Competence
• “The competence of the instructor is probably the biggest single factor affecting safety in adventure activates”.
• Competence is more than knowledge or technical skills.
• The biggest single cause of accidents in adventure activities is human error accidents.
• Competence can not be taught – it must be learned. And that takes time.
Ensuring instructor competence
• Selection• Induction• Validation• Deployment• Field Monitoring• Further Training and Experience
Adventure Activities, National Governing Bodies,
and the law.
Following safe working practices as identified by a relevant NGB is likely to be sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations (AALR)
and the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA).
A good apprenticeship in Adventure Activities:
• Is a personalised programme• Embraces NGB awards• Is good for the employer• Is good for the apprentice• Is good for the sector• Leads to employability
