nation, and 19 game winning streaks, was no match for the Lancers.

Friday night’s game was a complete 180 degrees for the Lancers

after losing to Santa Margarita 26-21 in the season opener. “They

were embarrassed the way they played and we had three good

days of practice,” said Coach Steve Hagerty about the loss. “The

team improved a lot from week one and we made a lot of positive

steps forward. The younger boys got more exposure.” Amat

quarterback Damian Garcia went 12 of 18 passing for 175 yards and

three touchdowns for the Lancers when he connected with Tyler

Vaughns, Brandon Arconado, and Brandon Morales. Running back

Anthony Camargo also had 2 touchdowns for the Lancers, who

scored 21 points off two Aledo turnovers and a blocked punt. Amat

led with 28 straight points in the second quarter with the first six

coming on a drive of 10 plays over 65 yards. The Lancers gained 351

yards of total offense.

Aledo played without their star running back Jess Anders who

suffered a hip injury in the previous game. The Bearcat’s only

touchdown was scored by running back Isaiah Mallory, who led

Aledo with 164 yards on 28 carried. Quarterback Luke Bishop

connected with Mallory on a 71-yard pass that set him up for their

only points of the game.

During their stay, the team was able to enjoy the movie, When the

Game Stands Tall, the JFK Museum, as well as attend the North

Texas versus SMU game. “I am pleased with the team because they

represented themselves, the school, and their families very well. We

received compliments from many people and impressed people

connected with the team on and off the field. This is something the

kids will remember for a very long time.”

It may not have been the state title, but the girls, one of the pre-race favorites, were still proud to have made it so far, finishing second after overcoming illness by junior Samantha Cabrera and sophomore Ashley Garnica. Senior Emily Hubert commented “There was nothing to be done about that. We’re just proud of what we did.” Hubert placed 10th in 18 minutes, 42 seconds. Sophomore Ally Palomino led the Lancers, finishing seventh in 18 minutes, 36 seconds. Cabrera finished 22nd in 19 minutes, 39 seconds.

When Coach Lodolo was asked about trying to pull off the double win for the boys and girls, he said “They’ve had a great season and this has been a good year for us. It’s been a long time since we have both been here together.”

FootBaLL The 2014 Lancer Football season was one of the best we have seen in recent years. The team traveled to Dallas, TX to play Aledo High School, one of the most successful football programs in Texas. The Lancers played extremely well and defeated the Bearcats 42-7, who never lost another game and claimed the 5A State Title.

There was going to be a small margin of error within the newly constructed Mission League, as only three teams out of seven were going to qualify for the CIF playoffs. The Lancers opened on the road against Crespi High School and lost a thriller in overtime 31-30. Steadfast with determination, the Lancers went on to defeat their next five opponents and capture a share of the Mission League Championship. Next, the Lancers defeated the Lakewood Lancers at Kiefer Memorial Stadium in the first round of the CIF playoffs, and earned the right to play the JSerra Lions in south Orange County, where Amat came out victorious 24-17. The season came to an abrupt end after losing 38-37 in the semifinals to the Centennial Huskies from Corona (eventual PAC 5 CIF Champions). The Lancers played tough and gritty football all season long, and displayed all of the features that has defined Bishop Amat Football over the past five decades. Follow and support the Lancers throughout the 2015 season as it promises to pick right up where last season left off!

WrestLinGThe 2014 season was a successful one for the Lancer wrestling team and their coaches as the Lancers won the Mission League title in duals and individuals. Fourteen Lancers qualified for CIF Individuals and four lancers placed: Johnathan Ornales (4th), Sidney Flores (5th), Nigel Ruiz (2nd) and Joshua Sapien (2nd). The Lancers also advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section dual championships in which they were the Finals Runner Up.

Senior Nigel Ruiz had another great year to finish off his four years with the Lancers. In 2014 Nigel qualified for CIF Individuals, placing 2nd and took 4th at CIF Masters. Nigel went on to qualify for CIF State where he placed 7th and 3-2 at Nationals along with Sidney Flores. Nigel will be competing for the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2015.

BaseBaLLDespite having to follow the 2014 Championship Baseball team and losing the head

coach, the Lancer Baseball team did an exceptional job this season. The Lancers welcomed Coach Joe Hoggatt and started working right off the bat, “This season was unique and special, we fielded a very young squad that grew and developed over the course of the season.” With a few returning key players, the Lancers took first place in the Del Rey League and made it to CIF Finals. The Lancers defeated the number three team in the Bay League, Palos Verdes 7-1 to move onto the second round of CIF Playoffs. They continued on to defeat Rancho Alamitos 11-3 in the second round and Paloma Valley 3-2 in the Quarterfinals. In a rematch of last year’s semifinal, Redondo Union defeated the Lancers 6-2. When asked about how this season went, Coach Hoggatt stated “We tied for the Del Rey league title and went into the playoffs as the number one seed from the league. We won our first three games by playing as good a baseball as we had all season and found ourselves back in the semi-finals. We unfortunately were eliminated by the eventual champion, Redondo. We gained valuable post season experience for our returners and we feel we will be poised to make a run at another CIF championship next year.”

soFtBaLL Like baseball, the Lady Lancers Softball team had a successful season this year. With the second year under her belt, Coach Kristen Dedmon continues her success with the Lancers. The Lady Lancers took second place in the Del Rey league and went on to the CIF Playoffs. In the first round, the Lancers defeated San Jacinto, the number one team in the Mountain Pass league, 4-1. They also defeated Burbank 4-3 in the second round after coming back from a 3-0 deficit. The Lancers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a miracle comeback and advanced to the quarterfinals.

The Lancers advanced to the semifinals after defeating San Clemente 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The road to the CIF championship ended in the semifinals when the Lancers lost to La Serna High School 1-0. The Lancers put up a fight, only allowing one run in the fourth inning. “We’re very pleased with how much we have progressed over the season, though. It’s still hard to take a 1-0 loss,” Coach Dedmon stated.

financial aidscholarship dollarsKeeping tuition affordable for those who want to be a part of the Amat Family has always been both a focus and a strength of our school. Due to the condition of the economy, many families are unable to send a child to Bishop Amat High School or are unable to have a child continue to attend the school. The primary reason for student withdrawal is the inability of the family to pay the tuition.

It is very important that Bishop Amat remain accessible and affordable to the families whom we serve. To that end, the school continues to pursue scholarship opportunities for our students. Monies raised through this year’s Annual Appeal will be directed to current and future students of families who want to attend but cannot afford the entire cost. In addition to cash gifts, many generous individuals and businesses contribute goods or “in-kind gifts” to Bishop Amat during the year. Many of these gifts are made in support of our Annual Extravaganza, Lancer Classic, and Golf Tournament. Contributions such as computer hardware, library books, and printing support are other ways to assist the school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and businesses who have contributed to Bishop Amat during the 2014-2015 school year.

the Class of 1964, 50tH reunion - The Class of 1964 celebrated their 50th Reunion at the Embassy Suites in Santa Ana. The festivities began with a bus ride from the hotel to Bishop Amat for the Homecoming Alumni BBQ on October 3, 2014. The class reunited and talked over a BBQ dinner followed by the Homecoming game against Serra High School. The reunion took place on Saturday, October 4 with the social hour and a buffet dinner. There was a professional photographer and a photo booth for the classmates to capture all the memories of the night.

the Class of 1974, 40th reunion - The Class of 1974 celebrated their 40th Reunion at the Kellogg House Mansion at Cal Poly Pomona on June 27, 2014. The night included a happy hour get-together and dinner. The Reunion Committee members presented Bishop Amat with an autograph frame signed by the 1974 Lancers with well wishes, greetings, and kind words from those that were in attendance (see picture).

the Class of 1984 30th reunion – The Class of 1984 took a more casual approach to celebrating 30 years together. They held a Casino Night at Steve Taylor’s home in Glendora. The evening was well organized, as there were craps and blackjack tables all neatly placed around the ‘taco’ man. There was 80’s music, plenty of refreshments and prizes, which included Bishop Amat gear and memorabilia. It was easy to see and feel the genuine affection the Class of 1984 still possesses for one another.

the Class of 1994, 20th reunion – The Class of 1994 celebrated their 20th Reunion at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin. Upon arrival, the Lancers were greeted with visions of beautiful and exotic cars, along with hors d’oeuvres and fellow classmates. The event was well attended and nicely organized, with many classmates by the end of the evening promising to stay in touch on a more regular basis. It was definitely a great night to be a Lancer Alum!
