This Safety Notice provides guidance to assist with the manual handling task of lifting and carrying bulky items such as boxes and crates.

PACKING AND LIFTING TIPS

1. Be sure to use boxes that are in good condition.

2. Don’t over-fill boxes, they should be light enough for one person to carry.

3. Use trolleys and hand carts.

4. Check the weight of the box before attempting to lift it – if it is too heavy, remove some of the contents to another box.

Bend your knees

Keep your head up

Keep your back straight

Stand square to the box, balanced and stable

REMEMBER

Use good lifting techniques – do not reach, twist etc.

Keep your head up when lifting – it helps to keep your back straight.

Carry boxes against your body and do not lift boxes above your shoulder.

Get as close as possible to the box before attempting to lift it.

Bend your knees.
