The Lord’s Mighty ShipThe sea is wild, the journey; foreboding,
a lifetime out at sea.I meet the great ship in quiet harbor and step aboard. His strength and beauty give me great solace.
Out into open waters we sail; this mighty craft with me.Solid and balanced, this steady hull glides across a temperamental ocean staying true to the course
through rolling, tumbling storms.Neither wave nor wind can harm me.
Safe inside, I look to the stars;my days spent watching the sun rise and set.
Agile sails respond to an angry gale blowing across the bowprotecting me in tender repose.
My course is guided day and night with great precision.I am at peace. There is no anxiety.
Monsters rising from the deep kept at bay by His mighty hull. All that might hurt me, cannot.
This gentle ship rocks me softly to sleepuntil He brings me to journey’s end; an unknown shore on the other side.
Dear Parishioners,
“But God proves his love for us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” This passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans that is proclaimed this weekend, sort of summarizes the Lenten journey. As we prepare for Easter, we realize the power of God’s love for us despite our struggles with sin and evil.
Fr. Phil Ressler wrote a wonder-ful book entitled, 40 things to Give up for Lent and Beyond: A 40 Day Devotion Series for the Season of Lent. During our Lenten journey, he challenges us to look beyond giving up chocolate (not that this is not a challenging goal!), and try and give up things like; self-pity, impatience, bitterness, gossip and negativity, pride, envy, the need to please and feelings of unworthiness. These are just a few things we can give up that can have profound impact on the quality of our lives and our faith.
There are many gatherings that are helping to keep us centered on the power of Lenten renewal. The scripture study groups continue to explore powerful themes from the Book of Psalms. I am so moved by the exercise to write a psalm. We have awesome psalmists in our par-ish. I call your attention to a beauti-ful psalm written by Jean Simmons that is in this week’s bulletin entitled, “The Lord’s Mighty Ship”. Thank you, Jean.
Several parishioners have been participating in Hearts Afi re, a
small group program that has been organized by Jen Farber and Vivi Lato. The program, a 33-day retreat featuring daily readings and weekly presentations and discussions, culminates next weekend with a Marian Consecration. What a way to celebrate the Feast of the An-nunciation. In recent weeks, Fr. Rich Jakubik and Fr. Mike Sparough have been part of the presentations. Many graces will be received as a result of this experience.
This coming Tuesday we will be hav-ing a Communal Penance Service at St. Norbert at 7:00 p.m. Priests from OLPH, St. Norbert and St. Catherine Laboure will be available for the cele-bration of the sacrament of reconcili-ation. Please come!
It is wonderful to welcome Bishop Kane to our parish as he presides at two celebrations of Confi rmation for our Religious Education candidates. Congratulations to all those who will be confi rmed.
Cardinal Cupich will be celebrating a Mass for all the teenagers of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Norbert,
Our Lady of the Brook and St. Cath-erine Laboure on April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Norbert Parish, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook. All teens and their families are invited.
Our Creation Care Ministry is fi nal-izing proposals to help make our par-ish more recyclable friendly. They are suggesting several ways we can be more deliberate in recycling here at the parish. We have so many events, and with a little additional planning, we can make a big difference in protecting the environment. The Holy Father’s Encyclical, “Ladato Si”, has been such an inspiration.
Bob and Sue Castagna will soon be moving to Homewood-Flossmoor to be closer to their grandchildren. I am so grateful for their leadership on so-cial issues. Bob has been instrumen-tal in communicating developments in social doctrine on The City and our efforts to build relationships with Sts. Peter and Paul on environmental issues. God bless you both as you embark on this move.
May your Lenten journey be blessed!

Transformation: Living Christ’s Mission TodayWhat is Communio?During the weeks that the Transformation Team met, one of the topics that kept making its way into our discussions was that of “Welcom-ing;” moreover, whether Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a welcoming parish. Do strangers who walk through our doors see friendly, smiling faces―parishioners who embody the presence of God? Many people expressed concern that we fall short in this regard and that our parish would benefi t from working on Communio.
Communio is a Latin word used by the Church to describe the union that we, as Catholics, share with and in Christ as members of His Mystical Body. We cannot, however, profess to be one body in Christ without acting as one body. Therefore, although Communio is a gift from God, we must work to perfect this unity, which requires our being conscious of each other as well as the strangers in our midst. Do we create an atmosphere that is inclusive? Do we value each individual? Do we smile and extend our arms in greeting? In his Encyclical, Novo Millennio Inuente, St. John Paul II writes of a “light we must also be able to see shining on the face of the brothers and sisters around us.” Does the stranger see this light in our faces? We often downplay its power, but nothing lights up a face better
than a smile. St. Teresa of Calcutta expresses it beautifully when she contends, “We may never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”
With the act of breaking bread in Communio, we hearken back to the fi rst Christian communities described in the Acts of the Apostles. When we greet one another before Mass or offer one another the sign of Peace, we acknowl-edge this unique relationship—this Communio that wraps us as one in the arms of Jesus. It is comforting to realize that wherever we travel in the world, Communio makes it possible to share the Liturgy and the Eucharist without sharing the same language.
Pope Francis, in On Care For Our Common Home, con-tends that “Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrim-age, woven together by the love that God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth.” How beautiful to contemplate the gift of Communio that brings us together in worship and service and love!

News from Sharing
Shamrocks and Leprechauns“Tell me something about St. Patrick” I said to a reveler going downtown to Chicago for some more alcohol and fun on March 17th. Absolute blank! As Patrick is my patron saint, as well as the patron of the country of my birth, I feel compelled to provide infor-mation about my patron saint and his life.
As a young boy, Patrick was taken as a slave from his Roman family in Wales by Irish marauders. He worked as a slave for several years, looking after sheep on the moun-tains. Years later he wrote a small book, which we call the Confessions of St. Patrick. In this book he says he prayed constantly when on the mountain. So, one thing we must know is that he was a real mystic.
Second, when he escaped and was home in Wales, he had a vision of people he knew in Ireland begging him to come back to them and bring his faith to them. He answered this vision and returned to Ireland as a bishop in 432 AD. God gives us all visions of who we can be. I pray for the courage to leave the security of our own lives to follow the path we see in our visions.
Third, he was the fi rst person to preach Christianity outside the Roman Empire. Ireland was the very end of the earth for the Romans. He ended the practice of slavery in Ireland, and condemned it as evil. He was the fi rst in history to do this, and no one paid attention until the abolitionists in the 17th century. He was particularly sensitive to the suffering of female slaves. Thomas Cahill in his book, How the Irish Saved Civilization says: “The Lord gives grace to his many handmaids; and though they are forbidden to do so, they follow him with backbone.” Patrick has become an Irishman, a man who can give far more credibility to a woman’s strength and fortitude than could any classically educated man.
When I was a young boy, St. Patrick’s Day was a Holy Day in Ireland. I pray that we will all come back to the love of Christ that Patrick brought to the people of Ireland. A form of greeting in Gaelic is: “Dia is Muire Dhuit.” (God and Mary be with you.) to which the reply is: “Dia is Muire Dhuit is Padraig.” (God and Mary be with you and Patrick.) And that is my prayer for all of you on this holy day. Fr. Paddy Tyrrell

Evolve Adult Education PresentsTheologian Jack Shea: The Woman at the Well Meets the man Born Blind and LazarusSaturday, March 25, 9:30 a.m. in McDonnell HallDuring this Lenten season, we will read three long stories from the Gospel of John; The Woman at the Well, The Man Born Blind, and The Raising of Lazarus, on March 19, 26 and April 2, respectively. These are inspired masterpieces of spiritual illumination and instruction. In our interactive session, we will work with these stories so they bring us both consolation and challenge.
Join Us for Prayer TastingAll of us have a “hunger” for prayer and for a deeper relationship with God. But for a myriad of reasons a consistent, regular prayer life seems elusive for many of us. Join Fr. Tom Hickey in the Lady Chapel in church on Wednesday, March 22 and 29, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Fr. Hickey will talk about how to develop a stronger spiritual life as well as discuss some of the common pitfalls we experience in prayer. Each session will also give participants time to sample and refl ect together on a particular form of prayer from the rich storehouse of our Catholic tradition. Materials will be distributed at each session further explaining each form of prayer. Come and bring a friend!
• March 22: Ignatian Prayer - Employing our imaginations, this prayer method aids us in entering into scenes from the gospel to lead us to deeper conversation with the Lord.
• March 29: Centering Prayer - Made famous by fi gures like Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating, centering prayer is an apt form of prayer for those who need to get out of their heads.
On Holy Thursday, after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, there is a very beautiful and ancient tradition of visiting seven churches. Each church will have an Altar of Repose of the Blessed Sacrament, so while the rest of the world goes to sleep, Catholic pilgrims will be traveling late into the night, keeping Jesus company on the eve of his Crucifi xion. At OLPH, the Blessed Sacrament will be taken on a procession through the Church and be reposed in a beautifully adorned Tabernacle. This is a time for intense prayer and devotion in the presence of the Most Holy Sacrament as we enter into the holiest days. Visiting the altar of Repose in seven churches stems from pilgrims visiting the seven churches of Rome as a form of penance. The seven churches include St Peter’s, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, St. John in the Lateran, St. Laurence Outside the Walls, Holy Cross in Jerusalem and the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love.
Join us Holy Thursday (April 13) for the visitation of seven churches around Chicago. We are planning on leaving, by bus, soon after the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at OLPH, which is at 7 p.m. We will visit seven churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, includ-ing our beautiful Basilicas, in which we will pray with Jesus and contemplate the mysteries of our faith. We will conclude our journey back at OLPH around mid-night. Upon returning to OLPH, for those able to join us, we will share a meal together at Omega restaurant before fasting on Good Friday. Bring money for dinner if you are planning on joining us. The bus fee is $20. Please make checks payable to OLPH Parish. Sign-up sheets will be placed at the church entrances. You can also reserve a seat by emailing Fr. Isaac at [email protected] or Sara DiCesare at [email protected]. We especially encourage young people to come for this beautiful and fun experience of our faith. Please sign up by Monday, April 9 so we can plan accordingly.
Teen & Young Adult Focus• Celebrate Mass with Cardinal Cupich on April 2 at
5:30 p.m. at St. Norbert Parish, 1809 Walters Ave., Northbrook. This special invitation is extended to all the teenagers of OLPH, St. Norbert, Our Lady of the Brook and St. Catherine Laboure. Note, there will not be a Teen Mass at OLPH Sunday, April 2.
• Consider the Seven Churches Visitation (men-tioned above). Don't miss this beautiful and fun ex-perience following the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
• For many years now, our Youth Group has been attend-ing the opera at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This is made possible through very generous gifts from the Men’s Club and individual donors. It is a unique oopportunity for young people, to attend the music of some of the greatest composers ever: Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet, Massenet, Bellini, etc. They also hear the greatest singers in the world today, including recent graduates of the Ryan School of Lyric Opera in Chicago. Most of our young peo-ple are steeped in the modern culture and its music. We aim to let them experience alternatives. Our hope is that they will continue to let their souls be enriched by contact with the greatest the world has ever seen and heard.

New Hearing Loop
Through a generous, designated gift from the family of Loretta Garvey, new hearing loop technology has been installed. This hearing loop makes it possible for hearing-impaired parishioners, their families and visitors, to easily adjust t-coil equipped hearing aids and listen directly to the sound system in either the Church or McDonnell Hall. We are especially grateful
that fundraising efforts through “To Teach Who Christ Is” made this technological enhancement possible. Please check with your hearing care professional to see if your hearing aid is equipped with a t-coil and properly adjusted. Visit www.Loopit8.com for more detailed information or call 855-566-7488 ext. 4, to talk to a customer service representative.

parish life and ministry
Ministry of PraiseThe Ministry of Praise is a spiritual ministry whose members offer their daily prayers, joys, sacrifi ces for the special intentions of the parish and the universal church. Members include all who pray on a daily basis: adults, teens, families, seniors, homebound and the sick of the parish. For over seven years, the Ministry of Praise has united our parish community through prayer because service is not only doing physical things but also about our spiritual endeavors. The men and women of the Min-istry of Praise share a part of their life each day for the good of our faith community.
Each month, Ministry of Praise members receive a letter from our Pastor or an Associate Pastor asking them to pray for special intentions of the parish and the universal church. Members also pray for their own personal intentions.
If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, or learning more, please fi ll out the below form and return it to the Parish Offi ce in the Rectory.
