TRANSCRIPT
Four differentchassis alternatives are provided in the
TM-Series. They are to be
regarded as four different ways to encapsulate the
active and passive units of the TM-Seriesthat are selected to
create a Network Element.

NE Platforms
The TM-series system platform contains a wide range of active and passive plug-in units optimized for cost-effective Layer-1 and Layer-2 transport. These plug-in units can be mounted in any of the three enclosures TM-3000, TM-301 and TM-101/-102. The selection of enclosure is based upon number of needed board slots and expected space for upgrades. It is fully possible to equip e.g. a TM-3000 chassis with any mix of DWDM, CWDM plug-in units in either single-fiber or fiber-pair configurations.
TM-3000 chassis is the high capacity enclosure with up to 17 full-sized and up to 10 half-sized slots. The TM-301 chassis is the medium capacity enclosure with up to 3 full-sized and up to 4 half-sized slots. Both can be configured to any NE-type or combination of NE-types. The generic backplane imposes no restrictions on NE-type or NE combination. Multiple fiber links can be connected to a TM-3000 NE to perform single or multiple TM- and/or ADM- functionalities. This flexible approach is totally different from traditional telecom systems with static NE-types, like Terminal Multiplexers (TM's) or Add-Drop Multiplexers (ADM's). The TM-101/-102 chassis is a 1U-sized chassis with one full-sized (for e.g. Transponders) and one half-sized slot (for passive MDU or AD-filter units). A passive TM-101 chassis is also provided having three half-sized slots for passive units.
TM-3000
TM-3000/-301/-101/-102 Chassis
The TM-3000 chassis has dual and redundant fan units as well as primary power modules. All connections are done from the front.
The card cage has 17 slots for plug-in units, e.g. Transponders, MuxPonders, MDU’s, Amplifiers etc. The far left slot is dedicated for a Control Unit. This card guide is coded via a yellow color. The following eleven slots (slot 2 - 12) can be equipped with any type of full-sized traffic units due to the generic back plane.
The last five slots (13 - 17) can either be used for full-sized or half-sized units. The half-sized units require a small shelf to support the smaller board sizes. This is a modular shelf and the number of half-height units is given by the length of the shelf. Each chassis is provided with a shelf-kit enabling the length to be changed from 1 slot up to 5 slots.
Full-sized units are normally active traffic devices (e.g. Transponders). Half-sized units are normally passive optical devices (e.g. add/drop filters). When a unit is inserted into a card slot, the slot position is detected by the unit and forwarded to the Control Unit (CU). The CU contains the node management SW (ENM) and provides an aggregated management view of all units within the TM-3000 chassis. The CU has a backup-copy of all Traffic unit configurations and upon a board replacement the previous configuration and correct SW-version can be downloaded to the new unit from the CU.Similarly, all Traffic units have a backup-copy of the CU configuration, i.e. NE configuration. Upon a CU failure the replacement board can be set into the previous configuration automatically.

The TM-301 card cage has one dedicated slot (slot 1) for a Control Unit (CU). The two following slots are for full- sized Traffic Units. Slots 4 to 7 are used for half- sized units.
A TM-301 can be used as an intermediate amplifier node or as a larger collector node for e.g. GbE and 10GbE traffic.
Active TM-101 equipped with a TP QMR Transponder and passive 4ch MDU unit.
TM-101/-102
Both TM-101 and TM/102 chassis have one full-sized slot for a Traffic unit (Transponder or MuxPonder) and consequently a Control Unit (CU) is not required to provide an aggregated management view as needed in e.g. a TM-3000 NE. Instead the unit processor on the Traffic unit contains the node manager (ENM) which is accessed the same way as for a NE with CU, i.e. via CLI commands or via an internet browser providing a graphical user interface (GUI). Remote login to other NE’s is done via embedded management channels that are provided by the Traffic units.
Both the TM-101 and TM/102 are perfect for small collector nodes in e.g. Triple-Play networks due to its compact size. The difference between the TM-101 and TM-102 are as follows:- TM-102 has only front access, i.e. DCN, primary power and traffic connections are done from the front. TM-101 has DCN and primary power inlets on the rear side. - TM-101 has redundant and extractable fan units that can be replaced in-service. TM-102 has redundant but fixed fan units.
o o- TM-102 can be used up to 50 C for some Traffic units. TM-101 is specified for up to 40 C.

The TM-3000, TM-301 and TM-101/-102 chassis are to be regarded as four ways to house the available plug-in units since all four can house any of the available Transponders, MuxPonders etc. This reduces cost for spare parts and ensures low operational costs since all nodes in a network can be optimized from size and capacity perspective.
All four chassis provide Carrier Class functionality, such as redundant fans and primary power, hot swap of all plug-in units, SW download via node manager or network manager, remote inventory functionality, alarm and fault management etc.
A passive TM-101 is also provided having three slots for passive units. The passive TM-101 can as an example be equipped with AD-filters and placed in an un-temperature stabilized environment close to the line fiber. The extracted wavelengths are connected via a fiber-pair to the active TM-101/-102 equipped with a Transponder. The active TM-101 /-102 chassis is placed in a controlled environment together with the client equipment.
