Local PeopleThe locals speak Welsh and use the £ for

currency. They use bilingual signs to invite tourists in. The main street is called the Holyhead Road.

HistoryNeolithic people lived in Betws-y-Coed before

2,000 B.C.In 2,000 B.C., Spaniards (called Beaker Folk)

sailed into the Betws-y-Coed region without disturbing the Neolithic people.

Celts (called Britons) came into this part of Wales in 600 B.C., and brought iron work and improved agriculture.

Betws-y-Coed later became part of the Kingdom of Gwynned until the 12th century.

HistoryBefore the 19th century, Betws-y-Coed did not

have much tourism.There were mainly only coal mines.After the start of railroads, people flocked to

Betws-y-Coed for its beauty and small town feel. Artists like David Cox and JMW Turner, came to

BridgesPont-y-Pair Bridge was built

in 1468, and is located in theGwydyr Forest.

Another famous bridge in Betws-y-Coed is the Waterloo Bridge. It is part of the A5 that goes through the town. It has an inscription on it saying, “This arch was constructed in the same year the battle of Waterloo was fought." Waterloo Bridge
