Exports growthwill also remain poor due to low external demand. RealGDP, however, is likely to gain momentum and grow on anaverage by 2.3% between 2014 and 2017 aided by an expectedimprovement in exports coupled with a moderate recovery inprivate consumption from modest improvements in labormarket conditions.

Ireland’s economy failed to recover in 2012 recording a 5%decline in spending by domestic tourists as a result of decreaseddisposable incomes from the high rate ofunemployment, increased charges and taxation, focusing onpersonal debt reduction and a poor labor market. With spendingcapabilities restricted, it is anticipated that Irish people willspend holidays at nearby destinations, cutting costs associatedwith air travel.

Since 2008, the highest demand for car rentals wasgenerally between July and September in Ireland. Due tooversupply, there was a decrease of 13.87% in the fleetsize in 2012. Since Ireland is a small country, car rentalcompanies were unable to redistribute vehicles to otherareas where demand was higher. During the reviewperiod, there were many efforts made by Irish car rentalcompanies to redistribute vehicles outside Ireland bynegotiating with the government, which remainedineffective until 2012. The profitability of thesecompanies was adversely impacted due to the majority offleets not operating during off season.
