Birmingham City can confirm that their UEFA Women's Champions League quarter finalfirst leg against Arsenal will be held at St. Andrew's on Monday 24 March (7pm kick off). The eagerly-anticipated all-WSL tie will be staged at Birmingham City's famoushome following the success of the Round of 16 victory over FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk inNovember. This is already the furthest Blues have progressed in Europe's elite competition afterthe 7-2 aggregate win over Russian opposition had followed a 4-0 two-legged success overPK-35 Vantaa of Finland. Admission details for the big match will be confirmed in due course. Meanwhile Birmingham have bolstered their squad further with the acquisition offormer Liverpool hot shot Hannah Keryakoplis and midfielder Remi Allen.

19-year-old Hannah played for Liverpool for three consecutive FA Women's SuperLeague seasons and finished as the Reds' top scorer in 2012. After finding playingopportunities limited, she moved to Stoke City, of the FA Women's Premier LeagueNorthern Division, in August 2013. Having represented Wales at Under-17 and Under-19 level, the Penyffordd-bornstriker made her senior debut aged just 17 in 2011 and currently has 20 caps and threegoals to her name. Keryakoplis is also the current Young Player of the Year for Wales andled their forward line during the recent UEFA Under-19 Championship Finals in her homecountry. Remi has represented England from Under-15 levelthrough to Under-23s with the highlight of that internationalexperience being the Three Lions' lifting the 2009 UEFA Under-19Championship; a team that also included new Blues team matesRebecca Spencer, Jade Moore, Izzy Christiansen, ChelseaWeston and Kerys Harrop. Blues Ladies boss David Parker said of his new captures:"Hannah is a player I have admired for some time now. Whenwatching her play for Liverpool and Wales in the 2012 season shestood out for me as a player to watch in the coming years. "She's a young tenacious player who has all the attributesto be a modern centre forward and is another player who fits inwell with our philosophy at the football club. "She will add a different dimension to our strike force nextyear and it's a great pleasure to see such an enthusiastic playerthat has chosen to join us for all the right reasonsand to progress her footballing development. I'm delighted we have been able to secure adeal for Remi in what is a great coup for the club. "Remi is a combative central midfielder whohas been a shining light in Lincoln's side for the pastthree seasons and will add another dimension to theside next season. "Often overlooked is her technical andgoalscoring ability which gets less plaudits becauseof her aggressive style of play. What is also keywhen recruiting any player is their character and howthey will fit into the group and with Remi it’s a perfectfit for this football club both on and off the pitch."

Northern DivisionJamillah Palmer marked her Stoke City debut by scoring twice as theycame from behind to beat Newcastle Utd 4-2 and move up into secondplace in the Northern Division. Lizzy Fraser lobbed Newcastle in front with Natasha Lillyequalising, but an own goal by Anne-Marie Atherton put United back inthe lead again. Laura Garside levelled matters once again before Palmer, recentlysigned from Wolverhampton Wanderers, secured victory for Stoke with two second halfgoals which sees them cut the gap on leaders Sheffield FC to four points.

Sporting Club Albion meanwhile leapt into the top half of the table on the backof a 4-1 win away to Leeds Utd. Jamie-Leigh Fowler opened the scoring for Albion afterseven minutes but Leeds battled hard to get back on level terms via a powerful strikefrom Abbie Lee. After the break, Robyn James put Albion in control by netting twice andthe prolific striker completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot. These were the only two matches throughout the Premier League to survive theweather over the weekend, all of the others having been postponed. There had been better news for Leeds in the week before Christmas as theypicked up an important 3-0 local derby victory over Bradford City, which had takenthem out of the bottom two. Carey Huegett scored twice inside the opening half hour, totake her league tally for the season to nine, with an own goal sewing up the points duringthe second half.Southern DivisionOnly one match has been played in the division during the past three weeks but itproduced a hugely significant result at the foot of the table. The two bottom placed teams, Keynsham Town and Chesham Utd, met eachother in an important clash and it was Keynsham who leapfrogged the Clarets with a 5-2win. Gemma Fraser latched onto a bad back pass to give Chesham a second minutelead and after Katarzyna Rusek equalised for the home side, Fraser restored Chesham'sadvantage but Leanne Lapham levelled the scores once again on the stroke of half time. After the break, Rusek and Lapham each netted their second goals to put the match intoKeynsham's hands and they wrapped up the win through substitute Hari Sabic late on.

"It will be different at first but I am sure I will adjust. I still know the majority ofthe team so hopefully I know how they play so I can fit in quickly.

Having been part of the Charlton team thatwon the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division title in 2010-11, she made themove to America. Grace was an ever present in her final two years with the UMass Minutewomen,co-captaining the side for her senior year in 2013. She racked up three goals and sevenassists in 58 appearances in her three years, as she combined playing football withstudying. On her time stateside, she added: "I learnt a lot, it was hard but I think it was wellworth doing and I would recommend it to people in the future, definitely. "I think it improved everything, even me as a person. It taught me a lot and mademe know I could do things I didn't think I could do. It's a different way of life over there. "In pre-season for about two weeks we would train twice a day and then it goesdown to once a day and then during the year we would have Monday off, train Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday, game Friday and train Saturday and Sunday."

Southampton Saints 1 University of Portsmouth 2University of Portsmouth Community WFC recorded a vitalaway win in their South West Combination match againstSouthampton Saints to narrow the gap at the bottom of thetable. The fixture survived the deluge by virtue of being playedon the 4G pitch at Test Park and Uni gained a deserved threepoints with a committed and composed performance, despitehaving only ten players for final twenty minutes after an injuryto the scorer of the winning goal, Gemma Green. Pompey looked comfortable right from the start, movingthe ball confidently and finding Green and Michelle Niven onthe wings to good effect. Hannah Haughton in the home goaldenied Niven on 18 minutes with a good save but Uni took thelead a minute later when Niven, played in on the left by anotherthrough pass, lobbed the keeper and the ball just beat BethWhitehorn's attempt to clear. Saints responded well and dominated the next twenty minutes. Rosie Dimery saved wellfrom Saints skipper Krystal Whyte then Roxy Lee Stewart made a dangerous run, ending withWhyte netting but from an offside position. A lofted Leah Shave free kick beat Dimery but waswell cleared off the line as Saints went very close to the equaliser. Niven nearly doubled the lead just before half time. Once again through on goal on the left, her lobbed shot grazed the angle of post and bar so the visitors took just a single goal advantageto the break. Whyte was inches away from equalising straight from the restart as a defensive slipallowed her to shoot inches wide from 20 yards. Whitehorn had a long range effort turned awayfor a corner with difficulty by Dimery but Saints were level on 59 minutes when a free kick washeaded against the bar by Kat Littleboy and Lucy Harper reacted quickest to nod home therebound. Parity lasted all of 30 seconds as Uni regained the lead almost from the restart. Green, picking up the ball 35 yards out, went past a defender before drilling a low shot into the bottomright corner for a fine solo effort. The scorer had to come off injured when in collision with keeperHaughton in going for a loose ball right in front of goal and Uni, with no substitutes available, wereforced to see out the match a player short. As conditions worsened with a gale force wind and rain sweeping across the pitch, thevisitors showed great composure in resisting Saints' increasingly desperate attempts to salvagea point. Substitute Georgina Axton made some telling runs down the left but no Saints head orfoot met the crosses. In truth, despite the pressure, Southampton never really created a clear cutopportunity and the work of Niven and Lacey Plumbley in holding up the ball from clearancesallowed their team to regain shape. After lengthy additional time, Uni were able to celebrate asweet victory over a hard working young Saints team. Another crucial match is scheduled for next week, when Saints host Newquay with bothteams locked on nine points whilst Uni, four points behind but with games in hand on the Cornishteam, will surely take great heart from a brave and skilful showing by all eleven players on theday.Southampton Saints: Hannah Haughton, Beth Whitehorn, Megan Richmond, Liberty Pritchard,Kat Littleboy, Lucy Harper, Bex Davis, Roxy-Lee Stewart, Krystal Whyte, Amber Siley, LeahShave. Subs: Sheriden Palk, Allana Falconer, Eilidh Currie, Catherine Browning, Georgina Axton.University of Portsmouth: Rosie Dimery, Rebecca Deacon, Bex Ingram, Lauren Paul, LouisaCambridge, Michelle Niven, Gemma Green, Sarah Stubbs, Naomi Green, Laura Newsome,Lacey Plumbley.

Scotland finished fourth in their first Brazil Women's InternationalTournament, after a narrow defeat to world number seven side,Canada, on the final day of action. Anna Signeul's side were looking to avenge a 2-0 defeat onmatch day one, but a late Sophie Schmidt header sealed victoryfor Canada in the third/fourth place play-off. Hosts Brazil lifted the trophy after defeating Chile 5-0 in thefinal. Neither Scotland or Canada had any clear-cut chances in an evenly matchedfirst half. Marie-Eve Nault raced towards the Scotland goal after seven minutes, butfired well over the bar. Canada captain Christine Sinclair, who picked up her 200th cap in the previousmatch between the two sides, then sent Jessie Fleming running with a great ball frommidfield, but Gemma Fay easily held her shot. Kim Little, who was back in the centre of midfield after partnering Jane Ross upfront in the previous tournament matches, picked out Jennifer Beattie with a free kickfrom the right wing, but Canada goalkeeper Erin McLeod got a hand to the ball beforethe defender could connect. In the final minute of the half, a mix-up between McLeod and KadeishaBuchanan led to a Scotland corner, but Little's inswinging effort was knocked over thebar. Both sides looked more dangerous in front of goal in the second half. Jane Rosshad an opportunity to grab a spectacular opener, but her powerful curling effort fromdistance rattled the bar with McLeod beaten. Fay then pulled off a great save to deny Adriana Leon. Cardiff Met Ladies strengthened their position asShared Access Welsh Premier Women's Leagueleaders on Sunday with a 7-0 victory against reigningChampions Cardiff City FC. Cardiff Met captain Hannah Billingham spoke toWomen's Soccer Scene about the game and herside's efforts to go one better than last season whenthey just missed out on the title on goal difference:This was a fantastic result for Cardiff Met Ladies,is that the best the team has played this season? To be honest, we've played better - it wasn't our bestperformance coming back after the Christmas break but we did do well. We're proudof the result and the way we played. The game was played in terrible conditions with a strong wind and driving rainat times, it must have been tough?Yes, obviously it did make a difference and made it more difficult but I think thatdespite the conditions, we did well. The first goal came on the stroke of half time, it couldn't really have been bettertimed?I'm glad we got the goal right on half time as it gave us confidence when we went in- we came back out and were stronger than ever. When the penalty and sending off came it was important that you scored tomake it 2-0, as that probably dispirited City?I think it did, but to be fair to them (City), they did play right up until the end. We knewwe had to stay strong coming out in the second half and that's what we did.Laura May Walkley scored a hat-trick and her finishing was terrific, she had acommanding match in midfield?Yes she did and Ellie Curson as well they both played really wellLooking at the broader picture now, this was an important win as regards to thetitle race, is the team's confidence growing week by week with every game thatyou win?Our confidence has always been strong in training and in the games we play we'realways pretty proud of ourselves. Hopefully we can keep confident and keep winninggames! After going so close to winning the league last season, missing out on goaldifference, is there an extra determination this time around to get that titleback?Definitely! The heartbreak at the end of last season has made us more determined towin it this seasonYou have taken over the captaincy this season, what has it been like for you? It's great, I am really proud of the team. They are a good bunch of girls.Do you think that the result against Cardiff City will prove to the other teamsand challengers that you really mean business this season?I think they already knew it to be honest!

Kent experienced mixed emotions down at SussexFA's County Ground, as a brilliant team performancewas soured five minutes from time as an injury to KentFA’s Amy Taylor prompted the referee to abandon thematch.

Amy was treated on the pitch for several minutesfor a deep cut on her leg, after an innocuous challenge.Amy was then taken to hospital for further examination. At this moment the injury has been described as ‘not asserious as first feared’ and it has been predicted thatshe will be out for at least three weeks. The incident came 85 minutes into the game, and ended what was a closely fought contest and agreat performance from the away side.

Kent had the first half chance of the match asLisa Fulgence looked to race onto a through ball but thekeeper was quick off the line to collect. Sussex hadlooked to force an opening with a few deep crosses intothe box but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock19 minutes in. Charlotte Long picked up the ball inspace and tried her luck from 25 yards and thedeflection of the Sussex defender left the keeperstranded as the ball trickled into the near corner.

While the goal had more than a touch of fortuneto it, the visitors were good value for the lead, showinggreat composure on the ball all over the pitch whilealways posing a threat.

The second half started cautiously, with Kentcontent to keep possession and try and frustrate thehosts and wait for their opportunity, although they gotaway with another short pack pass, this time the effortflashing past goal.

The next goal was always going to be crucial forwhichever side got it and ten minutes from time Kentdoubled their advantage through their captain, whoagain put in an inspired performance. Jay Blackie wonthe ball in the centre circle and started a swift passingmove which finished with her curling a delightful effortinto the bottom corner from the edge of the box to leavethe keeper with no chance.

A minute later the win was sealed as LouiseMcCandless, off the bench, scored her first goal for hercounty with a brilliant effort which went in off the insideof the post to give the hosts goalkeeper no chanceagain.

The Southern Counties Competition have yet todecide if the result will stand, but if it does it willincrease Kent’s unbeaten league run to five matchesand more importantly will send them to top of theleague with two home matches left to play against theArmy and the RAF.(Source: www.kentfa.com)

“We are a team who enjoy playing against teams from higher leagues and welike to test ourselves. We have a few experienced players who have played in theCombination league and also players who are playing at their highest level now but weknow can play at a higher level so we tell them to go out there and show us what theyhave got.

“I remember playing against Bradford when we were both in the Combinationleague so I know it will be a challenge.

Rovers captain Nikki Berko added: “We are really looking forward to testingourselves against higher league opposition and know it will be extremely tough againsta good side, but we can take confidence from beating Blackburn Rovers in theLancashire Cup Final last year and that proves that anything can happen in the cup!”

On Christmas Eve, the Nottingham Women's Centre on Chaucer Street held their second annual SoupKitchen event and Nottingham Forest Ladies were humbled to be part of the event. In addition Club representatives from the club were on hand to help outon the day itself. Centre Manager Melanie Jeffs had the following to say about the day: "After a tough year formany people, it was great to finish 2013 with an event like this. In the course of five hours we fed wellover 100 women and approximately 60 children. We provided clothes and toys to women, as well asfood parcels and information on crisis support available over the Christmas period. We simply couldn'thave done this without the generous donations and hands-on support provided by the community, including Nottingham Forest Ladies FC. "We were completely stunned a few days before the event when Forest Ladies turned up with avan full of donations. After a few quick peeks into the bags we realised that this was going to makeChristmas special for a lot of women and children, whom otherwise might not have much to look forwardto. "We really hope to have the opportunity to work with Forest Ladies again in the future." Forest Ladies Director of Football, Lisa Dawkins was instrumental in supporting the event bothbefore the event and on the day - and acknowledges the Centre's cause: "The Centre has manyinitiatives to support women in the Nottingham Community but this annual event affords a chance toshare the true spirit of the Christmas season and to help those in greater need at a time which bringsabout financial pressures alongside. It was so good to see such a positive effect from the Forest Ladiescommunity having benefit and we hope to maintain the support going forward." Club Operations Manager Steven Gray added: "When Forest Ladies heard about the event weinstantly decided that we wanted to help out as much as possible, as a club we collected up as muchas we could for this great cause. Theyhave been rewarded with a trip over the Severn Bridge to play Cardiff City Ladies of the Premier League. Cardiff City were founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn Ladies Football Club after a local charitymatch. After a few years in the South West League and a lot of success gained in five-a-sidecompetitions, in 1981 the club decided to change its name to Cardiff. Later that season they won the AllEngland five a side trophy, becoming the first club to take the trophy outside of England, a record stillheld today. In 1984 the club were the South West League champions and have over the years won manydomestic cup competitions. In 1993, Cardiff Ladies linked up with the League of Wales club Inter Cardiff and that sameseason was the start of an enjoyable association with Cardiff Athletic Stadium which still to this day isthe clubs home ground having moved across the road to the brand new recently built stadium. At the beginning of 1997-98, the club severed all connections with Inter Cardiff and changedtheir name to Cardiff County, forming links with Cardiff County Council, until 1999 when they changedtheir name once more to Cardiff City, but remained an independent outfit. The same season they werepromoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history, but unfortunately could only sustaintheir position for two seasons and were relegated in 2001. Success in the Combination league came inthe League Cup before they were promoted once again in the 2003-04 season, this time with a 100%winning record – the first in the league's history, regaining their status in the Premier League SouthernDivision.

For the first time in its history Cardiff were promoted to the FA Premier National League in2005-06 season. Unfortunately the club was relegated back to the Southern Division after enjoying twoseasons playing amongst the top 12 teams in the country, but two years later they returned after adramatic end to the season and an unbeaten run of games that got them into second spot in the leagueand promotion back to the National Division. Jamie Sherwood took over as manager from long serving Michele Adams, briefly assistedby Jessica Fishlock, and he helped guide the team to eighth place. This year they are in the hunt for theSouthern Division title and have a strong squad captained by Kayleigh Green. Several of the squad areWelsh internationals including Nicola Cousins and Lauren Townsend plus Michelle Green, who is hercountry's most capped women's international. Several of the players have come up from their vibrant junior sections, Nicola Cousins hasbeen with the club since she was 11 years old whilst Zoe Atkins and Kayleigh Green have been presentsince they were 14. Special mention must go though to club secretary Karen Jones MBE, who has been with theclub since its formation and has been a huge servant both to her club and the women's game. Cardiff City Ladies will start as strong favourites for the tie but St Nicholas will approach thegame in confident mood and should not be underestimated.Cardiff City Ladies (from): Sophie Dando, Lauren Townsend, Nicola Cousins, Kelly Aldridge, LouiseHutton, Kayleigh Green, Kelly Isaac, Michelle Green, Paige Stewart, Naomi Clipston, Beth Lloyd, CoriWilliams, Hannah Daley, Zoe Atkins.St Nicholas (from): Elise Soper, Jade Gamlin, Gemma Rallison, Serena Smith, Natalie Coles, MelMcIlwraith, Rianne Lewis, Jennifer Jones, Abi Winnett, Charlotte Davis, Amy Jefferies, Alice Blunsdon,Becky Rexworthy, Jess Wilson, Jo Gay, Ruby Bagge, Ava Byrne, Amy Ford, Adele Hooper.

Aberystwyth Town’s Lowri Walker is tackled byLyndsey Davies of PILCS (www.atfc.org.uk).

Cardiff Met Ladies have gone eight points clear at thetop of the Shared Access Welsh Premier Women'sLeague after beating second placed Cardiff City FC7-0. City did have a couple of chances to take thelead during the first half but it was Cardiff Met who tookthe lead on the stroke of half time through Ellie Curson. After the break, a sending off and injury made it tough for City, who were forced to finish the gamewith nine players, and the students capitalised ruthlessly despite their opponents not giving up inthe torrential rain and strong wind. After Ellie Sargent had doubled their lead, Laura Walkleyadded two superb strikes and Chloe Tucker headed in the fifth from a corner. Abby Pictonproduced a neat finish before Walkley completed her hat-trick late on via a solo effort.

PILCS are back up to third but kept in touch with the leading sides by running out 4-0winners away to Aberystwyth Town. Katrina French ensured that the 'Green Army' were aheadat the break and Ceri Hudson added a second early in the second half, before Lindsey Daviesnetted twice to round off the scoring.

Port Talbot Town meanwhile returned from Northop Hall with a 3-0 victory under theirbelts, condemning the home side to their tenth straight defeat. Laura Amor opened the scoringfor Port Talbot and Jessica Curran extended their lead on the half hour, with Rachel Ball wrappingup the points with fifteen minutes remaining.

Wrexham continue to improve and will have their sights set on the top half of the tablefollowing their 4-2 success away to Caernarfon Town. Ashley Hayes scored the only goal of thefirst half for Wrexham and Emma Rowden netted the second, before a flurry of goals came in thelast ten minutes. Katie Williams reduced the arrears for the home side with Hayes replying fiveminutes later, Sioned Jones again gaveCaernarfon late hope but Hayes steadied anyWrexham nerves by completing her hat-trick ininjury time. The weather did play its part though andhad the final say regarding the other two matches.Swansea City's match with Llanidloes wasabandoned at half time due to the conditions withthe scoreline goalless and the game betweenNewcastle Emlyn and Llandudno Junction fellvictim to a waterlogged pitch.

Patrick Higgins - surely women’s football’s ‘Superfan’ - gives his take on the year just finished:Any period of twelve months in any mass participation activity will include change but looking back at2013 in women's football, it feels closer to being a defining year, at least in this country. The regimechange in leadership of the national teams, the selection of ten clubs to expand the Women's SuperLeague and the rolling out of the changes described in the FA's 'Game Changer' document have giventhe year a 'beginning of an era' feel. The landscape of the sport has changed forever and, as always, there have been winners and losers as the evolutionary process gathers pace. A major catalyst for change was the dismal showing of the England senior team at the UEFAEuropean Championships in Sweden in July. The dismissal of Head Coach Hope Powell wasannounced just as the England Under-19 team was starting a highly creditable campaign in their ownversion of the competition held in Wales and leading to a runners-up spot, revealing that the mid to longterm supply of senior international candidates is healthy. The Under-17s failed to qualify for their WorldCup, losing out on penalties but gaining valuable experience in a home based UEFA EuropeanChampionship. Brent Hills was rewarded for a flawless interim managership with the post of Head of EliteWomen's Performance in December but the big prize went to Mark Sampson whose immediate task isto ensure qualification for the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada. Sampson had overseen one of thesuccess stories of 2013 as manager of Bristol Academy WFC, whose second place finish in the FA WSLand FA Women's Cup Final appearance bore witness to an ability to get a group of players performingto their maximum. Liverpool defeated Bristol Academy in a title deciding showdown on the final day of the WSLseason but arguably the decisive moment was Gemma Bonner's 89th minute thunderbolt which settledtheir first meeting on August 10th. That 4-3 away win gave Liverpool the margin of comfort and meantthat Academy needed a win on the final day. There is little doubt that Liverpool deserved the title for theirexcellent recruitment and the skill of manager Matt Beard in finding a settled team shape which broughtout the best in so many players. The Liverpool triumph came after nine years of domestic league domination by Arsenal. Undernew manager Shelley Kerr, the Gunners lifted both domestic cups but were consigned to third place inthe WSL due in part to a points deduction imposed for an administrative error. The subsequent exodusof players from the club might be seen as the end of an era. Certainly it would seem that Arsenal are nolonger the brand leaders in terms of investment and training schedules, or at least their ground breakingapproach to the sport has been taken a step further by rivals. The expansion of the WSL was always going to be a controversial process. In fact 33 clubs, including the eight founder members, applied for WSL 1 or 2 franchises with a maximum of 20 to bechosen. In the end, 18 were successful and 15 were not. Clearly, the successful applicants were thosewho were deemed best able to offer what the governing body wanted. Many neutrals felt dismayed atthe timing of the announcement of Doncaster Rovers Belles' placement in WSL 2 for 2014, one gameinto their 2013 WSL1 campaign. The next expansion date is currently set at 2018 so those wishing to join the elite have plenty oftime to prepare their proposals. Of course 98% of adult women footballers operate in around 1,000 clubs outside the newlyconstituted elite structure. WSL bound Sunderland and Aston Villa took the honours in the Women'sPremier League National Division and League Cup respectively. Reading FC Women and Sheffield FCwon the WPL Southern and Northern Divisions and Oxford United, Stoke City, Chesham United andSouth Durham & Cestria won their Combination leagues. One notable and regrettable casualty during2013 was Colchester United who were unable to complete their season after an exemplary record ofdeveloping and promoting local talent over recent years. Recent announcements from the FA have clarified their vision of the new landscape. The majorchange is the removal of the FA Women's Premier League from 2014 in favour of a Championship whichcombines the current WPL with the Combination leagues. All available information seems to indicate aconsiderable reduction in FA funding for the WPL clubs going forward. The change in league name isto ensure that there is a 'clear tier structure within the women's football pyramid', the Championshipbeing deemed the 'third and fourth tier' of the women's game, according to the FA statement. Particularly unfortunate amongst many victims in this process is one club which has gone frombeing members of the highest league in 2010-11 to being designated 'third tier' in 2014 without havingsuffered relegation on the field! On a personal note, I completed ten years as a fan of the game and saw 96 matches in 2013. Mymatch of the year was Denham United 5 Norwich City 4 in the South East Combination on the openingday of the 'traditional' season on August 18th. A brilliant rollercoaster of a match on Denham's return toCombination level football, reflecting all that is best in the women's game. I hope the future will be bright for all levels of the game with the FA commitment to a 'thrivingwinter pyramid' being properly honoured and their ambitious plans for elite development bearing fruit forEnglish talent.

The London FA have received some funding from the FA small sided fund to run some smallsided football for women across London and so far have run three five-a-side leagues. This 7-a-sideleague is another step in creating different playing opportunities for women and it is hoped that it willattract those who have played five-a-side and want to try something a bit different along with thosewho play on both a recreational basis and in 11-a-side teams.  Emma Barnes, W&G FDO for London FA, says: "This is something a bit different to the usualfive-a-side leagues so we hope that it will be attractive to current teams and any new teams who wantto get involved. It is a great way to socialise and keep fit at the same time as well as being in afantastic central location. With the recent bad weather it is also a great way to guarantee regularfootball as it will be taking place on a 3G pitch."  The league will run on Friday evenings for 10 weeks from 7th February through until 11th Aprilfrom 7pm- 9pm. The cost to enter a team is just £350 for the 10 week league, which works out at just£35 per week. The league will be affiliated and officiated by LFA referees. At the end of the leaguethere will be prizes for the winning team and the runners-up.  Any ladies can enter the league as long as they are 16 or over. when they beat Dearne & District in apenalty shootout after their quarter final tieended 2-2. The two meetings in the leaguethis season had seen Dearne win 5-3 athome a few weeks after the teams drew 0-0at Edlington. Charlie Holmes put Dearneahead after 25 minutes, but Edlington thenpressed strongly and deservedly levelledthrough Emma Spencer shortly before theinterval. Holmes had a good chance torestore the advantage before ShelleyOffless met a low centre to fire Edlington2-1 ahead on 55 minutes. If Chelsea Bakerhad shown steadier finishing when one onone with former Royals goalkeeper AmyHolliman, Edlington would have put the tiebeyond Dearne’s reach, but Trudi Racescored five minutes from time to force extratime which then failed to produce a winner. With the scores still level after the initial setof five kicks per side, the first pair of suddendeath kicks were taken by the keepers, bothof whom scored. Dearne then missed theirseventh kick and Kate Spencer’sconversion ensured Edlington progressed.Sheffield Wednesday Development are
