Like a good spring house cleaning, athorough pruning can make yourgarden look clean and fresh at

this time of year. It can also improve thehealth of your trees as well as improvethe quality of fruits and flowering.

The problem for many folks, however,is knowing what to prune and how farback to prune it. Well, the art of pruningis 90% common sense and observationand 10% experience and knowledge, ac-quired by simply getting out and doing it.

Many good books on the subject areavailable but for simplicity, I suggest ThePruning Specialist by David Squire.

The first thing you need to know is thetype of pruning equipment to use. Handshears are the most useful garden toolyou can have. It really does not matter

whether you purchase the scissors type(sometimes called ‘bypass’ shears) orthe anvil type. My advice is to get a goodquality pair for which you can purchasereplacement blades. A lot of very inexpen-sive models are out there but in my expe-rience, they just do not stand up. Quality,medium to high-priced shears will pay forthemselves many times over. Remembertoo: shears are only meant for smallerbranches, usually 3/8 inch (6 mm) or lessin thickness. Unless it is very soft wood,once you get into thicker branches you re-ally should be using two-handed loppers.

Loppers, like shears, are available inthe bypass or anvil styles and in all priceranges. My comments on quality applyhere, too. Make sure the loppers youpurchase have replaceable blades, or aremade of drop forged, quality steel thatcan be sharpened. Today you can getextendable handles to reach up furtherinto trees, helping you to avoid ladders.Loppers can be used for branches up to1-1/2 inches (3.5 cm) in calliper.

For large branches, you need a goodpruning saw. You can purchase eitherstraight or curved blades, depending on

personal preference. Some types fold infor convenience, while others come withhandy sheaths that fit on your belt. Thekey to a quality pruning saw is good steeland well designed teeth with serrationsin opposite directions. This is especiallyimportant for cutting green, wet wood.

If you have massive evergreen plant-ings, you may choose to purchase a goodelectric or motorized trimmer. Electricones are only effective on standard cordsup to 100 feet long, so beyond that youshould be using motorized trimmers.With only a few evergreens, you will findtwo-handled grass clippers the best bet.As long as you stay in the softer growthfrom the previous season, these will dothe job nicely.

If you are the proud owner of tall treeswith even taller branches that eludeyou with a ladder, then you will findpole pruners the answer. After fightingbranches with 10 and 12 foot pruners,I have found the adjustable types fareasier to handle. They also come witha saw blade for getting at branches tooawkward or too large to cut.

I notice that folks who have a great

many older and larger trees are usingchain saws for pruning. For largerbranches it is a good deal easier andfaster but novices should get the feel ofusing these saws by practising on fallenbranches on the ground first. On lad-ders, make sure of your stability andwear goggles to protect your eyes.

Remember to keep all your shearsclean by dipping them in a solution ofone part bleach to 10 parts water. It isalso very important to make your cutswith the blade cutting upward to preventlarger branches from tearing the barkas they fall. Always make a cut on theunderside first, then move the blade over1/4 inch (4 mm.) on top to get a cleancut every time. The only other impor-tant thing to remember when cuttingbranches is to cut them on a shallowangle just above a bud. This will preventwater from seeping in, will prevent die-backs on the branch and will direct newgrowth in the direction of the bud.
