because they are one of the bestnatural health foods we have.At the USDA Human NutritionCentre, they have determinedthat when compared to 40 other fresh fruitsand vegetables, blueberries are number onein antioxidant activity. In other words, theyhelp neutralize harmful by-products of me-tabolism called free radicals, which can leadto cancer and many age-related diseases.

Anthocyanin, the pigment that createsthe blue colour in blueberries, is primarilyresponsible for the major health benefits.But there’s more: Researchers at RutgersUniversity have found a compound in blue-berries that promotes urinary tract healthand reduces the risk of infection. Europeanand Japanese scientists have documentedthe relationship between anthocyanin andimproved eyesight and the easing of eyefatigue. The American Chemical Society hasreleased information about a substance inblueberries, called pterostilbene, which hasthe potential to lower cholesterol. FurtherUSDA research has also found that variouscompounds in vacciniums are helpful in re-ducing obesity and heart disease.

There is a great deal of research now tak-ing place on the many health benefits ofblueberries, but if you eat about a cup a day,you just might be the beneficiary of all kindsof good stuff.

Blueberries are just now available instores and at fruit stands but in the homegarden, blueberries are one of the easiestplants to grow. In spite of all you’ve heardabout pollination, blueberries are techni-cally self-fertile. Production, however, is farbetter if two or more different varieties areplanted. To say blueberries love acidic soilis an understatement. It is also important tochoose a location that is rich in organic mat-ter, but be careful to avoid manures. Thereare genetic dwarf, low bush and high bushvarieties of blueberry plants, so they canfit into almost any garden area. Don’t hesi-tate to blend them in with other acid-lovingbroad-leaved plants like rhododendrons,Pieris japonica or Viburnum tinus. Treatyour blueberry plants more as ornamentalsrather than small fruits, and use them aspart of your landscaping. One plant by itselflooks out of place, but a grouping of three orfive, placed close together, blends nicely intoany planting.

For a real novelty, try a true dwarf varietycalled Top Hat. This compact strain seldomgrows over 18 inches high and is well suitedto bonsai pots. Granted, its flavour is notquite the same as some of the commercialvarieties, but its fruit still tastes good on ce-real or over ice cream. A more flavourful lowvariety is the cute little Brunswick that onlygrows six to eight inches high and two feetwide and is quite at home planted in a bed ofheathers or dwarf conifers.

Most blueberry varieties fall into early,mid or late season classifications. With ourideal growing area, I recommend plantingone of each type.
