DescriptionThe Kentucky Statewide Trauma/Emergency Symposium provides an exciting opportunity for health care professionals seeking inno-vative approaches to trauma and emergency care. The program will cover clinical management of the trauma patient, including pre-hos-pital care, resuscitation, acute care and rehabilitation. Designed for the team approach, this multidisciplinary forum will feature national and local physicians, nurses, paramedics and other experts.

ObjectivesUpon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to:

Identify epidemiological factors related to trauma/emergency•Describe the pre-hospital, medical and nursing management of •specific emergency conditions/injuries or complicationsAnalyze selected contemporary issues affecting trauma/ •emergency care systemsExamine current research and trends of care for the •emergency/trauma patient

BackgroundTarget AudienceThis program is directed toward physicians, nurses, nurse practi-tioners, physician assistants, EMT/EMT-Ps, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists and other allied health care professionals caring for emergency and critical care patients.

Disclosure Faculty presenters of continuing education programs sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Medicine are expected to disclose any real or perceived conflict of interest. Copies of faculty disclosures are included in participant program materials or given prior to the lecture.

Continuing Medical Education

PhysiciansThe University of Kentucky College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AC-CME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Kentucky College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 12.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits

TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with

the extent of their participation in the activity. The University of Kentucky College of Medicine presents this activity for educational purposes only. Participants are expected to utilize their own exper-tise and judgment while engaged in the practice of medicine. The content of the presentations is provided solely by presenters who have been selected for presentations because of recognized expertise in their field.

NursesFor Nursing CEUs, Emergency Nurses Association has approved the following: Advanced Pediatric Life Support course: 8.0; Gen-eral Session Day One: 6.4; and General Session Day Two: 5.6. At-tendance on both days for General Sessions will result in approval of a total of 12 contact hours for the registrant.

Emergency Medical Technicians and ParamedicsEducation credit (equal to nursing CEU’s outlined for each course) will be provided by the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services and the Kentucky Emergency Medical Services for Chil-dren Project. Other Allied Health ProfessionalsAll other health care professionals for whom preapproval has not been achieved will be provided a certificate of attendance after the symposium. NoteCertificates for continuing education hours will not be distributed until the daily conclusion of the program with submission of an evaluation form. Partial continuing education hours are not an option.

Although this course is designed for physicians, other disciplines are encouraged to attend. The APLS Course focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis and initiation of treatment of many pediatric medical and surgical emergencies during the time the patient’s condition is being stabilized in the clinic or emergency department. Major topics to be addressed include Pediatric Assessment, Pediatric Airway, Central Nervous System, Medical Emergencies, Cardiovascular System, and Trauma. Advanced Airway and Advanced Trauma Procedures skill stations will be included. The course will require advance acquisition of the textbook APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource and independent study and completion of online “Check Your Knowledge” questions for six chapters. At the end of the 1-day course you will take a Course Completion Examination. Your course completion cards will be mailed to you at a later date. Cost: $100
