My education has been the greatest opportunity afforded to me. I love to learn new things, master new skills and teach them to others. My education has taught me so much however, I have not stopped learning since I left school and continue to be surprised. I am an outdoor enthusiast; all my life I have loved hiking, camping, fishing. The escape into the wilderness brought me closer to those that I care about, and allowed me to appreciate the subtle qualities of the plants around me. I enjoy drawing as a form of communication and expression. I use drawing/drafting as a way to understand how things come together. I love to work with my hands, to build and watch things being construct-ed because it gives me a critical eye and a deeper appreciation for the world around me. As a landscape designer I am able to employ the things that I am truly passionate about and I love what I do.

Traveling both internation-ally and within the states, gives me a greater ap-preciation for the world around me and provides an opportunity to learn and experience the cul-ture of others.

I am highly goal oriented, once I commit myself to project I see it through to the end. I am never content with mediocre results and always strive for the best even if I means putting in more time/effort. I continually strive to improve myself and never stop learning.

I convey my thoughts succinctly and accurately through verbal dialogue and hand sketching. I utilize hand graphics to ex-change information, understand issues and reach a common understanding. I am proficient at both understanding and ar-ticulating ideas privately and publicly.

I am highly effective at work-ing individually and in a group atmosphere to achieve a com-mon goal. I enjoy interdisciplin-ary work and keep an open mind when discussing ideas so that I can better understand and over-come the challenges using a multifaceted approach to design.

I constantly strive for a deeper level of understanding in all things that I do which gives me a greater appreciation for my work. I am curious by nature and seek to comprehend how and why thing are. I am extremely detail oriented.

I have always maintained an active lifestyle and constantly strive to better myself. Physical activity helps to focus my mind and provides an outlet for my naturaly energetic per-sonality.

Film is unique modern art form that entertains and pushes the limits of imagi-nation while documenting history, culture, and fash-ion which offers a bridge to understand the past and present.

Bicycling promotes sus-tainable living and is a fun/healthy alternative option to commute. Bik-ing lets the rider experi-ence their soundings in a unique and immersive way.

I enjoy the subtle quali-ties plants offer and un-derstand how they can appeal to all five senses, as such plants gives me a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

    jackson park

    master plan

Jackson Park in Ronoake VA, is a large neighbor-hood park located across the street from Stone-wall Jackson Middle School. The concept behind this design was to incorporate the existing site el-ements including a historic home/driveway and an old growth stand of trees. In order to preserve these features I took a minimal intervention de-sign approach that integrates the new elements in the least disruptive locations to reduce grad-ing and save the trees. In addition the park ad-dressed the need of the school age population by providing recreation amenities including a soccer/baseball field and a youth center. Lastly all storm water runoff is captured and treated on site.

The owner of this beach front property want-ed two different designs, these two layouts: create a formal entry by maintaining sym-metry in the plantings to mimic the faade of the house. Form a buffer between the neighbors by increaseing the plant density close to the house. And create a simple/na-tive planting design to reduce the amount of maintenance.

For this master planning group exercise we created a new small scale residential development to serve as a community for graduate students and professors of Vir-ginia Tech. This design respects the rolling hill of this farm land by creating a ribbon, the main street, which undulates with the topography to experience the hills. In ad-dition this design preserves the existing topography by developing on flattest ar-eas of the site while leaving the crest of the hills open to save the views out to the mountains. Lastly storm water reclamation was an important aspect of the concept at all levels of design. The runoff water is collected and stored on site before it can make its way to the local stream network nearby.

This patio connected to the Community Cen-ter is the core of the Elder Spirit village. This space anchors the visual intersection of the Community Building and the Spirit House. Reserving this space solely for the residents is the most critical aspect of this design. Through orientating the design elements to encourage pedestrian circulation through this space creates a socially thriving environ-ment. While the intimate group spaces (Sen-sory Bluff and Garden Entrance) are located on the border of the confluence to provide different levels of interaction and activity. Lastly the extension of the Community Center is terminated by a natural enclave that offers the residents a more secluded resting area.

The clients of this small row home in DC wanted to maximize their back yard and create a contemporary enter-taining space using modern materials and patterns such as stainless steel a horizontal fence. The garage had been enlarged to house a car and created an awkward flare out that protruded in to the backyard and broke up the patio. A water feature was positioned in front of the bump out to conceal & incorporate it as a focal point.

    master plan

  • The concept for this design was to maintain the front yard lawn as primarily a play space for the clients children in this social neighborhood. In the rear yard the clients wanted maximize the entertaining space while conforming to the storm water regula-tions of Arlington County. In order to achieve this we worked closely with a civil engineer to balance the pervious/impervious surfaces and preserve the tree cover canopy.

The fundamental concept for this design was to establish a new pri-mary axis that was centered on a new set of French doors exiting the rear of the house. The clients want-ed to improve the connection be-tween their house and their yard by creating a larger usable patio space that was built at finished floor eleva-tion. The homeowners still wanted an informal entertaining patio be-low so we employed a permeable paving pattern with Mondo grasses to soften the amount of paved sur-face.

The clients of this suburban home in Arlington wanted to expand their entertaining patio in their rear yard while preserving the lawn area for their children. Because of the expanded the impervious surfaces on site we decided to col-lect the storm water and hold it on site by using the natural slope of the yard and a proposed dry swale to trap the runoff in the Southwest corner of the yard before it affected the rear neighbor.

For this small DC row home the clients wanted to im-prove the connection between their house and their yard as well as preserve a young Amer. Sycamore tree on site. We proposed to convert an existing bay window into a new set of French doors and construct a new stairs down to a dining patio. The Sycamore tree was incorporated into the shape and layout of the patio to protect the tree and provide shade. Due to the lack of privacy on the street corner we pro-posed a metal screen structure to conceal the patio from the road and selected appropriate evergreen screening plants to create a year round enclosure.

The primary goal for this Arlington county residence was to improve the overall street presence of this home to reflect the scale and traditional style of the property. By working with an architect the design achieved this by creating an enlarged front portico featuring large columns and a pendant light. In addition we reoriented the front walk to the center of the new portico and terminating at the driveway with pier mounted lights to highlight the improved entrance.

The concept behind this master plan was to merge a traditional style DC home with the contem-porary vision of the clients while addressing the drainage issues of the back yard. This was done by employing modern materials and simple patterns in conjunc-tion with traditional landscape el-ements such as an English kitch-en garden enclosed by a woven metal fence and plate metal arbor. In order to address the poor site drainage we create a low retain-ing wall to raise the grade a divert water towards a gravel terrace/lawn. Lastly the clients wanted to improve the connectivity between their house and the garden. We accomplished this by proposing a new set of French doors which oriented the landscape axis creat-ing a beautiful view shed from in-side the house.
